In my opinion Final Fantasy IX was the pinnacle of the era. The level of artistry on display was unreal. But that was who Squaresoft was. They did the same with SNES with Chrono Trigger. I truly miss those days.
That and X, with it being Nobuo Uematsu's last work on the franchise. Beautiful, amazing games! Love his soundtracks. Check out his band, Black Mages for a hard rock/ metal, style. 🎸🎹🎶
@nathank2289 I thought the same for a long time. But learning history and how people revered their forefathers, you find a crazy mix with FFX. It's fantasy, and in this fantasy, a dream of past lives was so strong it prevailed into the mortal realm of Spira, which was a problem only when the dream became the cataclysm. It's a hard story to write, and yea, it isn't perfect, but somehow, FFX emerges still an amazing awe-inspiring experience. Cheers 🍻
Me too. Rpgs just are not as immersive. All the best graphics all the new hardware and nothing has drawn me in anywhere near as well as ps1 era squaresoft
For me, Final Fantasy IX and Alone in the dark: The new nightmare were the games that marked the end of the ps1 era. The cuality of both games were insane and actualy I don't know how can made them to run those games in the ps1
IIRC Vagrant Story's textures were designed to take maximum advantage of the PS2's texture smoothing capability for PS1 games, in order to help bridge the gap between platforms.

I would like to throw in Fear Effect as a game that really pushed the PS1 to it's limits. The fmv backgrounds were such a unique aspect of the game. Four discs long and an absolute insane story. I remember being absolutely captivated by everything about the game. You guys should definitely check it out, if you haven't already. It's criminally underrated.
Man Vagrant Story has got to be one of my all time favorite games. I remember getting it around my birthday at the start of summer vacation that year, and then my family moved towns ahead of the start of high school. I spent a lot of time mastering that game over that summer, still have my copy too. I've got copies of FF9, GT2, the original Wipeout, and I actually gave away my Driver 2 not long ago. Metal Gear Solid is probably one of the greatest games ever made, so of course I have that one. Wouldn't mind getting my hands on Spyro or Jersey Devil again, played those quite a bit with my younger brother. The Tekken series was great, got all three of the originals. So my brother again, he had this deal with his teacher one year, if he did well (wasn't the best at school) he could take home Tekken 3 for the weekend, which apparently worked to get his grades up occasionally.
Apart from the great looking games you mentioned: Back then I was very fascinated by Resident Evil 2 and Tony Hawk when it comes to graphics (- but they are ATG games in general to me). Some honorable mentions: WWF Warzone back then (- I know, Smackdown seemingly even looked better, but I haven't played it yet), Alien Trilogy (- especially in comparison to other 3D FPS games of that time on the PS1 and I know, Alien Ressurection... I have never played it yet), FIFA 99, Dino Crisis (- again: I only have played the first one), G-Police, Ridge Racer Type 4.
*WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role* pushed the PS-X/PSone to it's limits. Highly detailed graphics and wrestler models, music, creation options, large roster and the Season mode with countless decisions.
Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation. No sprites being used at that point. Extensive particles. Open world non-linear with the hub system (how did the PS1 memory card track all of that with 8 blocks) meaning it tracked what you picked up, what you triggered and didn't trigger, and what enemies you killed across a max of 7 levels. Rendered in High Res 512x288. Big draw distance (See Coastal Ruins) Multiple actors running around on screen. Lara herself was rendered in 690 polygons at this point (750 polygons for Young Lara as she had two braids)
I don't know how a PS1 game like MGS could evoke such emotions and lifetime memories with those expressionless faces and blocky limbs but by god did it do just that 🤩
I don’t know, because I totally admit I was never a fan of the game when it was new, and only recently have started getting into it, but sometimes I guess a great game is much more than the sum of its parts. I’m not sure there’s any one thing about the game that necessarily explains why it’s such a phenomenal game, but as a complete package, it’s very impressive for sure.
As a kid, the anticipation for Driver 2 was insane, and I think it definitely delivered. It was mind blowing at the time, and is still probably one of my most played games of all time. The slowdown never bothered me, the chase from the trailer in Rio however drove me up the wall.
Wipeout 3 graphics are even more impressive when you realise all the data was loaded into the consoles RAM so the CD quality audio could be played from the disc while your racing! Considering there is no Fog or Popup like previous titles in the series I think that is an incredible achievement. Crisp, smooth graphics that have aged very well
Vagrant Story is such a wonderful gem! I miss these eras where games could be both experimental & unique yet still push hardware to its limits and be among the console's most technically impressive offerings. I don't know if we'll ever see its like again. But there is some good news on getting Vagrant Story on modern platforms! Yoshi-P recently said in an interview that he wants to ensure Vagrant Story and FF Tactics is available on modern platforms, as he is such a bit Matsuno fan. It would be amazing to see FFT and Vagrant Story remasters release together as a sort of Ivalice HD collection!
I'd still say FFIX is underrated and underexposed especially compared to FFVII and FFVIII, both of which hogged all the marketing spotlight and the former of which is still very much more popular than it deserves. Both FFVI and FFIX are superior in nearly every way to FFVII. FFVII just happened to be the first 3D FF, and of course it looks aesthetically like a Hot Topic exploded at a grunge concert. Also, Spyro the Dragon rocks.
VII is in no way inferior to IX except for graphics and maybe music, and saying VI is better in nearly every way is an exaggeration. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it's overrated.
I like VII. I specifically bought a PSX for VII (and got a collectible VII tshirt as part of the package to boot). I still agree with the take that VII is overrated. Not saying it isn’t a good game, just that it isn’t one of the all time greats of gaming. It is a solid entry in a great series. VI and IX are better games. The characters and story in VII are very emo and really feel like a product of the 90’s while VI and IX have a much more timeless story and characters. Cloud was so emo to the point of being only slight less bland of a protagonist than Squall. Don’t get me wrong, I 100% the game and thought it was fantastic at the time, but it was all the marketing, being the first in the series on PSX, on CD, with 3D, with FMV, with CD quality audio, etc. the production values, novelty and marketing had far more to do with its impact than the quality of the game itself. Killing off a main character wasn’t new at all, but I think the emotional impact the FMV sequences and audio production allowed, really made the idea seem new. It was also the first Final Fantasy and JRPG for a huge number of people, so that really hypes the impact of the game as well. Overall, it is akin to the first Avatar movie, which had mind blowing CGI, but was a mostly mediocre film. VII is a good game and much better than mediocre, but it merits like a 7/10 at best, not a 9 or 10/10.
@@hydepark1382 What nonsense. You are utterly clueless if you think the game is "emo" and don't get why that death was as impactful as it was, not to mention how both VIII and IX were clear steps down in several ways (albeit more so with the former, as at least the latter mostly limits its clunkiness to how sluggish battles are).
The craziest thing about Vagrant Story to me is, that it all exists in a tiny file size of about 100mb (compressed). If my emulator is to be believed 😅
A Japan only game titled Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden is a really good contender. Released in 2001, the game is a Side Story of the Alpha series, with the first Alpha game (mostly known as SRW @1) released in 2000 for the PS1. The game itself pushed the PS1 to its very limit, in my opinion. New animations, new mechas, and new enemies have been added and the animation when played is just so superb yet you can sometimes see that the PS1 is having a hard time. While there are of course reused assets from Alpha 1, the new animations from mechas such as Mazinger Z and Getter Dragon are so good that the Super Robot Wars Impact for the PS2 used the Alpha Gaiden assets. Most notably, if you look at the animation of the enemies, particularly the Bosses like Thrudgelmir and Aurgelmir, their animations are so good and so sick, the PS1's hardware limitations are showing. But still a brilliant game and definitely pushed the PS1 to its limits.

If you do a PS2 version my friends and I had problems with the God of War 2 Icarus fight. With eight different consoles and six copies of the game between us we had two PS2's that wouldn't freeze up mid fight. All game discs worked fine in the two PS2's that worked and all of the PS2's operated as normal for other games.
the weird LoK MMO? The only online LoK game I know of was Nosgoth, but I wouldn't consider it an MMO (although, I suppose that depends on your definition of an MMO). It was more like Apex Legends (or something similar) in a vampire universe. I don't even count Nosgoth as a legit game because it was never officially released. It was in beta for like a year and was cancelled before an official release. It was originally going to be the PVP multiplayer mode for Dead Sun, which was also cancelled. Denis Dyack (the original creator of LoK) and Apocalypse Studios were working on a spiritual successor to BO: LoK called Deadhaus Sonata. It was going to be a FTP MMO, but I don't know what happened with it. I haven't heard any news in a couple years.
Not sure about the MMO, but i remember the legacy of kain hero shooter thing that didnt go anywhere. NOSGOTH. I tried getting into it but it just wasnt fun unless you were playing as one of the flying vampires.

Yo did you change the character appearing in the image? I remember having seen someone else than Meryl few days ago. Then I had left the video because unfortunately I did not have that much time to watch it at the time I had clicked on it but had saved it and now I finally had enough time to watch it. I'm almost 200% sure that there was another character... OR there is a part 2 of the video which I am mistaken this with 😅 Please enlighten me
hahaha so basically we have these thing called A/B tests where YT pushes out three different thumbnails, then it tests how long people watch the video from each thumbnail and we select the one with the highest percentage Meryl won this one! the others were Raziel from Soul Reaver and Sydney from Vagrant Story
Why praise FF7 for its visuals when every subsequent FF game on the system outdid it on the technical level and not just FF9? The deliberate omission of FF8 from this conversation is unwarranted, considering it looks more or less just as good as FF9, with the only thing that gives FF9 an edge is its cartoony stylized aesthetics that aged better, but it's actually impressive how good FF8 still looks on PS1 and it's easily the most ambitious among all the FF titles on the system.

the weird LoK MMO?
(Looks at thumbnail design)
Me: don't talk to me like a rookie!
The MMO was called Nosgoth. I don't know much about it beyond that.
Urban chaos was a great game i absolutely loved it back in the day
Urban Chaos was ahead of it’a time before 3D open world became a thing in the past.
I love when you say "BAFFLING!" by the way.
The MMO was called Nosgoth. It was the Concorde of it's time.
"Wouldn't get made today?" Have you seen the games being made today? It'd fit right in.
10 more games: Apocalypse, BattleTanx: Global Assault, Destruction Derby, Future Cop: LAPD, Ghost in the Shell, G-Police, Jumping Flash, One, Shipwreckers (aka Overboard), Terracon
Also I wanna throw in Expendable and MediEvil.
Urban Chaos was the 3D GTA from the police side before GTA went 3D 👌
The MMO was Nosgoth and I still wished they released LoK Dark Sun.
Terracon. It's basically Halo for the PS1.
Time Crisis 1 was super fun but had super bad graphics, anyone else agree?
9:51 Astro Bot foreshadowing :>
Not sure about the MMO, but i remember the legacy of kain hero shooter thing that didnt go anywhere. NOSGOTH. I tried getting into it but it just wasnt fun unless you were playing as one of the flying vampires.
“One that arguably wouldn’t be made today.” Nice reference 😏
The weird MMO was called Nosgoth.
Never got to finish Parasite EVe. Disc 1 is "missing." It makes me sad.
I used to play Nosgoth all the time! It wasn't great, but it a fun few hour of nostalgia for my friends and I.
The MMO was called Nosgoth
Oh Nosgoth, my sweet child I miss you
Was called Nosgoth wasn't it? I completely forgotten about this thing but remembered the name for some reason.
12:10 Having fond Memories and Nightmares here! Never Could Finnish President's Run! I still Remember My car Getting Knocked trough Buildings Over Buildings and In General Into Outterspace! :_(
We need more Vagrant Story.
Ivalice Alliance forever.
Alien Resurrection, Quake 2, Dino Crisis, RR Type 4 with RR 60 FPS Demo, Ace Combat 3 and Bloody Roar 2 is a beast, literally
Wasn't the LoK MMO called Nosgoth?
#4 I thought I was one of the few that saw the GTO Twin Turbo as the best car in there.
While FF8 is my favorite ps1 game of all time. Parasite Eve 2 was a ps1 game that looked like it was a ps2 game. How was that not on the list
Parasite Eve has already been in about 10 lists!
parasite eve 2 is a prerendered background game nothing new, like Re1-2-3,Dino crisis 2,Alone in the dark new nightmare, just 3d photos in the background
@@gllmll7227 never played AitD but the rest of that list didn't look as good as PE2
That moving border is REALLY distracting to watch on a big screen.
Nosgoth was the name of the Legacy of Cain MMO.
I miss Ridge Racer Type 4 on the list
This video should only be about Urban Chaos. All your videos should just be about Urban Chaos.
OR there is a part 2 of the video which I am mistaken this with 😅 Please enlighten me
hahaha so basically we have these thing called A/B tests where YT pushes out three different thumbnails, then it tests how long people watch the video from each thumbnail and we select the one with the highest percentage
Meryl won this one! the others were Raziel from Soul Reaver and Sydney from Vagrant Story
@CulturedVultures so there WAS someone else 😅 Thanks I thought I was facing another case of lost media
Been in this channel for ages btw! I truly love the content so... About time I said it 😅
great to have you here! you've got loads more stuff to look forward to this month! 🤠
tekken tag 1 graphics was insane for that time cgi level charcater models . waiting for a ps2 version
Something has changed since then. 😢
This channel is like the British version of GameRanx lol
What about long forgotten GALERIANS
We will never forget Galerians, been in a few vids!
? FF9 is the game being praised, not 7
The MMO was Nosgoth
Where is Tobal 2? It's the best looking fighter game that the console has.
PS1 RPGs Pushed The Console To Breaking Point
I would have picked soul edge over tekken 3. Much more impressive IMO
the mmo called nosgoth
Final Fantasy 9
No Omega boost ??!! I do not accept this list.
MMO: Nosgoth
Nosgoth. and it wasn't an MMO. it was a MOBA
Dino Crisis 2. That is all.
that is just game with prerendered backgrounds
