    (lunch break)
There's always been one tree (or stone) on any property I have owned, which has stood out as The Tree (stone).
This time, I have an ash with a stone at the base!! However, a pileated woodpecker has been removing the bark on a lot of the tree ... I fear for it (and the house if it falls!).
That said, I do have a wall plaque in honour or Frøya - lynx skull mounted with different crystals and a staverune for her - but certainly not one I'd spray blood on during a ritual. That would require a post-style outside.

This is something of great interest to me, I'm a wood carver, and I've been interested in Tiki carving so have researched much of Polynesia and Melanesia, but I'm also very interested in Ancient Cultures and Religions like Hinduism (I'm currently reading the Tibetan Book of the Dead), I've seen many pyramids in Mexico and have been to the Shanghai Museum, also the American Indian totems and gods, and far beyond our "Recorded History". One thing I've noticed is just how connected everything is through the world, through out time, it's made me question this "civilized" society we have created as something superior.

The more time that goes on, the more I realize that every faith system really just shows the various aspects of God. Like with Hinduism, all the "gods" are just aspects or avatars of the supreme God, the capital G. Each pantheon of gods highlights this distinctly.

    Thank you.
Most words are important enough to me to research.
    Their origins and etymology.
Also as dictionaries become radicalized by governments for a variety of reasons perhaps religious influence definitions change, some are removed and/or replaced.
The word "worship" comes from the Old English word weordhscipe, which means "worthiness" or "meritoriousness". Weordhscipe is made up of weorth meaning "worth, worthy" and -scipe meaning "-ship (quality, condition)
In the sense of giving, at its simplest, value to something.
The Greek word for worship is proskuneo, which is pronounced "pros-koo-neh'-o".
It means "to kneel before God" or "to kiss". In ancient Greek culture, it referred to showing devotion and reverence to God through kneeling, bowing, or drawing. Proskuneo is associated with showing profound reverence and submission to someone. Some scholars believe the word comes from the idea of a dog licking its master's hand.
So the figurine of Odin on my prayer table denotes a being, a deity that exists which I value and is worthy to be recognized.
Every morning I ask Odin to guide my thoughts and actions, to help me perhaps in a specific area and I ask for the protection of Thor also although his figure is not represented on my prayer table.
The figurine of Odin has in front of it a likeness of a Viking Longship where a candle is lit and placed in the middle of the ship.
I also placed a medallion of Hugin and Munin along with a figurine of a wolf to honor my Danish Warrior ancestors.
Behind my home in the woods I built a Sacred Grove next to a Sacred Creek to honor my ancestors as well.
    Johan

These "gnostic" or mind-spirit-attuning traditions go clear back to shamanic practices. We pick up (and generally later discard when it has served its purpose) the feather, the horn, the bone, the stone, etc, not because it IS a divine object, but because we use it to link to the World Spirit of the creature or place it came from and relates to.
These "fetishes" are more useful and necessary to focus the heart of the young and less advanced, until the communion of Spirit is an inherent part of the practitioner. It's also a way to form temporary relationships with things that are NOT in-built/invoked like our long-term allies/friends are. I do not carry a bluejay aspect normally, but for a while a jay feather may help translate its lessons or bargains without disrupting the balance of my other invocations. Ultimately, it is with the very creatures and places themselves that the magic is found. Of course, many practitioners find such items useful as theatrical props for ceremonial purposes, or to evoke wonder in the people who are less aware of the true reality. These items are also a way for their host Spirit to reach out to us, to call for our attention, and so we may carry them a while as that communication unfolds.
It's like one african shaman told researchers from Britain: "The god does not live ON the mountain. The god IS the mountain." The magic is inherent in Nature herself, in systems and kinds. Items and artifacts are a means to an end, a way to initiate a bridge among pathways, nothing more. Once a given pathworking is complete, whatever relics may have been involved are just another stone, just another bone, just another thing not worth its weight to carry. I've found this attitude is baffling to many "occult" practitioners who were surprised that I had simply discarded items that they had thought held great power.
For one who already knows the way, a map is irrelevant to navigation. The best compass is the ability to ask the right questions, and to listen for the answers that matter.

There is is a lot of wisdom here. It like I say, "Objects are not magic, people are magic." An object is just a way to have something to interact with or put intention into. That is one of the issues I see with the whole rune argument. People go back and forth on if runes were magic symbols but in reality its the person who wears the amulet or stone or whatever that puts the intention into the rune to make it have magic properties.

I see religion through the allegory of stained glass. God or the divine creation is so pure and all encompassing its hard to perceive in the same way we cannot just stare at the sun. So we create these stained glass images to organize and bring form to this light in ways we can understand and interact with. The divine shines through this stained glass and we see it through the characters and myths.

  • @Gloronthor

I think some ideas contradict each other.
Sources (and even the etymological analysis) mention that all kinds of things are worshiped, from horse phalluses to wooden idols. It is also mentioned in enough detail the incredible respect and care that was given to these idols, almost as if they were the gods in physical form (such as, for example, the procession of the idol of the goddess Nerthuz, which was also documented by Tacitus).
That said, there is no less animism in a wooden idol of a god (that comes out of a sacred tree and is placed in a sacred place) than in a sacred stone that was dedicated to a god. Holding on to one specific record when all the rest of the records say otherwise is a totally subjective assessment.

Its very easy to spot who isnt a practicing heathen and is just into history. very much like rearing Christians speak. Mind you i love what is shared on this channel and very much enjoy it.
