Being a Ex TM2 I was on edge watching that back hall operation even as I noticed the inaccuracies. Crews can be very hard on this kind of screw up but the Capt pushing the TM to redeem himself was the right thing to do.
My Brother Gary Wayne Canupp served in the Submarine Service for 22years. He passed away in 2010 just weeks before my Father who was a WWll Army Veteran.
I know each episode concludes with the patting on the back of the officers and the men. I can you think of any better way to include each episode? They deserve appreciation especially being part of the greatest generation.
thats a pretty big error, the mk 14 torp needs to travel 500 yds in open water to arm, it has a paddle wheel inside that the water rotates as it moves forward to arm itself, also it can't be disarmed with a tongue depressor, the detonator mechanism doesn't work that way. i was in the navy in the early 70's and we had mk 14 fish on our ship, many of them had been on war patrols and not used. i was formally trained on the mk 14 at torpedo man school in orlando fl.
Actually you are only half right. In 1951 my father had to disarm mk14 torpedo that was beached with a tongue depressor. In 1955 all remaining MK 14s had a different detonator. My dad was a UDT man and said that tongue depressor was better than a hammer...jokingly.
We used to boresight our tank's main gun pretty much the same way the Thresher boresighted theirs. There's a more expedient way to do it, but maybe they didn't want to show that to the general public. I also wonder how the binoculars held on tightly enough to stay in position after each firing. Whatever they did, it worked.
I've recently read that the US Navy didn't want big deck guns after the first few subs had been given 6" and 5" guns for feat that a sub would be tempted to stay on the surface and engage in a shoot-out that they couldn't win... Sounds like they didn't trust their own Skippers!!!
I think the script was miss-leading. I am sure the actual crew knew why it was not sinking. The gun probably was not doing the damage needed to disable the ship beyond recovery. This could have been contributed to the guns accuracy as well as penetrating/explosive power of the rounds.
GOOD POINT...THIS CAPTAIN MILLIGAN GOT HIT IN THE HEAD TOO MANY TIMES PLAYING FOOTBALL...IF THE TORPEDO ARMS ITSELF AFTER 500 YARDS WHY DOES HE PULL IT BACK ON BOARD INSTEAD OF FIRING AGAIN WITH THE DOORS OPEN!
Just think if the war might of been shorter if the torpedoes worked in 1942 and the first half of 1943 properly. The Japanese would of lost a lot of ships during that period. By the end of 1944 the Japanese were having trouble with lack of fuel for the ships. How much worse would it of been if the torpedoes worked.
surprised they hadn't stopped at Harbor Freight to get a 'come-along'... would have been much simpler then all those men on the line. In all seriousness though, the guy who screwed up and put the ship and crew in danger, would in the future, be the least likely to screw up again.
The narrator says the gun is a 3", but the video shows a 5" 25 cal. clearly shooting at 4:56, and probably before, and after also 5". The Thesher (SS-200) did only have a 3" 50 cal.
I noticed that the submariner seen at about the 7 minute mark was wearing a shirt with buttons that very obviously measure about 9/17ths of an inch wide but the actual uniform shirt authorized for a submariner of his rating utilized buttons measuring only 8/17ths of an inch wide.
Aground means more than just resting on the bottom of the sea. In this case, it was hung up (aground) on a reef. Flooding it with holes at the waterline caused it to slip off into the depths.
Opening scene of that sub coming out of the water - Surely that's far from normal. I mean it must be hell inside. Is there a purpose to it? I'm guessing some emergency drill of some kind.
Brave men armed. Women may have done the same. I am doubtful of such abilities. Maybe it’s because women weren’t trained as the men were. I don’t know.
Frank Gorshwin has the perfect..."i am a screwup face"..the "Riddler"!
I used to watch this series way back when. It was good then and still is.
It's great to see such presentations about a bygone era when this nation had a much more promising future.
It is 8 years later and America is sunk with Biden as leader :(

I would have more faith in your country if I were you two. 🙏☘️
A 5 inch 54 is nothing laugh about !!! I big jump from a 3 inch !!
Today is 6/10/24. I wonder what your opinion is now?
Riddle me this:
how many shells are required to sink a small boat ? 70, or 80 ?
Holy ship, Batman ! 😅
A Sub is not square
it is long and round
80 shots won't sink squat
when a ship is aground

Thanks for sharing, most interesting. And Frank Gorshin in an early role!
Later The Riddler on Batman. Was also a pretty good impressionist.

I remember watching this show in the 50's. Whew! Longtime ago.
Poppy's Pix I do, too.
Ya sold me hook, line and sinker! Love these videos! Thank you so mich

Frank Gorshin was cast as the Riddler on Batman 10 years later
Thresher in two episodes: Season 1 Ep 3 is also about the USS Thresher, "End of the Line" . Same old Torpedo and gunnery officer comes on at the end .
I don’t know why they would be bummed to have a 5/51 they were well known to be lethally accurate
This episode should've been made into a movie.
My dad was a morterman in a heavy weapons company and he told me about getting a dud round out of a morter, this remindeded me of that
Mortar
Frank Gorshin, aka The Riddler, is the guy who fouled up.
Frank Gorshin would go on to be a villain after being rejected by the Navy.
I Thot that was him,Great impersonator...
packingten He was the riddler on Batman.....yes he was a good impersonator.

TxCow It was beached with a tongue depressor? That's amazing.
@@davea8346 Yes, the torpedo had it in its month saying, wait a minute Jim, I only a Doctor!
I don't think anyone really cares. It's a show for entertainment, not always factual. It's tough be a pedantic.

best of all time
Respect The Holy Name Of God!
I was 13 when this happened. Remember it like it was yesterday.
me too, same age
Thought it was the nuclear sub "Thresher" when I looked at the title.
Scott Richardson I thought that too until it started. There seems to be another show on this same sub in this series.
Me too. I work in a shipyard that builds submarines, and to us the 1963 Thresher is a huge deal.
Its the "Riddler".

The good old days, when men were men and women liked that way.
WOW THE MAN THAT DIVED OVER TO CHECK THE TORPEDO,-THE DISARMED IT !!--WOW,-I HOPE HE GOT THE "NAVY-CROSS"--"WHERE UNCOMMON BRAVERY WAS COMMON !"
Doesn't the crew understand what "aground" means? Grounded ships won't sink no matter how many gun rounds or torpedoes you put into them.
I think the script was miss-leading. I am sure the actual crew knew why it was not sinking. The gun probably was not doing the damage needed to disable the ship beyond recovery. This could have been contributed to the guns accuracy as well as penetrating/explosive power of the rounds.
With reefs the front end can be aground with 1000’ of water under the stern.

All the Threshers must have been cursed. This one and the one lost off Cape Cod
This is or was a great program.
Trying to sink a ship that's run aground?
Okay.....

The clips were not always from the boat whose story is being told. They used a lot of stock footage. Picky. Picky. Picky.

stinker43 it originally had a 3” and later upgraded to the 5”. Albeit a relic.
Another Batman alumni this time the Riddler.
Did the binoculars stay on the gun when it submerged
Robert stack.Yes,I noticed that, still hung on the deck.
anyone else think that a ship sitting on a reef cannot sink ?
at 6:45 - riddle me this, batman, is that frank gorshin ?
Aground means more than just resting on the bottom of the sea. In this case, it was hung up (aground) on a reef. Flooding it with holes at the waterline caused it to slip off into the depths.
And modern people think that Vlogging is a new thing.
Thanks
A very young Frank Gorshin!
Hey the original Batman “Riddler” Frank Gorshin.
Jesus Loves You
Opening scene of that sub coming out of the water - Surely that's far from normal. I mean it must be hell inside. Is there a purpose to it? I'm guessing some emergency drill of some kind.
it's the Riddler!
Riddle me this captain how many shells to sink a ship
Ahh! Of course - the 3" gun is limited! Took a lot of shooting.
Da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da
Batman! er Riddler!
torpedos are not armed untill they travel a certain distance after launching. One can't be armed in the tube,
No it is the ridler
Hey is that the joker????
😊😊
So why was a lieutenant disarming the torpedo when torpedo men are trained at that? Is that just Hollywood?
This isn't easy. Torpedoes could be temperamental.
anyone else think that a ship that is grounded cannot sink ?
Only if it's grounded along the whole length of the hull.
Sure it can. But after being grounded, it has only 5 minutes to get to its bedroom!
@@nonyadamnbusiness9887 That is more likely to hang-up but it still could sink.
the Capt. of the Thresher was a hot dog. who use to ram russian subs from underneath.
Joseph DuPont wrong Thrasher , troll
Damn it Jim, I'm only a Doctor! Not a historian!
No. Thanks for the info, both of you. I hadn't known either of those facts.

those last of thoise comments ,.
excitement of combat ....?
more like the need the need to LIVE !
THE SHIP COULD NOT BE SUNK BECOUSE IT SAT ON A REEF.
Frank Friggin Gorshen!
They couldn't have gotten it more wrong
Riddle me this, Mr. Larkin.
Only an ex-Nazi would down vote these videos
Whoever made these films knew Jack Shit about the subs and equipment.
Well duhh, it wouldn't sink because it was "aground". On the reef. Sorry, but I don't get that part of the presentation.
Brave men armed. Women may have done the same. I am doubtful of such abilities. Maybe it’s because women weren’t trained as the men were. I don’t know.
Were they on Crack? how did they expect to sink it with their Gun even if it was a 5 inch, it was AGROUND !
Riddle me this Batman
Firing on a ship that's run aground is basically murder.
The last Tresher went down because of a faulty torpedo.
Lame.
Yes, Cory. I agree you are lame, but why tell everyone here?
