This literally couldn't be any more useful. I have the same winch, same install kit, and same spec vehicle ordered.
You're the absolute first to tackle this, and I think you hit absolutely every single issue I could think of in reading those instructions, plus a few more with the shutters and the winch. I'm not completely sure I understand the point of the shutters...
Now I know to have cables ready. A bracket ready, and potentially an extension on the free spool handle.
Thanks for doing that. I hope you know you saved a lot of people a LOT of time.
Just so you know. The controller doesn't charge at all. It's a button cell situation.
Also, the control box.. The APEX has a huge controller box, it's true, but the rough country one also has a pretty tall one (just squared off more). Thinking that there's room for the RC to fit in the space, could a new box for the APEX be made to fit? Seems like the bulk of it's size is that huge sloping clam-shell top it has to give the winch a nice streamlined look when mounted in a front facing situation.
Now I think of it more, the wireless controller button is on that same switch box. Perhaps it's doing him a favor to mount it up top in the first place.
Man you guys need to post this video on every single bronco page/forum. I was doing the install on my 23 Badlands with the Sasquatch package and those god damn intercooler fins were really frustrating me beyond what words can describe. Why they don’t know that and have disclaimers or instructions for that is annoying. Thank you guys for the video!
This is a great write up. Im glad you are pointing out all the flaws & issues as Im about to tackle this same kit on a customers 2023 WildTrax
How did it come out?
@@mariowelch1290 outside of accidently hitting a trans cooler line it was actually pretty easy. I nicked the line when was on the last little bit of cutting the frame horn off when the blade kicked off a weld.
Damn. This looks like a JOB.
It was 😬
I found your channel it's great to watch how to's on how to mod my 2021 Bronco ... Thanks for the Great Content ! Keep it up man !
Thanks, will do!
Doing God’s work here. I read through the directions a while back and knew this would be a pain. It’s always the little stuff not in the book that adds hours. Nice job!
I guess those spacer plates aren't needed anymore for the v6 and mod bumper? I wasn't sure if I would need them or not but I don't really see the point to them.
It wouldn't be any fun if it was just plug and play Bill 😜 Great job guys.
Nice work 👍 I opted for the high clearance RC winch mount for the modular bumper, but this does look super clean.
It does look good, and is hidden away pretty good, but I would much rather intal the high clearance one all day hahaha
I really do appreciate this video. I got my install going on a 2021 Outer Banks 2.7 and it's going smoothly thanks to you guys. Just to let you know I don't have the shutter on my Bronco that you guys had to remove at minute 14:00 on the video. Thanks again.
I have shutters on my 2.7 wild trak so it looks like it comes standard on the v6
I've had my eye on this for a while now, looks great. My only hesitation has been what seems to be a slight loss in approach angle due to the new skid plate hanging down a bit to make room for the winch. Could you by chance take some side profile shots of this, so I can compare it with my still stock badlands?
Would love to but that Bronco actually was sold and is no longer even in the state for me to get pictures of any more :(
What kind of cables did you guys buy for the extensions?
It was 0 gauge wire that was available at home depot.
@@EvilleTruck Why so YUGE?
@@UneducatedPhotographer Lot of amps needs big cables.
For those of us with the shutter system, at what step would you recommend that we need to remove the shutters?
Before you start with anything behind it like moving the oil cooler or the lines it will give you better clearance for doing anything in that area
Man that’s a lot of work for a kit
Does the hidden winch mount affect your ground clearance or approach angle at all?
Ground clearance no , a little bit on approach angle but not by much
How long did the hidden winch install take? The Rough Country hidden winch listing says 4-hrs, but it seemed a lot longer than that.
Did it change the approach angle, or clearance?
Will the relocated oil cooler still get as much air?
So far this seems to be the best winch solution I’ve seen. Most of the other solutions interfere with ACC, camera etc and require a 200# winch bumper - which is a lot of weight sitting out front.
4 hours maybe if you have the 2.3 engine.. it took longer than that just to relocate the cooler. Would plan for closer to 8 -10 hours and thats if you are using the recommended winch. The cooler is not air cooled it has coolant pumped through it so relocating it is not an issue, and it has plenty of space to dissipate heat.
WE did not measure approach angle but I dont think it changes much if any since it sits where the OEM bash plate normally would .
This is why i went with the exposed kit... Just too much to take apart and do with the hidden
Not being able to free spool the winch is a major pita. Hopefully he doesn't need to use it often, because it takes forever otherwise. I might have missed it, but did you wire in a winch disconnect? You don't want to leave that hooked up all the time. And if its used heavily, and it gets really hot, they can get stuck on, and then you are trying to find a wrench to disconnect the battery. There are manual disconnect switches, and Warn also makes a universal solenoid kit with a switch you can mount inside.
That winch actually comes with one to wire in.
It's a pretty complete kit. Shame the control box is so gigantic.
Getting to the lever is a real pain in the ass by hand, and it is possible to relocate the lever elsewhere with a little engineering and socket swivel to help with angles, but I just made my own handheld tool that can reach the lever from the top. Since I also removed the hood prop rod for lift struts, I had a very convenient spot that was freed up to store my tool.
@@Skinflaps_Meatslapper You completed this is a 2.7?
Wish you'd upload something, somewhere for us to read about. This really is the best way overall, and it's just not getting much coverage.
I'd personally love to hear about the way you've engineered a way to relocate the freespool switch.
I may pick up the kit if there's any black Friday deals, but as for installation. I'm still waiting on my build to be built :/
@@breaddrinker Yeah, it's a 2.7L, and I basically did everything they did in the video. It pretty much encompasses everything you'll encounter along the way except for the unending feeling of frustration the entire time...
The apex does fit in that mount without needing to flip the bolts around, you just have to install the top four bolts after you get the winch bolted to the plate. There's room for the bolts to stick out, there's just not enough for the winch to slide past them if that makes sense. I'm running the high clearance RC front bumper so I didn't have to take the bumper completely off to bolt the skid plate up. I mounted the control box between the radiator and engine so I didn't have to source longer cables, but I'm not terribly impressed with that location and might move it elsewhere in the future...the reason I put it there was so I would still have room for an ARB compressor/catch can/snorkel/etc. that need that space to fit. Disassembling the control box and only adding some insulation over exposed terminals might make it small enough to fit somewhere more out of the way.
I never did engineer a lever relocation, as the tool I made sufficed. This install burned through most of my patience and I wasn't really feeling it at the time. I may revisit the idea later on with perhaps a 90deg adapter gearbox if one will fit and a shaft running out to the bumper or fenderwell. A socket swivel on the lever and a 1/4" rod extending up in the engine bay would probably work fine too if you don't mind popping the hood every time. If I do end up tackling this though, it'll definitely be externally accessible some way or another.
The tool I made was nothing more than a 1/4" square rod that I forged a rectangular loop on the end of, and then a T-handle on the other side. To use it, you reach in with the loop and hook the lever, then all you need to do is twist to turn the lever. You don't need any kind of swivel adapter since the fit of the loop has just enough slop to allow off-angle movement on its own. I trimmed my lever down similar to how they did in order to clear the intake tube, but I trimmed it to a lower profile so I had clearance for the tool to fit between as well. The control box is kind of in the way where I mounted it and you have to work around that to get to the lever, in addition to the relocated heat exchanger right next to it, hence why I'm not entirely happy with that location.
If I figure out a better way to install the control box and engage/disengage the clutch, I'll probably post a writeup and pics on the bronco6g forum. But you'll probably have your bronco long before that happens lol
@@Skinflaps_Meatslapper Here's hoping. Appreciate the reply. Thank you!
So many questions from me.
The shutter panel you removed. It's motorized. Did you just leave the connectors dangling free?
I've seen some intercooler swap videos where people removed the shutters but leave the frame connected and electrically attached.
I'm wondering if removing it entirely triggered any error codes?
Still can't bring myself to purchase this kit. There's so many oddities. I think the worst in a warranty sense might be the removal of that intercooler shutter. While only the badlands and wildtrack has it, they seemed to think it needed it. Is it purely to keep the IC clean? I really don't get it or understand when it might be needed to not allow air to the IC when it's entirely passive on all other models with the same engine.
The shutters we removed were not the active ones on the front that you have seen others remove.
This was a passive one on the backside with no electrical connections. This is the only bronco I have seen with this on it, and have not seen it elsewhere
@@EvilleTruck Bizarre.
Just chiming in. My 21 V6 Badlands also has the shutters on the back of the intercooler.
@@whiteshark27 You mean a passive one, and you also still have the motorized one on the front?
Yeah I think I'd like to see a few more install videos with this particular piece of kit.
It's got a cloud of slight strangeness happening :D
@@breaddrinker yes. I have them on both sides as in the video.
I have some purpose built tube camps that I could swear that I got from Harbor Freight.
You're correct, HF has several types of clamps for that purpose, I actually looked at them today. Some plastic ones that I wouldn't trust, vise grips with smooth self adjusting jaws, and some made more or less from u-bolts in various sizes. I'd recommend the vise grip type.
@@Skinflaps_Meatslapper take a look at HF-65116. They were a nicer version of the u-bolt type.
@@mpeugeot Yeah, those are the u-bolt clamps I was thinking of, I didn't know what else to call them lol
I considered using those but I didn't want to buy two packs of assorted sizes just for the two big ones I needed. This will certainly bite me in the ass in the future when I need to clamp some small hose somewhere, and I'll end up buying two packs of them anyway.
this looked like a total nightmare
I think their nightmare was your future game plan, you know?
They hit just about every single problem available. The second install video for this will have that person shave 3-4 hours off the install.
How it goes I guess.
Eesh. Nice job. I'll pass on this one though...
