22:44 you probably already know this, but for those of you who don't, that callback is by design. This is due to that area of the ARK being modeled after Angel Island by GUN with the intent of storing the Master Emerald. Amazing how much attention to detail the development team and composers put into this game
Hello, fellow SA2 enjoyers! So happy to see this beautiful opus experience a resurgence in popularity after the latest movie's release. Been really enjoying your content - it's exposed me to a lot of cool stuff I wasn't familiar with (namely, Ridge Racer 4's soundtrack - nonstop bops for real). Love your chill energy and thoughtful musings. Take my sub, and here's to keeping it rolling like the blue blur himself. :P
I don't know you, but you mirror the excitement and love for this game as I did both as a child and in my own death chambers. I love you for that, as I love myself, and love this game. It's super fun to actually see someone else remember: "Aaaah, SONIC!" or when you mention hearing Omachao on Wild Canyons. Yeah .. Those sounds those are integrated within my core as well. Great video.
I know what you mean! I had the stupidest of smiles on my face when both her and me said “that blue hedgehog again of all places” out loud at the same time. It was heartwarming to see someone with the same sounds ingrained in their memories along with the sountdtrack
The Last Scene 100% belongs in S-tier. I'm so glad Tom Holkenborg included an homage to it at the end of the Sonic 3 movie soundtrack. And hearing Live & Learn in theaters was glorious. Holkenborg was either already a fan of SA2 and this OST or he really did his homework. Awesome vid (even if there were a few takes I'd argue with), but you got my subscription easily.
Yo battleapple, this video is so comforting. Mainly because I never really see people talk about the ENTIRE OST. I use to play the songs from the menu in my elementary days when I did my homework lmao. I can’t believe how much of a resurgence SA2 is getting. I always thought it would just get the typical nostalgia treatment in mainstream, but it’s actually popular again now. Also…TRUE STORY IS *S-TIER*
The Sonic 3 movie gave me *such Sonic Brainrot* that it’s not even funny. I’d been a casual fan for a while, but the third movie converted me to a stan. Your channel has been such a great resource for really delving into the world of Sonic, as I never played the games growing up
Having grown up playing SA2B I could totally relate to so much of what you were saying about these songs and stages. I also really liked your insights into how each of the songs function musically. I learned a good few things. Subscribed!
@@battleapple I was also obsessed with "I'm a Spy" when I was younger. I love Tabitha Fair's singing with that walking bass in "Lovely Gate 3" and I totally hear Omochao's propeller starting up as soon as "Wild Canyon" begins.
Honestly hearing you go “fuck this stage” sometimes caught me off guard cus I’m just so used to you being polite lmao. 11/10, you unlocked repressed memories on that stupid sand tails stage
Knuckles' theme placement really stung! I prefer this to SA1's but I understand, it is a lot more full on and can seem messy. Pyramind Cave's placement is great and agreed, although I'd place it in S as one of if not my fave. Nice video though, I'm also up for more ratings of Sonic games.
Loved this video, SA2 has my favorite music from the 3D generation. EGGMAN and Amy's theme are my favorites of the character themes, with lot of love for Pumpkin Stage theme and of course the Crush 40 songs.
If you will do this tier list thing again with another sonic game, please consider showing just some seconds of every single Song. I can't tell why but it's important for me to see you jamming and seeing what you like or dislike about the song. The reaction is priceless 😊
Another person who loves "Fly in the Freedom"? Hell yeah. Of the character themes, I feel that one is talked about the least, so I was pleased to see this on top. Awesome video overall. I would love to see more tier lists from you.
I actually listen to the SA2 soundtrack quite frequently. I feel like rouge’s soundtrack is one of the best lyrically and the least corny out of all of them. It’s also great characterization of rouge. I agree you could listen to fly in the freedom being performed and have no idea it was a song from a sonic game!
Soundtrack truly has something for everyone. Like Metal harbor and green forest would go so high on my list cuz like, try listening to those in the car and drive slow. Challenge level impossible. But I like to see someone value the jazzy rouge songs so high.
Yes the Rouge tracks had all real musicians. Mostly Americans from what I can gather. Sonic uses Japanese musicians almost exclusively now. 19. Bright Sound ...for Dry Lagoon 20. Lovely Gate 3 ...for Egg Quarters 21. I'm A Spy ...for Security Hall 22. 34°N, 12°E ...for Mad Space (Music & Arrangement: F. Kumatani ...except for #20 as K. Tokoi) Backing Tracks Produced by Atsushi "Sushi" Kosugi (Beat On Beat, inc.) Brass Arrangement by Tony Kadreck Chorus - Tabitha Fair, Guitars - Romero Lubambo Bass - Tim Lefebvre (except for #20 as David Finick) Organ - Albert Menendez, Drums - Ben Wittman Percussion - Bashiri Johnson, Horn Section - East 4th Horns Programming - Fumie Kumatani Recorded at Avatar Studio & wavemaster studio Recorded by Roy Hendrickson Mixed at wavemaster studio Mixed by Hirokazu Akashi As you can see, Lovely Gate is the only one written by Kenichi Tokoi. The other three along with Fly in the Freedom were written by Fumie Kumatani.
Glad I'm not the only one that got stunlocked by Crazy Gadget as a wee lad. Also, I don't know if you've heard NiGHTS into Dreams' ost but I think you'd love that one since you like Sonic CD's. They share a composer.
Knuckles songs are great and one of the most underrated scenes is when team dark forms it should've showed rouge creeping around the central control room tho to make it more interesting
Have you been to a Sonic Symphony performance? Hearing the songs live really puts them in a new perspective. Live and Learn was fully cemented as my favorite, and What I'm Made Of climbed up to my top 3. Definitely worth it for Sonic fans!
Unknown from M.E v2 in D tier is wild lmao. But other than that and a few other choices I think it’s a solid list! Tails themes are super underrated and I never appreciated them as a kid. Also glad we can all agree that Rouge and Knuckles have the best music.
SA2 has to be one of the most consistently good gaming OSTs out there. My personal top 3 would be city escape, metal harbour and radical highway. Supporting Me has been growing on me since the Shadow Generations Remix (which has a great OST in its own right)
I'm not sure any other Sonic ost plays around with leitmotifs nearly as much as this one did.. truly incredible stuff when you start listening close enough ❤
@ Right? SA2, 3D Blast & Unleashed used them pretty often. 06 used them for some occasions, for example, Tropical Jungle using Crisis City but they didn't do it nearly as much.
I haven't seen the video yet but City Escape, Aquatic Mine, Metal Harbour, Rouge's theme song, Meteor Herd, Live And Learn and The Last Scene are all S-tier in my opinion. Everything else is very good, but slightly below S-tier.
YES! I love SA2'S OST because it's so varied for how much you can do with a guitar. My personal favorites are Supporting Me, Escape from the City, Rumbling HWY, Dive into the Mellow, Masters of the Desert, E.G.G.M.A.N., Mr. Unsmiley, For TRUE Story, Trespasser, I'm A Spy, Scramble for the Core, The Last Scene, SA2 in the Groove, Throw it All Away, Chao Karate and of course Live & Learn. The soundtrack as a whole is a banger for sure and regularly occupies my workout playlist. That's a given though because almost all sonic OSTS are amazing. A really underrated one is Team Sonic Racing's OST. Tee Lopes and Jun Senoue really brought their A game and even brought back Crush 40 for Green Light Ride. Just don't let Jun near a Genesis synthesizer.
This game was a HUGE part of my childhood. It wasn't the best gameplay-wise, but it made up for it in atmosphere and story. Shadow was when my obsession with anti-heros started- to this day one of my fave video game characters. I imagine they did a good job with the movie (still need to see it). I make music and some of the first beats I made were remixes to "Supporting Me" and "For True Story". The Crush 40 songs are legendary and my friends and I still randomly sing them to this day 😅. My favorite is the SA2 version of "It Doesn't Matter". If you take requests, another game with a good soundtrack is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Also a great game to just play, very relaxing. Chrono Trigger, as well.
This is the 40 minutes condensate of my childhood. I was 9 when i played SA2 Battle on my GC and i play it every few years since then. This OST is in my soul and avery inch of my body, it's so special in my videogame memories. P.s. Meteor Herd is everything
This is definitely an interesting list! I'm a musician (an amateure one with zero authority on the matter, haha) and SA2B is literally one of my biggest inspirations. I'm talking, like... when I was a kid, I sang the SA2 version of "It Doesn't Matter" in my 3rd grade talent show. My stepdad recorded the audio onto a cassette tape by hooking up the AV cables from the GameCube into his stereo, haha. That said, my list for what I would consider "bangers" from this game would be honestly completely different than yours, which is totally fine! My S tiers would be: Mission Street (top video game song in general, tbh), Prof. Omochao, Live and Learn, Pyramid Cave, Meteor Herd, Let's Make it, and the Last Scene. Honestly I give a lot of favoritism to songs with Jun Senoue's guitar playing. I also think "Gun Mobile" is a really interesting song because it is very repetitive, but is also isn't. It constantly goes back and forth between a repeated riff and an improvised one every two(?) measures. Two measures of of repetition, followed by two measures of the guitar and the bass just kind of going at it however they see fit. You're definitely right about Meteor Herd, btw! :)
So many hidden gems in this OST. Jun Senoue was a MADMAN here - so much juicy guitar throughout! Literally one of the best and most enjoyable and legendary soundtracks in gaming period! Music so good, my girlfriend added some of it to her 5k and 10k playlists when she goes on runs solely from exposure! And no - your list is solid. I realize that some songs I have inherently internalized bias towards because I hate the stages they’re associated with, like Mad Space, for example lol, but absolutely solid Tier list nonetheless!
I have to say your mic voice is very easy on the ears. Sometimes its tough to listen to someone for 30 minutes but here I dont even notice when the 30 minutes pass by lol
It's always really cool to see how people feel on certain songs and what their tastes are when it comes to music. I'm partial to a lot of the Shadow-centric songs because anything that Fumie Kumatani touches will live rent free in my head.
Such a fun video! Agreed with a lot of your takes, this is my all time favorite video game soundtrack so I have some strong feelings about it. The only ranking that offended me was Masters of the Desert, that's one of the coolest songs in the game IMO
You know, I recently heard a version of Let's Make it that starts with just the bass, it has to be one of my favorite tracks in the game since that discovery, an S for me
Blind guesses. S-tier songs, for me at least: - Fly In The Freedom - Throw It All Away - Space Trip Steps - For True Story (Sonic Vs. Shadow round 2) - All of Rogue's stages but if I had to pick one Lovely Gate 3 (Egg Quarters) - Supporting Me - Live and Learn Also, I feel SA1's soundtrack was more stage focused as SA2 was more character/story focused. SA1 did have a better overall soundtrack, but SA2 had more bangers that stood out. Both are legendary soundtracks. Another legendary soundtrack I recommend: F-Zero GX.
seeing you check out ridge racer 4, space channel 5, sf3, and Persona?! So crazy im glad someone loves this rabbithole too. please check out these gems i'd love for more people to love this music. Tunic OST by Lifeformed and Janice Kwan, when the first notes of "Memories of Memories" hits you can tell this OST has something special Danganronpa OST by Masafumi Takada, namely the songs that start with "Beautiful" PHILOSOPHY in a Tea Cup by Tsuneo Imahori, this is just a song off an anime classic that has some dnb in it since SA2 music has that influence Takada is fr in the same breath as Shoji Meguro from the Persona series, or Akira Yamoaka from the Silent Hill series
Only certified real ones recognize Reflection and The Last Scene’s rightful spots at the top ☝️ they’re so frequently overlooked in this sea of bangers but man the bittersweet nature of them gets me in my feels every time
Fly into the Freedom is one of the best songs in gaming history, it is unfortunate it shares a game with at least 2, maybe 3 more of them, so it gets forgotten.
I usually avoid tier lists but almost fully agree with this one, personally didn't care for Rouge's theme as a kid but it's 100% S worthy as an adult. & only, I'd put Shadow's theme maaaybe in A, & The Supernatural in B at least 😭 I also used to hate Shadow's theme (my child brain just heard pure noise) but semi-obsessed with it now. also 'Remember Me?' I can understand people not liking, but I'd probably have that one also in B, since it's grown on me a bit and has a cool sound effect that sounds like a voice saying "EGGMAAAAN" Anyway good ranks
SA2's soundtrack is hands down one of my favourites out there. It's just amazing stuff all around. I generally like the tracks that play in the Sonic levels the most by far, but over the years I have really gotten to appreciate the tracks in Rouge's levels more. Maybe I was too dumb as a kid to truly appreciate those back in the day 😅
Very fun video, though as a diehard SA2 fan I am obliged to mention that you missed the third Cannon's Core theme ("Deep Inside Of...") from the list 😅 Not exactly your fault considering there were quite a few tracks left out of the Spotify/official album tho
My list would be similar, accept I love the Shadow songs. But I understand why someone wouldn't like them as much. Also, I'm glad I got to hear the glorious guitar solo in This Way Out, that shit is too good.
i was literally going to test out a 4K mod this month cause i heard the dream cast mini got canceled right before christmas. how does sega cancel the last console twice its fucking maddening!
All Shadow music done with Everett Bradley and Rouge music gets the S rank for me, and the Sonic levels until later on in the game. Knuckles music except for Unknown From ME (saved mainly by Marlon Saunders) is right down there in the swamp... I mean its rap music. Come on
We are in agreement on the Knuckles stages by Tomoya Ohtani being highly rated. Though Ghost Pumpkins Soup is my favorite. Such Dr Dre production vibes.
I have a lot of SA1 bias (I'm older), but watching this video is the first time I decided I like Live and Learn better than Open Your Heart. I think I always thought Live and Learn is cheesier, but checking today and... if it's cheesier, that doesn't make it the worse song.
Im surprised where you put Unknown from Me. I felt if you took the lyrics out and just listen to the instrumental part, you'd love it more as I listen to the instrumental one more.
It’s so hard to rank the music by character theme, but if I took all of the songs, I think I’d say Eggman has the best OST, stages and theme, Edging out Tails, Then Sonic Knuckle and Rouge are like tied. I think Shadow is last for me on OST, I literally only play Supporting me when listening to random osts, maybe h is theme song, I don’t care for any of his stage osts,
Please don't take this the wrong way. I mean no offense when I say this, but after watching this video, I just think you're not a big fan of rock music in general. Lol
Ok now this just needs to be done for every Sonic game. No pressure.
Zero pressure, of course
@@js39game54 Like, zilch pressure

Absolutely correct on Meteor Herd and it's music. Absolutely underappreciated.

Gotta really Appreciate how the Knuckles raps are a cool deep dive into Knuckles’ thoughts. Also Fly into Freedom is a Perfect Theme song for Rouge
Rumbling HWY makes me feel things. I dont know why, I wasnt that young when I first played SA2, but it feels nostalgic. Bitter sweet or something idk

In a very missable moment, there's a wonderful easter egg from the 3rd movie in the form of Ivo's Ringtone. It's E.G.G.M.A.N.

I think you should listen to the Sonic Unleashed soundtrack it’s great
I usually avoid tier lists but almost fully agree with this one, personally didn't care for Rouge's theme as a kid but it's 100% S worthy as an adult.
& only, I'd put Shadow's theme maaaybe in A, & The Supernatural in B at least 😭 I also used to hate Shadow's theme (my child brain just heard pure noise) but semi-obsessed with it now.
also 'Remember Me?' I can understand people not liking, but I'd probably have that one also in B, since it's grown on me a bit and has a cool sound effect that sounds like a voice saying "EGGMAAAAN"
Anyway good ranks
You’ve got to check out Outrun 2006 Coast to Coast’s VGM. I had an absolute blast watching you jam out to RRT4
This list is psychotic 10/10
SA2's soundtrack is hands down one of my favourites out there. It's just amazing stuff all around.
I generally like the tracks that play in the Sonic levels the most by far, but over the years I have really gotten to appreciate the tracks in Rouge's levels more. Maybe I was too dumb as a kid to truly appreciate those back in the day 😅
Is it bad that I knew you would put fly in freedom on s tier XDD so based
Saw space trip steps in S tier in the thumbnail. Obviously I agree so I clicky click
Very fun video, though as a diehard SA2 fan I am obliged to mention that you missed the third Cannon's Core theme ("Deep Inside Of...") from the list 😅
Not exactly your fault considering there were quite a few tracks left out of the Spotify/official album tho
You’re right, I noticed that after the fact too 🤦🏻♀️ I even made the image for it but somehow I missed adding it to the list. 😭😭
@battleapple Rip lol
Which tier would it have gone in? 😆
My list would be similar, accept I love the Shadow songs. But I understand why someone wouldn't like them as much. Also, I'm glad I got to hear the glorious guitar solo in This Way Out, that shit is too good.
OMG i need to re-visit the Sonic Adventure 2 soundtrack again. Rouge's songs are PHENOMENAL :O
9:07 Tails out here catching strays
17:58 lmao. I had the exact same thoughts. But for me it was a final death match. Who will stand as the true hedgehog.
Hey how can I get any song ost recommendations on your channel ? Please and thanks
i was literally going to test out a 4K mod this month cause i heard the dream cast mini got canceled right before christmas.
how does sega cancel the last console twice its fucking maddening!
Speaking of SEGA, do you like the music from the Daytona USA arcade game? They actually released a 30th anniversary deluxe edition album on Spotify!
Sonic 3, please.

I have a lot of SA1 bias (I'm older), but watching this video is the first time I decided I like Live and Learn better than Open Your Heart. I think I always thought Live and Learn is cheesier, but checking today and... if it's cheesier, that doesn't make it the worse song.
I'm a sucker for every Shadow track. They're all S to me honestly.
Im surprised where you put Unknown from Me. I felt if you took the lyrics out and just listen to the instrumental part, you'd love it more as I listen to the instrumental one more.
It’s so hard to rank the music by character theme, but if I took all of the songs, I think I’d say Eggman has the best OST, stages and theme,
Edging out Tails,
Then Sonic Knuckle and Rouge are like tied.
I think Shadow is last for me on OST, I literally only play Supporting me when listening to random osts, maybe h is theme song, I don’t care for any of his stage osts,
Before I watch Pyramid cave better be top 5 lmao
React to the ICO/Shadow of the Collosus músic pls 🙏 I love your channel, greetings from Santiago, Chile
i miss bulbasaur in the background haha
What about Sonic Frontiers soundtrack?
Quick question. Is your channel name related to Sharon Apple?
ALSO you HAVE to listen to G-Darius's soundtrack on PS1. IT IS OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!

I enjoy the sonic themes
Riot for Mr. Unsmiley ;(
Please don't take this the wrong way. I mean no offense when I say this, but after watching this video, I just think you're not a big fan of rock music in general. Lol
For sure, when it comes to rock I lean more towards classic rock and jazz rock 😅
