LO SCALONE DI ACCESSO E PIAZZA SARZANO
Questo è uno dei quattro accessi al complesso monumentale oggi
occupato dalla Facoltà di Architettura dell’Università degli Studi di
Genova.
L’alto muraglione in cui si apre l’archivolto è stato costruito negli ultimi
anni del XVII secolo per realizzare un grande giardino pensile usato
dalle monache Domenicane di Pisa che, all’epoca, avevano qui il loro
convento.
Questo grande muro racchiude e sostiene un terrapieno formato deviando
la via di Mascherona che, prima delle trasformazioni conseguenti i
bombardamenti francesi del 1684 che distrussero in parte gli edifi ci
preesistenti, arrivava direttamente in piazza Sarzano. Per consentire il
passaggio fu realizzato questo ampio scalone.
ENTRANCE STAIRAND AND PIAZZA SARZANO
This is one of the four entrances to the monumental complex today
occupied by the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Genoa.
The high, massive wall with the vaulted opening was constructed
in the last years of the XVII century to support a large roof garden
used by the Dominican Sisters of Pisa who had their convent here
during that period.
This great wall encloses and supports an earthwork formed by
deviating Via di Mascherona that, before the transformations
following the bombardment by the French in 1684 that partly
destroyed the preexisting buildings, arrived directly in Piazza
Sarzano. To permit passage of the altered street, this grand stair
was constructed at the same time.
