      Really? In Barbra's book, she writes that he told her " I thought we were going to have an affair" and he was upset, and then she told him "I don't work that way" because he was married with a new baby (which his WIFE AND BABY WAS ON LOCATION with him- someone I know was there), and Barbra said that she wasn't attracted to him. Pretty presumtuous that he wanted an affair. Then she writes that later he came to her for a recommendation for something and she said that she could not write that, but that she got the best out of him as an actor, but that he was a PIA to everyone on set, that he was acting like a Prima Dona. But he told her later that he was scared of her as a director, and he was young and it was his first big role.

    A script helper? Not how Barbra's book says it went .. the script had been written and revised a few times before she approached Mandy. Firstly she wanted Richard Gere for the part (Mandy mentioned him briefly).. but he wouldn't accept her as an actor and director .. she wanted Mandy having searched everywhere because he was .. in her words .. a character actor because she thought she wanted the talent more than the looks in the end (she had wanted someone who had a both masculine and feminine face which Mandy doesn't have) . She sent him the seven-volume 'The Legends of the Jews as a crash course in the Talmud and arranged for him to visit a yeshiva to observe the students. He had homework to do before he stepped on the set she says.
    In the book she also says they were meant to be lying in bed together having made love .. but by that point Mandy had been making her life miserable for months and she couldn't bear the thought. She had to constantly get him to stop overacting which he felt really difficult.
    This film was Barbra's first in Directing and it seems she was almost an outcaste in the world of Directing .. Steven Spielberg made a nice comment and after that the press said he was Barbra's mentor on the movie when in fact he had nothing to do with it, which he himself said about later (the mark of a true genius).
    Men always seem to have to be in charge, take the credit etc as Mandy does here saying he helped with the script well it's well done to Barbra for her wonderful effort in bringing Yentl to the screen .. as both an actress and a Director ... she excelled. Pity the men in the industry feel so threatened by her they couldn't give her the true credit she deserved .. guess it says more about them than her .. a true genius doesn't have to belittle anyone to be great themselves .. they just are great (like Steven Spielberg). At least Mandy says here Barbra was wonderful. I have to give Barbra credit she doesn't see criticism as a put down but rather as a learning opportunity .. another mark of a true genius in my opinion.

    Amazing movie-the songs, the very best. But what was really strange, to me, was that even though Streisand sings like nobodies business-and who can deny that?, but still, not one song in this movie sung by Mandy, who also sings like no one I have ever heard.

    • @argiano1
      @argiano1 8 лет назад +2

      Absolutely my thoughts as well. Maybe Streisand is as selfish an egomaniac as is claimed by many.

    • @jimquantic
      @jimquantic 8 лет назад +5

      That could be. But he tells the story differently than that. He said he declined the project, then he was invited to meet her. He went on to say that he openly told her WHY he was not comfortable with it as written and that she was extremely open to criticism, and that they sat down and went through it, pretty well line by line, and she encouraged his edits. When finished, he was on board, welcomed by Streisand as a collaborator on the project.

    • @driftersky
      @driftersky 5 лет назад +1

      I was thinking that way about Barbra too... But then what I realized was that Yentl is a story about this girl's point of view experience, she only sings when she was thinking in the experience. There are Yentl's thoughts with melodies. Even though I love Mandy's beautiful voice, wishing he had sang in Yentl... if Mandy joined in, it might not feel right.

    • @peterdavino4408
      @peterdavino4408 Год назад

      No. The whole idea of the film was that the narrative ( point of view) was singular & coming from the main protagonist (Yentl). If Mandy or any other characters had sung then it would have thrown the narrative into a kind of dissolution. It would have taken away the focus without adding anything other than melody.

    That movie went against everything Hollywood believes and practices. No one honestly talked about the message of that movie. Great lines like the one he was about to say before they cut off the clip. *"There's nothing more beautiful in the*
    *world then being able to give birth to sons, being a wife and a* *mother, ...it's a gift"* or when Barbara was explaining to Avecdore in the last scenes when she revealed herself and
    they were talking about her marrying Hadass. *Avedore: "It's* *valid Rabbi's witnessed it"* Yentyl: *"Witnessed what? a* *marriage between two women? it's null and void"* Then he pushes the point of the Rabbi's Testament, and she says
    * Avecdore, according to *God* it was not a marriage"!*
    Yeah stuff like that, right in their own faces and yet they gloss over it with these stupid interviews talking about any
    and everything else but the obvious... By the way they never play this movie. You always have to go and seek it out.

    • @sole_to_soul
      @sole_to_soul 3 года назад +3

      Actually, the main message of the story is how sexist and illogical the rules of religion are:
      Excluding women from even the opportunity to learn their faith's literature, then claiming that women aren't intelligent enough to understand it all.
      The basic refrains are: "You can't because you're a woman," and "Because it's written in our holy book" (which is written by men who are presumably transcribing G-d's laws).
