  • Episode # 6010 CONDITIONAL SURRENDER
    Original airdate: 11-20-60
After 15 years of a happy marriage Henry Underwood, played by John Newland, asks his wife Margaret, portrayed by Loretta Young, for a divorce because he wants to marry a beautiful, ambitious young woman named Gloria, played by Patricia Blair.
Margaret says little, but stops cooking, forgets to do laundry, leaves the gardening for her husband to finish! Henry is frustrated and gets the message, but he doesn’t actually come to his senses until Margaret tells him that their three boys will not be staying with her, but living with him and his new wife.
John Newland was an American director, actor, television producer, and screenwriter born in Cincinnati, Ohio, who began his career in vaudeville while still in his teens. After moving to New York City to study acting, he signed with Warner Bros. Studios but was relegated to playing bit parts
By the early 1950s, Newland began to focus solely on television roles, and by the late 1950's became best known as the host and director of the paranormal television series One Step Beyond. The series ended its run in 1961 and Newland later hosted its short-lived counterpart The Next Step Beyond in 1978. On January 10, 2000, Newland died of a stroke in Los Angeles.
Television and film actress Patricia Blair (Gloria) worked primarily on 1950s and 1960s television series. She is best known as Rebecca Boone in all six seasons of NBC's Daniel Boone, with co-stars Fess Parker, Darby Hinton, Veronica Cartwright, and Ed Ames. She also played Lou Mallory on the ABC western series The Rifleman, in which she appeared in 22 episodes with Chuck Connors, Johnny Crawford and Paul Fix.
Blair died on September 9, 2013 at her home in North Wildwood, New Jersey at age 80 from breast cancer.
David Willock, appearing as the counterman, appeared in 181 films and television series from 1939 to 1989. He began his professional career in vaudeville in 1931, teaming with his boyhood friend Jack Carson in a comedy song and dance routine.
He first appeared on screen in Good Girls Go to Paris (1939), in an uncredited bit part, but Willock is probably most familiar to modern audiences from his performance as Baby Jane Hudson's father in the opening scenes of the cult classic What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962). He played seven different characters on CBS's Green Acres with Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor, mostly portraying clerks or elevator operators.
He died of complications due to stroke at the actor's home in
Woodland Hills, California on November 12, 1990 at the age of 81. He is buried in Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery.
Trivia fact: For his contribution to the television industry, Dave Willock has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6358 Hollywood Boulevard.
Vince Barnett (Grimes) was born July 4, 1902, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Luke Barnett, a well-known comedian who specialized in insulting and pulling practical jokes on his audiences,
Vince apparently followed in his father's footsteps and for years was known as the 'professional ribber' -- appearing at banquets and parties as a paid 'insulter.'" He would insult the guests in a thick German accent, spill the soup and drop the trays-all to the great delight of hosts who enjoyed watching their friends squirm and mutter "Who hired that jerk?"
Barnett's initial involvement with Hollywood was as a screenwriter, writing screenplays for the two-reeler movies of the late 1920's.
He went on to appear in more than 400 films between 1930 and 1975. Barnett died of heart disease on August 10, 1977, at Encino Hospital Medical Center. He was 75.
Written by Lois Hire and directed by Miss Young’s brother-in-law, Norman Foster

Loretta Young was also married to fashion designer Jean Louis. He not only designed all of her clothes, he designed Eva Gabor's wardrobe for Green Acres as well.

This is How ALL Divorces should be Handled!! :) :) What a Clever approach :) But i guess it only works for "soft" people like Henry...it always depends on the man at the end of the day....
But on the other hand, although she did not get Divorce, does she still want the husband who cheated on her?? hmmmmmm...not sure i could forgive this easily...yet, he apologised so sincerely, so for the sake of the family perhaps i would - not sure how one would act when faced with something as big as this. Each case is different.

It is one of the few episodes I take issue with, but there are so many factors involved including a couples history and the hearts of those involved. If this is what her heart told her to do then it was the right choice for her and the family. I think it is very situational. A nice sentiment, just the same.

@@nikkib.schaefer2912 Yes, absolutely - i totally agree with you and indeed every case it is different. If your husband is sincere in asking for forgiveness, and you have a beautiful history together, then it's much-much easier to forgive - i agree! Wishing you a Good Lent! Period of forgiveness :)

Thanks for sharing this clever episode...Magarete quite reminds of Mrs. Arikawa, besides that the name Magarete derives from the old greek word the pearl, just like the name of Mr. Arikawa's boat. ;-)

Oh my, her husband's a nasty piece of work. Clueless comes to mind! I like this actor very much. He's been in a few of the episodes I've seen.
