Aaaah, Rufus you own my heart. I simply love your version of this song. So soulful and such a strong, clear voice. And you are so hugely talented - as a performer, a songwriter, a singer. This song is sublime and so is Rufus singing it.
this song is beautiful. The other day my uncle invited me to go to one of his voice lessons with him. Near the end of the lesson he sat down at the piano. He started playing this song. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard. It wasn't incredibly well sung but he put all his emotion into it and and one point he was just banging on that piano. I cry just thinking about it. I can't believe anyone can dislike a song with this much meaning.
I, too , have listened to at least a dozen artists sing this and Rufus' rendition is the best, by far, IMHO. He has a wonderful voice and I love his piano playing. Take a look at his live performance of this on an Irish tv show - sublime.
By hearing this song so many pictures come to my mind. Soldiers fighting, children crying, reverends praying. Makes my think of sadness, despair, but also hope and the will to go on. Strange spread of feelings and one of the best songs.
Beautifully written...beautifully covered..Leonard cohen has a magical pen...and Rufus Wainwright can sprinkle emotion into words like no other..LOVE it
Leonard Cohen wrote beautiful lyrics, but Rufus really performed this perfectly. You can feel the raw emotion of the song as it was meant to be heard. Kudos to you Rufus.
Of all the versions of this song, I must say that I enjoy Wainwright's version most, and I think that this is one of the songs that really made me want to play piano.
I'm a fan of Rufus Wainwright but he in no way reached the emotional depth that Jeff Buckley did with this song. It's one thing for it to be sung beautifully, it's another thing for it to rock you to your very core. Salute to Leonard Cohen for writing the most inspiring lyrics I have ever heard and my love to Buckley for bringing them to life.
when you begin an argument about god it will not end until both sides die. God is a universal term, not just a human figure but a symbol of hope, the looking past evil to see the greater good, God is the BELIEF in something greater than yourself.
Everyone's saying that Alexandra's version of this song is rubbish, but I think it was outstandingly good!! The ochapello moments were just overwhelming!!
@hunka007 Thank you for the post. I had not heard about Kate. I've always loved the McGarrigle Sisters and was so delighted when Rufus came into my view.
Whether God's real or not, surely believing in him and following the Bible makes more morally correct and generally better human beings, so fake or not, i believe it because it helps to shape you as a good person.
I love this song so much. I liked it so much that after listening to it 4 times in a row, I was like "I'm going to favorite this.." Then realized I already had it favorited. =D
very upsetting song my grandma died 2010 ironic my dad rang to tell me when scrubs was on and this song was playing and today my fiances grandma has died in hospital and this song came to my head
I think that this is the best version of the song - the right combination of pace and emotion. The others tend to feel a little drab. Of course, this is the first version I heard so that may be why.
