I am so glad that Burton expressed so well his admiration and appreciation of the work of this incredibly talented and wonderful man. Harryhausen has touched so many of us. He has fired up the imagination of so many of us, growing up in the 60's and 70's.

I'm just going to echo a few other comments and say that I don't think I have ever seen Tim Burton so animated in discussing....anything! I realise he's not exactly known for being verbally articulate, but I personally think it was an interview with real flow as Burton so obviously adores Harryhausen's work and Harryhausen seems pleased to talk to someone who is so genuinely enthusiastic.

I was so very lucky to have met Ray at a science fiction convention in the late 80's; out in the hall where he was waiting for his handlers to take him to dinner. We spent almost twenty minutes chatting about illustration; just two artists sharing their passion for the craft. It didn't matter to him where you were at that moment in time, just that you were doing something interesting with your own talent.

There are many documentaries which show some of the greatest Sci-Fi & fantasy filmmakers talk about Ray with such enthusiasm. His special FX creations were the fantastic adventures of our childhoods, brought to life in a way that CGI could never accomplish.

Ray showed me my first monsters and special fx. I spent untold hours in front of a b/w television in the middle of the night devouring old movies as a kid. He sparked my interest in creating images that can not exist in the real world, that are birthed in my mind and demand a release so that I can enlighten, beautify, or torture those around me. Tim Burton has a unique dark and twisted vision I also enjoy. He is a great talent to be reckoned with in our age of pablum entertainment, money chasing and BS celebrity worship.

Their discussion about what young viewers could handle struck a chord with me. As a kid I was scared of nearly everything that wasn't Disney, Bluth, or Henson. And yet while watching all of the old movies Harryhausen worked on, I wasn't scared either but rather thrilled. The Medusa scene from Clash of the Titans was especially tense but in a fun way.

I wasn't going to bother signing in until I read mxylpx's comment, I had to agree, with more than a thumbs up,...maybe that is why Tim needs to express himself with animation,...not exactly eloquent or spontaneously articulate, Bob Costas could have pulled this off without any research, I don't watch any sports on TV at all,...that's how good Bob is, but this is not about Bob. Even before I knew who Ray Harryhausen was, or what stop action was, in my memory banks, were stored my favorite parts of all of the movies that I had seen, I later learned that one man was responsible, I learned what stop action was and how animation worked long before I knew about Ray, and he was, and is great, still.

Just a note that for all the crap CG takes (and it deserves some of it) when it's done right there's nothing better. And before motion capture some 3D characters were animated by hand using a stop motion style model that sent signals into the computer for the animator then they were touched up. I'm a huge fan of stop motion. Played around with it in the 80s. Some of Ray's films are my favs...
