Dropping Things Into The Sun is Hard....

  • After facing off with the horrors of Galactic Hitman, Nerdcubed decided that the best solution would be to send all copies of the game into the sun. As it happens this is harder than most people realise, so I prepared a demonstration using realistic scaled Kerbal Space Program.

      James Monahan No, dumb dumb. During the night the sun still emits what’s called “invisible light.” That’s the reason the mun still shines but you can’t see the sun. So you simply do several scans across several points, and triangulate from there. Much easier than what he did. Yes I’m fun at parties.

    Mr Scott, I must wholeheartedly thank you for this video. Not only for the entertainment factor but also because I learned something. Or to be more precise, finally visualize how gravity assist work. Of course I was aware of the general concept, but seeing it here, how by coming in front of Jupiter it's orbital velocity acts to slow down the spacecraft - it finally clicked with me. Much easier to visualize than in the more typical, simplified picture depicting the maneuver, like the one on Wikipedia.

    I just know that someone thinks it makes sense to go at night.
    For Baja SAE we had to make our truck float. A young liberal arts degree seeker asked me what's the deepest water it could float in. I managed to keep a straight face and tell her that it could float in water up to 100 feet deep, but any deeper than that and it would sink. She looked concerned for my safety so I assured her they made sure the area we drove was never more than 20 feet deep.
    I didn't want to leave her misinformed so I told her I was joking, but I don't think she got it.
    Another asked me how long it took to drive to Hawaii. I told her 56 hours, and I slept at rest stops in my car and exclusively ate beef en-route. She also asked me the current exchange rate, I told her 7 Hawaiian dollars per US.
    So my point is, Mr. Manley, please remember that as it is for "Every time you ____ god kills a kitten", every time you make a joke we'll understand there is someone else who will take it literally and attain a state of even higher scientific illiteracy.
    But honestly that night time thing was just hilarious.

    Three mission profiles were proposed for Pioneer 10/11-type spacecraft, one of which was the "solar impact via Jupiter" trajectory that you demonstrated in the video (all three were illustrated and discussed in Arthur C. Clarke's 1968 non-fiction book, "The Promise of Space"). They were as follows:
    One was a solar system escape trajectory (which Pioneer 10 used, by passing behind Jupiter), one was a fall into the Sun (by passing *ahead* of Jupiter, to cancel out the probe's velocity) in order to collect data on a large cross-section of the solar system from Jupiter into the Sun, and one (which Pioneer 11 took in a modified form, to reach Saturn from Jupiter) involved passing very close under Jupiter's south pole, which hurled the spacecraft high above (north of) the ecliptic plane, back across the solar system to Saturn, and:
    Pioneer H (which would have been Pioneer 12 had it flown and been successful--it now hangs in the National Air and Space Museum, as a replica of Pioneer 10) was made out of spare parts for the Pioneer F (10) and G (11) spacecraft. It was intended to fly the "full" Jupiter flyby-facilitated, out-of-ecliptic mission, which would have passed over the Sun's poles after being launched in 1974 (the Ulysses spacecraft later did this), but despite lobbying by NASA's Ames Research Center, NASA Headquarters refused to approve the mission proposal. (The spent TE364-4 third stage "kick" motor from Pioneer 11's Atlas-Centaur launch vehicle is believed to be in a Pioneer H-like solar orbit.)

      +Hamachingo To expand on Scott's comment: An apsis is an orbit's extremity. The word is related to "apse," the highest part of an arch, and in English it's not uncommon for space geeks to say "apse" instead of "apsis" for brevity.
      All orbits have a periapsis, which is the spot closest to the object you're orbiting. Elliptical orbits also have an apoapsis, which is the spot farthest from the object. (The remaining orbit types are parabolic and hyperbolic--they pass by the object never to return.)
      Since a lot of human space flight is around the Earth, "perigee" and "apogee" is used more often. For the Sun, they use "perihelion" and "apohelion," "helios" being Greek for "sun". There's other suffixes for other bodies in the real Solar System, but you can use "periapsis" and "apoapsis" instead and as long as they know which object is being orbited, all is well.

    in 7th grade we were tasked with coming up with a way to deal with all the trash in a sort of thought experiment.
    I said to launch it all into the sun. Then I grew up and happened to learn about orbital mechanics and the cost of launching even a tiny payload, which eventually brought me to this video which reminded me of that one time I suggested launching all of the *worlds* trash into the sun, which caused me to physically cringe.
    Life is interesting.

      send him with all of his music in a box together, since if there's not enough room for all the CDs and things then they'll just break and if there's not enough oxygen he'll just suffocate and it's no big deal because killing him and destroying all of his music is the point.
      hey, while you're at it, stuff the galactic hitman copies in there as well- the more the better!

    What's delta-V?

    • @scottmanley
      @scottmanley  8 лет назад +5

      +ParaglidingManiac It's a bit like the range or endurance of your vehicle, changing an orbit requires a certain change in velocity or delta-v, if you run out of delta-v you end up stranded in your current orbit.

    • @elonwhatever
      @elonwhatever 8 лет назад +1

      +ParaglidingManiac As Scott says it's change in velocity. The potential for delta-V is determined by the amount of fuel a spaceship carries and the mass (think weight of a ship under 1G) of the ship. The lower the mass of a ship, the bigger the change in velocity per unit of fuel burned.
      Other considerations also come into this, the thrust produced by the engines, and fuel effiency of those, the drag from the atmosphere during liftoff, and when skimming in the atmosphere, and gravity.
      A fun way for a spaceship to change their delta-V is by dipping into an atmosphere and breaking, allowing to change velocity without using fuel.
      If you want to understand it you should probably watch some of Scotts earlier videos where he explains the mechanics involved with getting a spaceship into orbit.

      That would be acceleration is basic terms

    • @PTNLemay
      @PTNLemay 8 лет назад

      +ParaglidingManiac One way of looking at it is if you took your spaceship, put it in empty space, and burned in one direction until the fuel tanks ran dry. You would then be moving at the same speed as your total deltaV. That's what it means, really. Total difference in velocity.
      In practice you spend it here and there, sometimes to speed up, sometimes to slow down. But it still totals a net change in velocity.

    Wow, Scott came up with a cool plot to a Sci-Fi movie and doesn't even realize it!
    As he mentioned, something, not dangerous, from the Earth, a video game, or Space probe or something. It gets sent out of the Solar System only to morph with another entity in space. It returns to terrorize our Solar System and even the Earth! That sounds like the plot to best Sci-Fi movie ever! It would probably scare the Vee-Jeurr out of everyone that watches it! ;)

    If Jupiter wasn't there, wouldn't the method with the lowest delta-V required to drop your orbit into the Sun be a bi-elliptic transfer?
    1) First, from Earth, accelerate in the prograde direction up to ALMOST the escape velocity of the solar system (I think this would take like an extra 11 km/s delta-V)
    2) At the far point of your highly elliptical orbit, probably somewhere in or near the Kuiper belt and like three to five decades later, your transverse velocity with respect to the Sun would be very slow and it would only take a small amount of delta-V to cancel it out to zero. After that, the spacecraft would spend the next several decades slowly falling directly into the Sun. The total delta-V expenditure would be something on the order of 12 km/s, I think, so only about a third of what it would take if you started from Earth and tried to directly kill your orbital velocity. But it would take like 80 or 90 years to do. (Compare to the orbit of Halley's Comet- aphelion of 35 AU and an orbital period of 77 years.) That said, if you could spend a bit of extra delta-V to make it go faster.
    Anyway, it would be time consuming, but in KSP, we have time compression. :)
