It's kind of sad how many people can't understand at all why Rengoku's father is like that. Rengoku did, and that's why his last words to him were only filled with love and concern for his well being. The last scene with him crying and only just saying his name explains so much you don't need an explanation.

I think it's more of a cultural difference thing
Here's a few things some might find interesting. The old family pictures, or what many people thought were family pictures of Tanjiro's family and Rengoku's family in the end credits of the Mugen Train Arc episodes, are most likely not actually family photos but are in fact pictures of their treasured memories and what they hold dear. You know this because in every one of the pictures both Rengoku and Tanjiro are not in any of them, only their families are shown. The pictures are also in color, which was not available during the Taisho period. The picture of Rengoku's pregnant mother and then the other one with what many people thought was a small Rengoku, this was actually his younger brother Senjuro. You realize this by looking at his kimono. It is the same kimono that a sleeping Senjuro was wearing in Rengoku's dream on the Mugen train when his mother spoke to him. Also, in the picture of his father, mother, and Senjuro, you can see his father holding his wrapped wooden training sword, but right there next to him you also see another sword as well. The sword is too big for it to be small Senjuro's, so you know it is most likely Rengoku's. This conveys that in Rengoku's heart, the time spent with his father and being trained by him must have been one of his most treasured memories. Although we still don't know the full story, there are other "hints" in the end credits and pictures to make you realize how devastated Rengoku's father probably was when he lost Ruka his wife. The picture of him and his wife both frozen in time looking at the same sunset probably signifies time has stood still for him. While in the next shot it shows Rengoku training Senjiro and also another shot of him watching over his father laying down. This signifies Rengoku taking the responsibility to be the strong one in his family since his father was so broken. All of this Rengoku understood and accepted and you know this because when all the demon slayers on the Mugen train under the demon dream spell dreamt of their ideal lives, only Rengoku's dream didn't change from reality. He accepted the circumstances and saw his father as someone that loved his family so dearly but became so broken after his wifes death. He also probably did not want to lose Rengoku as well so was against him becoming a Hashira. The onions on this episode sure hit hard😭

i think it was mention his father was somewhat like Kyouro in his youth, obv a bit less expressive, but he was still very nice. Only after his wife died he became like this

Without any manga spoilers they set up his father so well; to seem like a deadbeat, yet neither son shows hate. Rengoku obv grew up with a good set of morals and his mother so if he still has nothing but love for his father that alone speaks to him not being a total reject.
Imagine realizing the sheer power diff between you and demons, lose your wife, watch your kid throw himself to the very literal ( and figurative) demons you run from, and learn all those hashira you know are using knock off versions of the only technique that could make Muzen himself quake. Bro been through a lot.

cuz japanese is not always unambiguously, most things have several meanings or similar translations, it's a bit like boat, ship, yacht, ferry etc, like you know all these words are things that swim and transport stuff on water

She said " He had every opportunity to be like 'you were the worst father ever'". As in, saying Rengoku could have left that message like his father was seemingly expecting, but he left a caring message instead.

I think people hate Kyojuro's father without considering the reasons. I think as a hashira himself he understood that, that's not going to be good for his family and left the Corp. Maybe something happened to him( I don't know cuz I don't read manga). He never wanted his sons to be in the Corp. Kyojuro joined anyway and became a hashira himself. All of this made him angry and a pure asshole I guess.

Also,flame breathing have about 8 forms,1-5 and 9 forms were already showcased.the other 3 forms were the forms that kyojuro rengoku didn't know, because after his father stopped training him,Kyojuro learned flame breathing from a book,a flame breathing guide book.but the book only have 3 volumes.3 volumes that contains flame breathing's 1-5 forms,6-8 forms were not inside the book.9th form are only available to the rengoku family,no other family that learns flame breathing knows this form

Shinjuro (Rengoku's father) wasn't always like this. After his wife die, Shinjuro began drinking whilst doing duties as a Hashira and eventually encountered Hairo (Lower Two at that time) who he, in a drunken rage, proceeded to cut various parts of his body without ever cutting his head whilst lamenting on why his wife had to die yet Hairo, a demon, managed to survive and that he sees that all the things he's done as utterly pointless.

Honestly, I always knew that those two men are different persons even before the manga reached that point, they have completely different facial features. I am always baffled about how so many people think tanjiros father is the original sun breath user just because they have the same hair coiour and the earings. That said, I have to admit that I was a bit confused the first time I saw UM1, back then I really wasnt sure whether he is the sun breah user or not.
I can already see those stupid/moronic " tanjiros dad is alive?" reactions when they introduce UM1, smh.

Kyojuro's father is saying that they're talentless and weak, and that is to break their spirit of becoming a demon slayer or a member of the corps. Because kyojuro's father is a former hashira so he knows much more about demons than kyojuro. He know how powerful demons can be. So he's saying that kyojuro is weak and talentless so he can break his spirit and never join the demon slayer corps. It's because kyojuro's father just lost his wife and that's why he is drinking alcohol (sake). He doesn't want anymore of his loved ones to die anymore, and that's why he is saying that both of his son are weak and talentless.
