Hi there. One of the things I was saying in this episode was that I'm working on a video series in English (and German) ;-) that combines footage from the hermitage (its restoration from 2016 onwards, life, current building projects such as a walipini and hikes in the surrounding alps) with some thoughts on the "good life" towards the end of each episode. I hope I end up with about 24 episodes with a story arc both with respect to coming full circle winter to winter but also with the reflections. I had promised something like that some 15 months ago when Kirstin Dirksen put up her video but last year I did another long pilgrimage (walking some 4000 miles with detours from Ireland to Italy following the journey of St. Columban and his band of Irish monks AD 590 to 610) and thus was gone for half the year. 2023 is the year of filming. But since I dread the pressure of weekly videos that I cannot pre-record, I have decided to record most of the year first and then edit and release, so youtube will not take over one year of my life. Ich freue mich auf so viele und vor allem anspruchsvolle Inhalte - es ist wunderbar, wie Sie auf dem häufig nur dem Konsum dienenden RUclips mit Ihren Inhalten zum Mitdenken anregen. Auch wer mit Religion nicht viel anfangen kann, lernt bei Ihnen zumindest, wie tief verwurzelt die christliche Religion und die Kirchen in unserer Kultur und Gesellschaft sind, und ein Aufgeben der Religion letztlich bedeutet, unsere eigenständige Kultur aufzugeben. Und ja, sehr oft verstehen es die Kirchen nicht, und manchmal sind sie Teil des Problems. Aber um dies zu verstehen, gilt es, selber nachzudenken, wozu Sie hervorragend anregen.

So umfassend und genial die letzten Videos waren( von denen ich selbst zugegebenermaßen, auch wirklich nicht alles verstanden habe )....im Sinne des - Menschen fischen - , wären etwas zugänglichere Videos wieder stark von Vorteil :-) Die Themen die kommen, versprechen ja schon viel. Irgendwann würde ich mich wirklich auch über eine Meinung/Videos von Pater Johannes zu sehr presänten Themen wie - Nahtoderfahrungen ( Einklang mit Glauben oder gar Beleg für eine Seele!?) Sowie aber auch über die Serie - The Chosen, freuen. Die Serie hat es ja zumindest geschafft, Jesus bei jungen Leute wieder ins Gespräch zu bringen, so sehr wie lange nichts mehr. VG
Sorry in advance for a lengthy comment. I hope I don't bother you with it. While finding Martijn's videos as a distractirom from being miserable and then through that stumbling upon you I am asking myself "Is this what I was asking for?" Because I did actually try to talk to God recently. I've been feeling bad for what unfortunatly has become years rather than 'just some time'. And this past year it has gone from bad to miserable. I've always had an interest in philosophy and the concept spirituality has also been intriguing, although I never really explored it. Coming from atheist parents and having always called myself a devout atheist you could consider this an interesting turn of events. Funny enough, I am baptised into catholicism because of my family background, but never did anything with it. Now that I haven't had a panic attack for a day after a stressful month I can do one of two things. I could do what I have always done and return the human condition of neglecting the fact that I felt the need to talk to God. Or I could carry it with me, even though the sense of urgency is fading. I will do the latter. I will be watching your videos from now on and I will try to not do that passively, but reflect on it and explore. Perhaps it will lead me to a path of improvement. I don't know if this is of any interest to you, but I feel better already just having writen this down somewhere it will stay. Cheers.
Dear Laurens, no worries mate. Life is hard sometimes and it can be difficult for anyone to make sense of things. In light of that your comment was not lengthy at all! If you are feeling down, overwhelmed, stressed out, do not give up, do not let go. Courage! Fight the good fight! One day at a time. Look for what can center your existence and give it meaning. In that pursuit, putting God back in the picture is certainly a good thing. With God comes order - not only in the day to day but also overall. For if God is the source and end of all things, then in light of Him some things loose their weight - the very weight which weighs us down. As for watching my videos, I'm not sure they are helpful in case you use auto-translation. Then again your name sounds Dutch and maybe you understand German. But even so the current philosophy series (the playlist "Fundamentaltheologie Plus" has about 30 videos now - so if, I would recommend starting at the beginning rather than with next week's Episode 31) has been a little "academic" (read: unnecessarily complicated, probably, but it is based on a university level course I'm teaching in Austria) and may not be helpful as an introduction. Luckily for an English speaker there are many better resources than what I do here - especially for someone who might be looking at God as something yet "unknown" and maybe very different from a previous practically atheistic view of the world. If science and reason is an issue that you want to square in your research, pop over at Thomistic Institute. Unfortunately right now it would be very hard for me to visit a monastery in the foreseeable future. I do admit that I am still a little conflicted about religion. I am taking it seriously, but I guess it is natural that figuring these things out for yourself takes time. I think it has to do with a big switch in paradigm at the level of world- and self-view. It requires a change in heart at even the axioms of my thought constructs. All I can do is be patient, curious, and open to things I guess. Personally I would be very interested in an academic style of lecturing, but you would be correct to assume that my German comprehension leaves a lot to be desired. I'll still be watching though. I've been wanting to improve my German anyway, and I'm sure I'll still be enjoying it despite the struggle. I will be keeping an eye on Of_Hermits_and_Hogs. It sounds very interesting. I hope you can mitigate that sense of dread into something fulfilling. I have seen some really nice shots and editing on the channel already so I'm sure it will be something good. Die Präzisierungen in der resp. ad dubia und neuerlichen Verschärfungen, die vielleicht nicht die letzten waren, ändern an dieser Einschätzung nichts. Die Traditionalistische Bewegung hat ihre Probleme (wie alles, wo Menschen sind), aber dieser Kurs Roms ist mehr als bedauerlich. Was bleibt dem Gläubigen, was bleibt dem einfachen Priester? Es gilt: Dort wo eine kompetente Autorität diese ausübt, ist ihr Folge zu leisten - wenn sie nicht Sünde befiehlt. Haben die Betreffenden diese Autorität? Manche mögen hier streiten weil Liturgie wie auch der Glaube im Kern eine anvertraute Überlieferung und damit nicht frei verfügbar sind , aber die Antwort muss am Ende wohl lauten: ja. Denn der Kirche ist lediglich der Kern, das Sakrament, von Christus anvertraut, der Ritus hingegen ist gewachsen und wurde - for better or worse - in der Geschichte immer wieder verändert. Diese Änderungen mögen respektvoller gewesen sein unter Pius V als jene unter Paul VI, aber die Autorität muss am Ende beim Papst liegen, auch wenn man die Klugheit von Änderungen natürlich immer diskutieren kann und spätere Päpste Fehlentwicklungen korrigieren können/müssen. Autorität ist nicht Weisheit. Das zeigt die Kirchengeschichte oft - nur geht die Autorität dadurch nicht verloren. Bleibt das 2. Kriterium: Befehlen die Anweisungen Sünde? Die Antwort lautet wohl nein, auch wenn man noch so viel über fehlende Barmherzigkeit oder gar irrationalen ideologischen Hass bei den Verantwortlichen klagen wollte. Sünde liegt vielleicht in den Autoritäten, aber Sünde wird nicht befohlen, sondern bis auf leider wenig verbliebende Ausnahmen die Feier der Liturgie nach einen Messbuch, das wie alle Messbücher Schwächen hat. Vielleicht hat es mehr Schwächen. Vielleicht sind es nicht die besten Gebete und Gesten. Aber wenn sie nicht Sünde sind, ist auch eine Beschränkung auf dieses Messbuch per se keine Sünde. Was ist also zu tun? Fasten und Buße, auf dass diese Züchtigung am Ende heilsam ist. Sie ist nicht schön. Aber Gott lässt sie offensichtlich zu. Gott weiß wozu es Ihm dient. Was ist noch zu tun? Im Rahmen dessen, was die legitime Autorität angeordnet hat, gilt es kreativ alle Möglichkeiten auszunützen, die geblieben sind - und damit meine ich ggf auch die Fluidität des neuen Messbuchs auszureizen, um die Neue Messe, möglichst so zu feiern, wie die Alte - denn auch das war die Hoffnung Benedikts XVI., die uns (noch) völlig unbenommen ist. Und vielleicht wird in 50 Jahren, wenn die alten Ideologen unter der Erde liegen und die Alte Messe aufersteht, genau das auch die Bedingungen geschaffen haben. Wir wissen es nicht. Aber Gott weiß es. Nur Mut!

Meine grundsätzliche Sorge bezüglich TC habe ich ja schon in einem Video zum Ausdruck gebracht. Die Präzisierungen in der resp. ad dubia und neuerlichen Verschärfungen, die vielleicht nicht die letzten waren, ändern an dieser Einschätzung nichts. Die Traditionalistische Bewegung hat ihre Probleme (wie alles, wo Menschen sind), aber dieser Kurs Roms ist mehr als bedauerlich. Was bleibt dem Gläubigen, was bleibt dem einfachen Priester? Es gilt: Dort wo eine kompetente Autorität diese ausübt, ist ihr Folge zu leisten - wenn sie nicht Sünde befiehlt. Haben die Betreffenden diese Autorität? Manche mögen hier streiten weil Liturgie wie auch der Glaube im Kern eine anvertraute Überlieferung und damit nicht frei verfügbar sind , aber die Antwort muss am Ende wohl lauten: ja. Denn der Kirche ist lediglich der Kern, das Sakrament, von Christus anvertraut, der Ritus hingegen ist gewachsen und wurde - for better or worse - in der Geschichte immer wieder verändert. Diese Änderungen mögen respektvoller gewesen sein unter Pius V als jene unter Paul VI, aber die Autorität muss am Ende beim Papst liegen, auch wenn man die Klugheit von Änderungen natürlich immer diskutieren kann und spätere Päpste Fehlentwicklungen korrigieren können/müssen. Autorität ist nicht Weisheit. Das zeigt die Kirchengeschichte oft - nur geht die Autorität dadurch nicht verloren. Bleibt das 2. Kriterium: Befehlen die Anweisungen Sünde? Die Antwort lautet wohl nein, auch wenn man noch so viel über fehlende Barmherzigkeit oder gar irrationalen ideologischen Hass bei den Verantwortlichen klagen wollte. Sünde liegt vielleicht in den Autoritäten, aber Sünde wird nicht befohlen, sondern bis auf leider wenig verbliebende Ausnahmen die Feier der Liturgie nach einen Messbuch, das wie alle Messbücher Schwächen hat. Vielleicht hat es mehr Schwächen. Vielleicht sind es nicht die besten Gebete und Gesten. Aber wenn sie nicht Sünde sind, ist auch eine Beschränkung auf dieses Messbuch per se keine Sünde. Was ist also zu tun? Fasten und Buße, auf dass diese Züchtigung am Ende heilsam ist. Sie ist nicht schön. Aber Gott lässt sie offensichtlich zu. Gott weiß wozu es Ihm dient. Was ist noch zu tun? Im Rahmen dessen, was die legitime Autorität angeordnet hat, gilt es kreativ alle Möglichkeiten auszunützen, die geblieben sind - und damit meine ich ggf auch die Fluidität des neuen Messbuchs auszureizen, um die Neue Messe, möglichst so zu feiern, wie die Alte - denn auch das war die Hoffnung Benedikts XVI., die uns (noch) völlig unbenommen ist. Und vielleicht wird in 50 Jahren, wenn die alten Ideologen unter der Erde liegen und die Alte Messe aufersteht, genau das auch die Bedingungen geschaffen haben. Wir wissen es nicht. Aber Gott weiß es. Nur Mut!
