Same, especially two contrasting colors like blue and red, or red and green, even though I never experienced the 80s, it is just the picture in my head of a neon cyberpunky store
The scary thing about Neon light liminal’s is that with normal lighted ones, it’s confusing because why are the lights on, yet no one is around. Here it’s amplified because 1. Neon lights are harder to keep running, so it conveys that people quickly left within a short period of time, which is creepy and 2. Neon lights feel strange, because they look different and abnormal because of their colors, so it looks creepier With the one with the unidentifiable object and sun, this is amplified because it’s dark, only being lit by strange signs, giving a large sense of terror.
Abandoned stores and malls keep their power running to discourage copper wire thieves. No one is going to try to rip out live power cables and risk getting electrocuted.

One that really sticks with me is the purple one. It leads your eyes into the dark center of the image but there is seemingly nothing to see. The first memories that came to mind was grungy streets with a neon sign belonging to the buildings, most of them being drug or liquor stores. I grew up in not the cleanest city and had a complicated experience of seeing my parents. A lot of my early memories with especially my mother are filled with those kinds of places (as her “friends” normally lived in worse places. I think it’s odd though that it’s what I first thought about seeing as how most liminal spaces are inclosed but those are city streets out in the open. But if you’ve ever been in a place like that you know they usually don’t feel like that; you have to be careful wear you step and keep your distance. It makes you a little anxious and tunnel visioned, making the world feel smaller. And (in the day) they’re usually abandoned and most of the people you’d see are people you’d rather not. Idk, I guess I’m just sharing some more childhood trauma on the internet. I’m not trying to villainize rural areas or the people that live there, as a person who grew up aware of these people and there situations I understand that a lot of them simply just weren’t as fortunate as I and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s just an intimidating place to be in as a child.

At 2:10 I think that’s a regal movie theater, from the crown on the wall idk if it’s only in Georgia though as at 4:07 that is a theater from the red digital clock like text telling what movie is on, also the letters on the wall on the left I can’t tell what they are but it means it’s either 3D or higher quality. Great video!
these are probably my favorite type of liminal spaces. the 1980’s vibe goes really well with an empty mall space for some reason lol. great video as usual ^-^
4:10 looks like the hallways at a movie theater to me. like the dark ass hallways you have to walk through before you enter the room that has your movie playing. its quite literally a transitional space
1:56 and 2:38 gave me a weird reaction. Usually liminal space images make me feel freaked out or disturbed, but these two made me feel the complete opposite. I felt comforted and happy. In fact, I felt like these images actively lifted my mood. I started smiling. I think these images remind me of being a kid and exploring malls and arcades and movie theaters. I have an extreme fear of the dark, but as a kid I feel like I’d be so excited to walk around in that second image. I’d feel like an adult in an action movie. And that first image doesn’t disturb me because, despite the colors, it looks like some place I could go to even today. Just hang out with some friends there as a bunch of strangers buy popcorn.

liminal space sometimes reminds me of being a kid at a wedding and getting lost in an empty corridor looking for your parents or the bathroom, you hear music and laughter, but nobody’s there
Dude at 2:00 fucking on point with the "for some people this unlocks a memory" deadass gasped after you said that lol. Another aspect of the neon light liminal images seems to almost be a visualization of consciousness to the sub or unconsciousness. Like the store fronts in the mall. They're empty, but it feels like someone will be back sooner or later. Like seeing the face of a sleeping person. They're not dead. But it seems off to see them as such.
I like finding the little details in this video like the parts where you show some of the Liminal Spaces people submitted from the Streams. You really broke those images down pretty swell.
That bowling alley carpet in these images is very nostalgic for me, as they mostly remind me of my teen years in the early 2010s and me and my friends would go to a handful of late night arcades that would have those carpet designs still
@@Shookey Yeah they were good times. One of the arcades went into disrepair and then got refurbished. Just wasn't the same, they got rid of the carpet and lighting, just felt lifeless by comparison. Then it went into disrepair again after covid. So things haven't been great for that place sadly
i also really like the one at 03:18, because as you said, you can just keep looking at it and still find new things or odd aspects. I also like it because often liminal spaces are pretty empty with not a lot of objects but this one feels interesting because the foreground is nearly empty but behind the windows its suddenly much more full. on top of that i feel like both stores have liminal space potential themselves, so i see three liminal spaces in this one image also, creature feature vibes :)
The image that Shookey couldn’t get at about 4:10 is at a regal cinema and I know that because the theater right down the street from my house looks just like that before you go into one of the theaters, so yes, you were right about it being a movie theater Shookey.

The image at 4:14 is in a movie theater, as you can see the red text that displays the movies playing in that room and the room on the lest is the special one with the haptic feedback, similar to the 4DX theaters.
A thought that I have that may fit this if framed properly is the Wabash Lights, an installation of neon lights that were attached to the underside of the El in Chicago, Illinois as an art piece. The fun part is that you can use your phone to change the colors of the lights.
Ahhh! I've been waiting you to introduce this genre of liminal space! I love your great works!! Thank you for your great explanation!! I love backgrounds roblox maps too... I can't help but think neon lights are underrated when it comes to liminal spaces. I think they work quite well due to the fact there's a lot of common places such as cinemas, malls and arcades which are familiar to most people. I do quite like it when neon lights are depicted in a darker picture though, as it draws more attention to them.
True true true. They are a lot more common then one would realize. I'd have to agree with you as well on the dark lighting photos as well. It's great when you're drawn to them
The image around the 4 minute mark reminds me of a hallway leading to the actual theatres of a movie theatre. I've seen a similarly illuminated theatre in the middle east, though with LED lights instead of a neon set to guide people to the actual theatres in the dark.
1:48 This seems like it's from a movie theater. That said, I think that the dismal/depressing thing about neon lights is that they're so artificial and stale - similar to the environment of office buildings. Compare this with warm, bright sunshine: there's something very stale and artificial about neon lights. Anyway, all in all very well done on your videos and please keep up the good work!
I HAVE A SUGGESTION AHHHH sorry for yelling. I just recommend doing videos about liminal pictures related to Chernobyl and stories about that. There are two steam games that i think will be particularly interesting for you. The one about the three men that went inside the reactors to drain the facility using valves and the one about the firemen that were the first responders to the explosion: the liquidator simulator.
That actually would be a very interesting topic. If I gather the research, I definitely want to cover this. I feel like I could make it respectful and informative
At 3:46 I took a screenshot shot so I could turn up the contrast and stuff to see what that thing on the floor is, it just looks like a hoodie but you’ll notice that when you turn the contrast and stuff up and you look in the store with the green light on you can see a figure. When I saw it I saw a hand and a black shirt or hoodie. Could just be a mannequin or a worker at that store but it’s pretty creepy to me. The figure is on the left of the store in that doorway
2:54 oh my god, this reminds me of those times I went to a part of new york city(not saying which area, for privacy) for the dentist when I was 3, we would stop by this big skyscraper with nepn lights to eat. I am guessing the image is nostalgic because there is this one room in the building that has neon lights right smack next to a elevator door
It's because "Liminal" does NOT mean "Horror". While they may overlap cause liminal spaces can cause a sense of unease and fear like horro images, what the difference is is that liminal is also usually nostalgic and a weird COMBO of "unease" and "comfort". It's a place you remember fondly, but are afraid to go back to. It's a place you're not supposed to be, in the context of the photo, but is a place you used to be when it was full of people and those memories are fond or at least, not negative. So bright, warm, or vibrant colors can absolutely belong in a liminal space.

Another reason why I think the purple neon lights image looks off is because it seems like it's in some corporate office hallway- an unusual place to have neon lights.
The first image is the now demolished White Flint Mall's food court in Bethesda, Maryland. The second photo is from a movie theater, specifically the Regal Citrus Park, at the Citrus Park Town Center Mall in Florida. I don't know about the third one. The fourth one appears to be neon art at Chicago O'Hare airport. The fifth one with the purple neon is the Washington Square Mall in Evansville, Indiana. The sixth location I can not determine. The seventh location could be any Regal RPX theater.
2:12 i swear ive been here everytime i went to the movies, i perfectly remember the crown and those arcade games off in the corner. I don’t remember where it is or what its called because covid n all but ik ive been here
@@Shookey For me and my friends, the 80s and 90s were a great time. But, I guess it's all subjective. Though I can't imagine it, younger folks like yourself might one day look back at 2024 and think it was a great period of time. Anyway, this was a cool video.
Hey Shookey, I just thought of the best liminal space ever. It would be part of the backrooms. I don't know how you would get to it, but this is just an idea at the moment. So anyways, it would be a huge, old fashioned theater with big old musty red curtains hanging super high up from the massive old wood stage that you would emerge onto. There would be gold and red theater seats fading super far out into the creepy darkness, and make you feel like you are not along. Then there would be these weird areas that I don't really know how to describe, because I saw them in a dream, but I will take my best shot at explaining them: They would be like these big sections cut out into the slope of all those musty seats, and they would have what seems to be reserved seats in them for celebrities and VIPs that will never come. They would have these big tan curtains falling wayyyyy down from the incredibly tall ceiling behind, that would look like sort of a back wall, but too detailed and dirty to take in, like trying to make things out during a seizure. In the middle of those there would be a part in the curtains that would lead into the endless flow of lavish seats and whatnot. Anyways, you would have to wander thru those endless, old, musty seats and eventually find an old rusty door that would lead you to the next level. Also, the place would smell like old fabric and rot, and would be not echoey at all, making you feel small and trapped, although it is a big space. So yeah, thats my idea of a perfect liminal space. This chapter book I just typed is just the tip of the iceberg, and I could show what I'm thinking much better thru a drawing or a digital rendering. I hope u see this!
Very very interesting an creative! Have you ever considered trying to recreate this Liminal Space idea in ROBLOX? I noticed that you have it as your profile picture and it could be an easy way to recreate it, as well as a fun project! Not only that, you could incorporate parts of your book into the ROBLOX game, or vice versa! Include pictures from the ROBLOX game into your book!
@@Shookey Yeah I've thought of doing it in roblox but my computer aint that good so my main way to make liminal spaces is thru drawing (im a decent sketch artist) and minecraft
I think I like the 2:17 one the most actually, but I was looking at it on a darker screen at first. The colors didn’t look so bright, like 3/4 of the image felt like it was being dominated by a sickly green from the ceiling and reflective doors. The more yellow colors in the background feel kinda calming, and I’m drawn to it: first from the pillar in the center that leads to the ceiling which then stretches back into the background. But the yellow colors also feel so far away. I just get a kinda uncomfortable, anxious feeling from that picture, like I don’t feel quite right and want to move somewhere else. The two pics after I felt more scared, with one being I like I’m staring into the abyss and the other just feel like a place I definitely shouldn’t be.
I have a recommendation for a video: radio towers. The one picture that I have in mind isn't a radio tower picture, but I find all liminal space pictures with radio towers in them to be interesting. Also, about the picture that I'm most interested in. I really want to find out where it is located. I'm just gonna describe it: it's in a desert and it looks like it was taken very early in the morning. The towers in the picture are white with red lights. All of my favorite radio tower pictures can be found on my Pinterest @Cyphisonia in the "Towers" board. Also sorry some of them aren't really liminal space pictures.
Fun Fact: the photo with the purple neon lights was actually taken at the Washington Square Mall. It’s home to another popular liminal space image that I think you already covered in the liminal space mall video. Edit: i hate doing edits on this old of comments but the first image is actually in the White Flint Mall in Bethesda, Maryland and the second image is in the Regal Citrus Park Movie Theater in Tampa, Florida. I actually plan on visiting the second image on my trip to Florida :)
Anytime I see neon lights the first thing I think is the 80's.

Reminds me a little of the new FNAF game that’s coming out. Bright neon lights in a retro, fun environment.. but still so lonely, and dark.
New FNaF game? I'm gonna have to check that out!
Another reason why I think the purple neon lights image looks off is because it seems like it's in some corporate office hallway- an unusual place to have neon lights.
True! I totally see that with how the walls and floor are designed
this channel is really noice im going too start watching more
Thank you Michael :)
Well there you have it ladies and gentlemen. The comprehensive list by the legend themselves
The neon rooms also happy 5000 subs
Thank you :D :D
These neon light malls feels like the star court mall in stranger things season 3
What a spooky ass intro
2:12 i swear ive been here everytime i went to the movies, i perfectly remember the crown and those arcade games off in the corner. I don’t remember where it is or what its called because covid n all but ik ive been here
@Lord Inquisitor Shadowlord yeah i just remembered and damn the nostalgia
There's still one in my town but it's been HEAVILY remodeled and does not look as fun or cool as the originals. Product of the early 2000's I suppose
Spotted my image, life complete.
Ya made it in the cut
Ooh this seems cool!,
Thanks Annie
I’m pretty sure the image at 2:37 is actually from the Washington Square mall, a place where another famous Liminal Space image was taken.
I like the closed mall One and I think and the unidentifiable object maybe a palm tree or something
I have been trying to find out where that is. To me the object looks like a jacket or other piece of clothing
Neon lights are so intresting
Agreed
What exactly do you mean when you describe it as liminal? I watched several of your videos great work :)
My mans got a whole fucking channel dedicated to liminal spaces
better than *insert popular but hated game here* ✌️
This makes me miss the 80s and 90s even more than usual.
Who knows what it was like back then. Not me! I wasn't alive 😧
@@Shookey For me and my friends, the 80s and 90s were a great time. But, I guess it's all subjective. Though I can't imagine it, younger folks like yourself might one day look back at 2024 and think it was a great period of time. Anyway, this was a cool video.
@@karlhungus5554 Bahaha, most certainly! Who knows what the future holds! Thank you for your perspective 😊
2:50, Thats washington square mall lol
Also to picture this more clearly, think of the theaters in the muppets movies!
@@Shookey and by chapter book i meant that freakin long paragraph i had typed
This video needs more likes
Thank you haha :D
these videos are awesome! keep them going :)
👍🙏
Also as another commenter suggested- you should check out the game Superliminal. It's AWESOME (not just liminal spaces, but optical illusions)
Definitely gonna cover it sometime, if not cover it, then I'll stream it :D
I live the Neon Lighting Because It reminds me of the 80's and 90's
Very true
1:59 The location of this movie place is some where in a place in California called lake Elsinore
All I know for certain is that it's a Regal Cinema's theatre
@@Shookey yeah
aaaaaaaaaa............ IS THAT CLAIRE'S-
Neon is cool.
I agree, also, did you see you're in this video?
@@Shookey yes
no short!?!?!? epic
Better this way, no?
@@Shookey yes I just like seeing full videos
i feel like liminal images could possibly be purgatory. like you don't know you're dead.
You could say it affects you Liminally then maybe? Maybe some elements in it are possibly nostalgic for you
Congrats on the 5000 likes!
Thank you :D
I remember being there in my dream
I suggested this! Thanks a bunch
Of course! Thank you for watching!!
Gj on getting 5,000 subscribers
Thank you!
Yeah that sounds really interesting! I certainly wanna cover it sometime in the future. I'll save your Pinterest board for now just in case :)
4:02 that’s a theater bro
They give off a a 80s vibe witch is kinda of creepy
Agreed, especially the pink and blue lights imo
@@Shookey yeah
I Love Neon Light
They make me happy
Love your vids
Fun Fact: the photo with the purple neon lights was actually taken at the Washington Square Mall. It’s home to another popular liminal space image that I think you already covered in the liminal space mall video.
Edit: i hate doing edits on this old of comments but the first image is actually in the White Flint Mall in Bethesda, Maryland and the second image is in the Regal Citrus Park Movie Theater in Tampa, Florida. I actually plan on visiting the second image on my trip to Florida :)
indeed
Its just the reason of why the crap is there no one there its kinda creepy and actually really cool
agree its cool
Hey you should do a vid about old bedroom liminal spaces
Ooo, that's a good idea too
cyberpunk be like: neon in the neon with extra neon
and security breach will be painful
Painful on the eyes!
Interesting video! U should check out liminal spaces around the world and Compare them to each other
Ooh, good idea, I believe you've mentioned it before as well. If I get some images collected I definitely will.
