This scene feel like it's straight out Apocalypse Now and I think it represent one by one of all the troopers in the platoon perishing and to be forgotten in time :-(

This could fit perfectly in the movie adding more horror and fear in the movie it's a shame it was cut in the ending
Some movies had excellent deleted scenes like the A-10's formation scene in jarhead
