  • Don't worry, I still play piano and will keep doing that. I am hoping to, at some point, record piano and cello duets with myself. There are many amazing pieces for piano and cello, so who knows.
    I always found the cello a beautiful instrument, but used to be afraid that my piano practise would suffer from it. While that might be true, if you are consistent with practise on both instruments it is very doable. It is very fun to learn the cello, but requires dedication. At the start, I couldn't play for more than 30 minutes at a time, because my fingers, shoulders and neck would hurt. Also, at the start, you will sound very bad, and since I used to have roommates, it is sometimes difficult to not care that you sound bad. But the main thing I enjoyed was seeing that I am in fact capable of doing this; at first, it is very daunting and the learning curve is quite steep. But practise is there to save the day. This video is also a nice way to show that anyone can do it, if they really want to. I sounded like crap, but I have improved. So you can do it too.
    Some youtube channels that really helped me in the first couple weeks of learning cello:

    You're not "making me listen to this"! I'm doing it voluntarily. It's fun watching other beginners' progress. I'm 77 and in month ten now, and playing fairly confidently in several church ensembles.

    I play guitar, piano and drums casually and stop on these progress videos from time to time to tell myself "hey see what you can achieve if you practice more".
    Because I tend to just try to play / learn a piece I like and then just play that for some time, without feeling the need to "improve".
    Even though I improve anyway, just way slower.
    Aaaaaaaaand I was like "omg Cello sound giga difficult to learn, let's see".
    I goofed at your first day (the "oof", I couldn't not laugh), because "I feel you bro".
    And then... The Bach Cello Suite. I cried.
    I always found this piece... A masterpiece. It moves me deep.

    Thank you for sharing your journey! The amount of cello content available online is surprisingly limited, so I hope this video encourages other budding cellists to continuing learning.
    I rented one a couple weeks ago because I have always loved the sound. After I paid for the instrument, the person that checked me out asked where I would be taking lessons. The look on their face when I said I plan to teach myself seemed to wish me a feigned “good luck” and lingered as I walked out the door.
    It was a bit disheartening to discover there are so few instructional and progress videos online for the cello; I cannot help but wonder how many people are completely discouraged by this, so it is always exciting to see people shed light on the experience of learning any instrument - especially as someone whose primary instrument is quite niche.
    And it is pretty cool to see another engineer with passion for music. 🎉

I've played the violin for years, and cello for a few random weeks one summer. Your vibrato comment is interesting because for violin, we definitely have arm, wrist, and finger vibrato options/techniques. Also, Dr. Bibber is called Operation and was invented in the US :) Enjoy the musical journey!

    Great job! I got carried away watching twoset and ended up here. I'm 13 and have been playing the cello for almost 9 years. In comparison, it took me about 5 years to develop a free vibrato and I only played the Bach last year (could've done it earlier but still). The only recommendations I have are to do specific vibrato exercises and flatten your bow hand wrist a little. One other thing that might help with the vibrato is keeping your other fingers closer to the fingerboard or not lifting them up when vibrating on 3 or 4 (to add support). Other than that, amazing job and I should probably go practice now.

    Great progress! Being a musician does help accelerate the learning. I'm surprised that no one mentioned that the neck on the cello isn't aligned with the bridge properly. In the opening shot, looking down the neck of the cello towards the bridge, its obvious. I own two cellos so I know when something looks off. There should be an equal amount of finger board (or close to it) on either sides of the strings. it may just be that the bridge needs to be moved. But it could also be that the neck correctly inline with the body of the cello. my 2 cents. By the way, I'm in the US but I'm originally from Den Haag. :)

      Interesting to hear around the fingerboard, I did notice it back then but because it was a rented instrument I left it as it was. I have my own cello now so don't have the problem anymore :)

    Nice job man, you are really talented, just keep in mind that if you want to play cello seriously, just do what your teacher says. (Before that, you should find a nice teacher). If you don't care about that, you will have tension in your shoulder, arm or hands and it will hurt. Also it develops bad habits.
    But if you're playing it casually, congratulations, you're on the right way!

    your bow hand on day one is insanely good what
    it was such a good idea to play music you love, i noticed a lot of the pieces you chose were more advanced material, but very possible for beginners. I imagine your classical piano background helps you find good pieces to learn to stay interested.
    was it hard to adjust to have to think more about intonation than on piano? i play both piano and cello, but cello was my first instrument. I always wonder if pianists think of intonation any different than string players.

    • @FrankMeijering
      @FrankMeijering  3 месяца назад +1

      It did take me a while to be able to hear intonation properly. Prior to learning cello, I wouldn't be able to tell small nuances in pitch, just because I never had to think about it. But it came quite naturally afterwards.
      And yes, even now I sometimes need to sacrifice educational pieces for random things which are just fun to play. Otherwise I lose the motivation to practise.

    This is really good! I notice this in a lot of students, but when going into higher positions it will be a lot easier if you raise your left arm higher. If you're in thumb pos. don't rest your arm on the cello, that can ruin the varnish, and it will be a lot harder to play high.

    I am a semiprofessional guitar player and I also discovered violine, viola and cello as wonderful and challenging option. What I noticed is the benefit of your prerequisits of dealing with sheet music. On the other hand you should be aware that instead of always using full hair it is easier and fortunate for producing a mellow tone to tilt the bow towards the fingerboard (cello) or the bridge (violine) respectively.

    this is wonderful! I'm 22 and i've just started learning cello a few months ago! I've had around 7 lessons so far, but I do not have my own cello so my progress is slow because I only practice once a week. I was wondering if you have any tips on developing a good practice routine. Sometimes i get the chance to practice on my own, but I feel like i do not make any progress because I do not have a structured routine to follow. Do you have anything I can follow along with? Or any recommendations of people who have beginner practice routines? Thank you!

    • @FrankMeijering
      @FrankMeijering  2 года назад +1

      Hi! Nice to see you're learning cello too. So you only play during your lessons? I would recommend to rent a cello. Go to a place which seems decent, it's important to not have a very cheap one. Mine cost €30 per month, and it was actually a pretty decent one. Later you can decide to upgrade. Regarding practise, I started with "Dotzauer - violoncello schule" and "Sebastian Lee - 40 leichte etüden". I like having a book because you can just work your way through it, and practise like x amount of pieces/exercises before each lesson. That way you don't have to make up exercises, you can just open the book and go.

      scales, arpeggios, and etudes before repertoire. also try some exercises for specific techniques (shifting, vibrato, specific bow strokes) (not very fun but it helps later)
