Samsung’s revenue is 22.4% of South Korea’s GDP. Their assets enable 42% of the GDP and they make 20% of the exports. Imagine how powerful they are there 😱
They literally have their leaders commit crime and yet barely, if ever, get jail time or punishment because, and I quote, "Samsung is too important to fail". Like, seriously, it's an absolute dystopian.
Dont tell Kim
They got their oiwn military department already 💀
now THAT is a company too big to fail.
In SK, they make all kinds of things, including houses.
Samsung repair is ridiculous. My mom had a green Galaxy S22 and accidentally cracked her screen. She contacted Samsung to get it fixed and they said she could mail it in where it takes 3 to 6 weeks for it to be fixed and returned, and it gets wiped in the process. For a fucking screen repair, why???
They said the other option is a local authorized repair shop. She called TWO of them who told her the exact same thing - they are not allowed to keep a stock of parts from Samsung and they have to be ordered at-the-time when a customer needs a repair. And they both said the green screens show "unknown availability" and so they have no idea when they'd receive a panel - likely many weeks. Keep in mind this was the same year the phone released. My mom was like okay I don't care about green then, just give me a black screen. Their response was "we're not allowed to put mismatching colors in repairs" and so they refused to do it.
So all of the official repair channels were complete fucking shams. What'd she end up doing? Calling an independent repair shop who got it fixed that day (albeit with a black screen still, because he said he's never been capable of obtaining any panel other than black). But at least it was a done in a sensible timeline.
I swear my story sounds so pro-independent repair that it almost sounds fake, but it's because these bogus "repair services" truly are as fucking terrible as it seems. Samsung literally just doesn't supply the parts like the colored screen panels because they want you to replace the entire device. It's fucking criminal.
You're data may be lost means they replace whole assemblies, not only the broken part. I've gotten phone insurance that's through asurion and my experience so for had been great. Flat fee, they send you a replacement device and give you a week to send the broken one in, which for the most part is enough time to transfer and setup new device with the old, formatting and sending it back. I've replaced i think 5 $400+ phones for only a fee of $70 to $130 each time, and they were all cracked/broken screens
You can bet the ranch that if they haven't already gathered and stored all your mother's data, they they sure did before they wiped it and if they already did they used all the data that was directly on her to compare with the the data they already had to check that their servers, software, spyware were working properly and weren't missing any tidbit of your mother's life.
We know that's not fake and they make so many hoops to go through. It's so you just buy a new phone instead of repairing even if it's a thousand dollar phone. That's even better!
I pay for the apple pro insurance which has been good for me besides being 10 bucks a month. But if something breaks I start a claim and they'll mail a phone out which arrives in a 2-3 days. I send my phone to them, if you get a phone before sending it you have to have about a 400 dollar charge pending until they get your phone.
@@legionofanon “only a fee of 70 - 130” plus the $10-$20 monthly they charge for the insurance
@@quartzofcourse i mean, i was breaking them about once a year, and two of them were with a $1k phone, so the about 250 over that year was still significantly better than buying a whole new phone

Step 1. Complete the CIA interrogation techniques 101.
Step 2. Learn how to be an a-hole to customers.
Step 3 (optional training) Learn how to fix samsung devices.
Step 4 Learn the art of waterboarding customers who do not want to comply.
To be fair, i wouldn't be surprised if Step 3 was mandatory, but only so that they know what to avoid.
Honestly, learning CIA interrogation techniques is fairly useful.. I'm just saying...
Louis, because of your tireless work for right to repair, I have become a full believer in the cause and I tell everyone who will listen about you and about right to repair.
The United States was built on the idea that a man makes his own life for himself as long as he doesn't harm others to do so. Independent, self-starting, freedom-loving individuals made this country what it is, and garbage-fire corporations and greedy politicians are trying, step-by-step, to take those freedoms and rights away from us.
Louis, you are the man with the plan. I worry for your personal safety. But in Texas, at least, you are safer than in most other places. Go get 'em, tiger.
This is the embodiment of one of the best phrases of all time: "Your freedom ends where mine begins".
"The United States was built on the idea that a man makes his own life for himself as long as he doesn't harm others to do so". Uh, I don't know about that. Consider that considerations for slavery was built-in to USA Constitution.
But, political ideology is different from economic ideology. The USA is based on a capitalist economic system, and in such a system, only profit matters. This is important: ONLY PROFIT MATTERS. Paying a living wage, providing a safe workplace, protecting the environment, even making a _good_ product, are all secondary to profit. Samsung, as a for-profit corporation, is doing the exactly the _right_ actions to maximize profits for the shareholders.
If you don't like it, then we need to change to a different economic system where profits are not the _only_ measure of corporate success. Or use government legislation to force capitalist corporations to not pollute, pay living wages, honor warranties, and not take advantage of the public in general.
Forcing corporations to "do right" is not typically something conservatives encourage. Conservatives would prefer no government involvement in the "free market". Texas is very conservative, so I don't think that:
"But in Texas, at least, you are safer than in most other places."
is accurate. You are more likely to see quality right to repair legislation pass in liberal states.

Hilariously, Louis _wants more laws_ in a world where we need fewer.
Love ya Louis. Don’t ever let the fire die! Samsung is basically blacklisted from my home going forward based on the crap they keep pulling. I do have some of their stuff, but I’ll only use it until it dies permanently. Already had to fix a tv of theirs with vertical lines over essentially 4 chip resistors that failed, and they were offering folks a tiny % of what the tv was worth after something ridiculous like only 2 years. It was obviously a design flaw, but so many were forked over by Samsung customer service. Was able to fix mine myself for ~$20 and the time it took to disassemble and learn what to do, so I’ll use it until it no longer serves its purpose. But they won’t get my money again.
The problem is that once you start paying attention, you'll start blacklisting more companies. I've blacklisted Sony, Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Samsung, Carfax, CDW, Kroger, Walmart, Intuit, Adobe, and many, many others because they do their own version of anti-consumer shit. I'm running out of places to shop and products I can buy.
Sadly, it's like voting for president - I don't like any of the options, so I vote for the _less_ bad choice.
@@TonyPombo Yup. People would see this and say well I'm going with apple instead. Apple does the same thing. I wonder why ifixit still works with apple

South Korea is like the ultimate dystopian. There, Samsung literally is the wet dream of all corporations and the end goal. The power and influences they wield is something a company like Apple or Black Rock or Microsoft can dream about and where everything is tied to Samsung and Samsung is everything.
Truly the darkest timeline.

Its because skoreas economy is basically about channeling all the money into megacorporations so korean products can compete in the international market. Its fuck everyone and everything else though
South Korea has been described as an oligopoly of the biggest firms, with Samsung being one of them. Dystopian indeed.
South Korea is just China that hasn't made the full commitment since they want the US to keep sending meatshields there. They have the same basic censorship infrastrucutre (national "firewall") that can be closed shut at a moments notice.

Samsung have their own military and so powerful that in South Korea the most young people study very hard just to get a job at Samsung's headquarters. It's really depressing. I hate Samsung because I had to get a lawyer involved just to get a brand new faulty product replaced and many others repaired
Yeah, Project Black Moon's games really are a commentary about that.
Nothing against the Wings, All for the Wings. Samsung being the Head.
Here's another goodie- Let's say you DO go through the Samsung repair partnership process. You can no longer service older Samsung devices, such as anything older than an S9+. If it's not supported with parts from their official vendors & labeled as an OEM part, along with their silly UPC scanner code, you can't use it. If you're caught using a non-OEM part under the program, even for non-supported devices (perfectly serviceable), you get a strike against you. 2-3 of those ousts you from the program, and blacklists you from any/all use of their resources, including promotional material directing their consumers to your business.
ASP program will never be worth it. You could do in 15 minutes what that program dedicates 4 hours to.
By law devices should have a repairability score which should be visible to consumers at point of sale.
And and it will corrupt in no time
Take it further
catagorise tec into 2 catagories either tec or ewaste tec needs to be repairable to make the catagory and set it up that ewaste cannot be copyright protected so anyone can take a failed ewaste product correct it then claim it

Fuck'em. Been my mantra since I was 14yrs old.
Example of immoral and unpermitted data collection:
I just got a 13yo Ford Edge. Yes i had my phones bluetooth on; for my headphones. Then next day i get a direct email to my *MAIN* email about the SUV's _"serius xm radio free trial!"_
I was so pissed. I wish i knew python to cut that software out.
Sometimes that can come from the dealer too if you bought from a dealer, as they will foreword your information to partners such as the satellite radio company. Not saying the car isn’t spying on your too, but that can come from multiple people selling your data.
As @roeboat72 stated, this very likely came from the dealer. A car from 2011 wasn't smart enough to do the shit you're talking about. It would require it to (somehow) be able to command your phone to send that data off, which a bluetooth audio connection (by itself) cant do. Newer cars however *can* transmit data, either via the car app you install on your phone, or via its own SIM connection hidden in the car itself (reason i wont by a modern car. dont need it spying on me and sending my data unauthorized).
Only way I got them to stop was telling them I would pull the hardware and return it, if it was possible
My car is a 2012, it can't spy on me. My next ride might be even older, because I like to do my own repairs & it's getting harder & harder with newer cars. I've been an electronics tech for a long time, but I prefer my cars to be as electronics-free as possible. Once I got a rental car & it started talking to me, just about caused an accident! Don't need that crap, don't want that crap, won't have that crap.
Dude, I got that 2.5 years ago when I bought a 2006 Honda Accord with XM functionality. And it doesn't even have Bluetooth!
I'm glad I use iPods for music players. I can still mod, fix, and order parts for those. Also I love using these things cuz I own the music and no one can reach into my device and pause my music.

@@pvshka SMASNUG WHAT HAVE YOU DONE
Did you know that according to EU law a country should do data minimalisation. That means that you only may take data from a customer that is necessary to handle a repair or purchase. I.e. if you buy software download only first and last name and mailaddress may be asked, if a purchase will be send to someone an address is requierd and may only be used for that one time delivery, after this address data must be deleted. The EU GDPR laws are really strict, and privacy is rule!
Apple done me dirty many years ago, so I decided to never buy any of their products ever again. I am now on Windows and Samsung. But the time has come to ditch those two as well.
So hello Linux and... Nokia? Sigh...
I miss the days when making a good product and selling it to a happy customer was a good bizznizz plan. Verry fiew actors in tech do this anymore.
Louis Rossmann is a wonderful teacher and deserves all my deepest respect. 🙏
It's a real dilemma. I won't buy Apple, I don't like their corporate walled city policies, I loathe the fact that the devices are made by slave labor in China, so no Apple for me. Microsoft is almost as criminal, they're trying hard to have a walled city of their own, but so far I've been able to stifle them (O&OShutUp+ is a godsend.) Samsung is harder; I need a phone & tablet that work- and I've tried a lot of the Chinese knockoffs but most of them die ignominiously or don't do what I need- so I seem to be stuck with Samsung. So far I haven't had any problems that I can't fix myself, but I know it's just rolling the dice. I sure wish we had American manufacturers who'd honor the products they make, but that's long gone. Sigh.
Nokia is dead, shut down by microsoft. It's gonna be chinese phones or sony's very expensive ones for you.
Motorola phones are passable. Still a tool of the CCP, but you can buy a budget model for $130, and it has a headphone jack and a microSD slot. If you're stuck buying from one shit company or another, you can at least make sure they get as little money as possible.
Samsung tried to f me over with one of their POS monitors and tried to squeeze more money out of me to repair it even though it was a common issue that should have been recalled. Since then, it's cost them from sale consideration of 2 gaming monitors, a 60+ inch tv, a 50 inch tv, a replacement fridge, a washer and dryer (to be fair, this was never going to be a consideration due to their reputation) and I tell everybody I know the story so they reconsider buying anything branded samsung. fuck em.
Keep fighting the good fight, Mr. Rossman.

It's not about what you want.. It's about the average person. The average consumer is not well-informed.
But, but, but glue makes it harder to repair and fails more easily so you will have to buy a new product from us.
But then how would you get that feeling of annoyance when you send it off for an "official" battery replacement from the manufacturer costing more than the device is worth and it comes back glued together looking like a dog's dinner?
I actually prefer to have my phone as slick as possible and using glue instead of screws enables that. You don't need to be opening your phone all the time anyways. And removing a glued screen or back cover is not such a big deal anyways once you do it once .

Thanks for the video Louis. I got a Samsung top load washing machine that uses a counter balance at the top which is filled with water. These are notorious for shaking like crazy (after the warranty expires) because the water slowly drains out over a couple year period, the shaking gets worse and worse, which makes the customer think it's just "worn out". If you drill two holes in the counterbalance ring (Under the splash guard) where the plugs were ultrasonically sealed and thread it, you can refill with water and plug with a couple screws wrapped in teflon tape. This appears to be an example of planned obsolescence. Just about every youtube video I've seen says it's the suspension rods. Nope, it's a .02 cent fix. Most people buy the suspension rods and when it doesn't fix it will throw away the washer and buy another when it still still shakes like crazy.
Is *that* how you fix it? Piece-of-shit Samsung washer we have can't even manage to run the final spin at least half the time. It stops and starts pinging at you.

What's really fun is when you get a dead iPhone or Samsung or whatever and it's a new model that has neither serial number or IMEI visible anywhere on the device or in the SIM tray. @@TheHungrySlug- I think the person is trying to tell about the shady practices of Samsung wherein they told about visiting same day and charging less but their technician is visiting next day and charging double the original amount quoted by Samsung.
That escalated beautifully. Thank you for being a constant source of information and visceral joy!
I remember back in the day Dell doing this. You have to be apart of their "tech training program" to work on their proprietary systems. They tried to make money off the training too like CompTIA. It was a bunch BS.
Keep up the great work, Louis! So glad you are calling out those that would sell our data, and other unethical practices.
Bought a Samsung gamer laptop back in 2018, no further than 2 months the power connector broke, sent to Samsung and they denied repair arguing that I broke it.
From then I've bought usual consumer stuff: Refrigerator, 3 AC units, 75" TV, a new laptop to replace that one, none of which were Samsung's.
Wasn't it more lucrative to them to fix the damn connector in the end? Anyone could tell that connector was flimsy from day 1...
I run a repair shop and can not thank you enough for what you do to defend small businesses like mine.
Not Louis kinkshaming us 🤣 Not cool, Sir!
Howdy Louis, I dont comment as much but, brother, you are my spirit animal. I, as yourself, like to repair my items, and i dont do it for money, I do it to increase the life of my item. You might have moved from NY, but you have a heart of a Texan. Caring for your neighbor and looking out for each other. Even if we are consumer, we all have to look out for each other on how BIG COMPANIES try to screw us and leave us without rights. Louis, my brother, keep up the good fight!
Hi Louis, Would love for you to hit on the topic of the Spotify Car Thing being shut down. I'm so mad that my $90 is thrown into the trash.
That was a dick move by Spotify.
"... because you have the financial incentive to do so."
And, therein, lies the crux of the problem. 100% agree with you! 🙏
2:03 Sorry, I bought the phone. What I do with it is entirely up to me. I'll put all the non-Samsung parts in there that I please, thank you.
Thank you for speaking up about this! You are the hero we need, even though many of us don't realize it yet.
This is why I moved away from Samsung and went to Sony;
At least with the Sony Xperia you still get to keep the SD card slot and earphone jack 😊
same here. Had my Sony Xperia for the last four years. Been an absolute work horse. Ive even dropped it hard several times, and its still good.
And sony actually allows bootloader unlock without any drms and they even post guides to build your own AOSP on their developer world site.
@@DimaKirivel Yeah, but the unlock process is janky at least. I had to generate a new unlock code 4 or 5 times and use 3 different versions of Flashtool to unlock my F8331 Xperia XZ. But hey, no cooldowns, no paid unlock (like Chinese region Xiaomis) and other shit.
And your cameras won't work because of DRM shit in TA partitions.
@@DimaKirivel Sony also stole digital copy's of games people payed for and will likley do so again.
@@GoblinKing117 But at least they are good with phone stuff. Just avoid their services
Thanks Louis, supporting from Australia 👍
Please tell me these agreements don't apply in EU...! These break the GDPR big time!
That's far from the only laws they break. No doubt Samsung have a little "to the extent permitted by law" cop-out clause somewhere in the nonsense, which by the way is as illegal as shrink wrap "license agreement".
You're my hero. Anyone that can sustain that level of focus and ire at the same time is someone to be admired.
I never bought Samsung for years because me and my family experienced failures of their phone screen just shy of 2 years every time.
Every time I tried to give their smartphones a chance, they were always garbage, the problems that came up as I used them are so ridiculous that I haven't seen this on even the cheapest android noname devices,
exynos is probably one of the worst soc, even with the latest snapdragon being frankly a failure, they are still better than this garbage with a mediocre modem, I don't remember any smartphone on mediatek and cheaper soc unisoc that handled signal reception as badly as exynos, and this doesn't just apply to cellular, bluetooth is also terrible and constantly falling off,
how the hell do you even screw this up ?
And these problems occur on their flagship devices,
their budgets have such terrible performance and are so overpriced compared to Chinese smartphones,
that they're only good for hammering nails,
@@SL4RKI'm very pissed by how GPS works on modern phones. My 2012 LG needed 3 seconds to find signal again. On newer phones (especially mtk) it takes like 10 to 15. It was useful to just take it off the pocket, turn gps on, see where you are and turn it off put it back.
This man is a savage! I love it! I appreciate him standing up for what's right and for informing us about these scandalous practices.
I learned to hate Samsung phones years ago. One model Samsung phone allows you to insert an SD card and then doesn't allow you to access it to store data. I am not joking.

Louis just admitted Texas is its own country. HELL YEAH!
🐐
Louis,
That was one of the best...
"Rage Against the Machine"
I've heard to date, Thanks!
Too bad the name now supports the machine.
Will you do a quick video on Spotify?
LOL, the "hot - crazy matrix". Love your passion and unabridged use of language to completely get your point across!
Damn I've never been this early, 44 seconds after release. 😂
Never change Louis, you are a beacon in the dark. Thanks for everything you've done and do.
And this is what we call "integrity". Long may you have the strength to keep fighting these practices.
Just saw this on Twitter and was going to tell you about it.
Update:
Ifixit dropped Samsung because they were apparently only allowed to sell 7 parts/month.
Thank you for all you have done, and continue to do for everyone not just your customers. The world would be such a better place......a different place if these companies conducted themselves, and their organizations the way your employees, yourself, and a few others do. I know that I can trust whatever topic you are discussing and appreciate that you not only highlight issues but also discuss solutions as well.
Apple products at least have a tendency to work. Can’t say the same of Samsung. After MANY bad experiences over a decade, I’ve not bought any of their products since 2018 or so. The one standout experience was their smart watch. Gave one to wife as a gift she had wanted. Within a few months the charging connection deteriorated. After months of them stringing out the repair without doing it, the day arrived when it was out of warranty - and the company simply ceased replying. Bottom line is Samsung is a sales company and NOT a service company. They deserve none of my hard-earned money.
Been talking about this stuff for years since you brought it to my attention. Great to see you're still on it!
Everyday I realize even more just how important it is to have YOU and your type of MINDSET in this world, now more than ever! I really appreciate everything you do and stand for, as I'm sure many do as well, but we can always use more on the team of rationality.
Louis,
don't hold back Dude.
Both barrels.
Gallons of TRUTH here.
Thanks for what you do.
We have arrived in an era when companies not giving a damn about service for their own products is actually an advantage, simply because they won't be in your damn way.
Louis, you're a blessing and too good for this god forsaken world, it feels like you're one of the only voices of reason left in this continuous process of clownification.
You are doing good work by talking about this stuff. Too many people just don't care anymore. This starts with them locking down their hardware to make it difficult to repair or modify. Maybe if these companies are so worried about users damaging the products to change a battery, for example, they should make the batteries easier to change.
