At the time I had a job repairing stringed instruments, had a metal band on the up n up, and all of a sudden I woke up one day with a complete paralysis of my left side (picking hand), this led me down a decade of drug and alcohol abuse. Never would pick my guitar up because I wasn’t ready to confront what I had lost. Ten years later and I “started playing again”. I heard this tune for the first time a few months ago. It's so simple and yet I feel every word in my soul. A man down and out trying to find a way to turn it around and not giving up. Amazing writing it brings me back to the place of having a broken heart and not knowing what to do, but doing it anyway. Perfection.
If it wasn’t for listening to TVZ Pancho and Lefty endlessly, I may have never been listening to this song endlessly. I played it for my 8yo son, and asked him what he thought the man singing it was feeling. He said, “It sounds like he’s really lonely. Like he needs a new beginning.” That resonates, and probably why I relate to this song so well. Why it spoke to me the second I heard it.
i still can’t believe i just heard about this man yesterday, he has a heart of gold and it’s a shame the recording companies stopped him from singing his songs
As part of the Austin songwriter community back in the 80’s, I knew Blaze fairly well. There were two schools of thought about him back then. Batshit crazy or misunderstood genius. I came in on the “little of both”side. I still think of him on occasion. Usually, when I see a roll of duct tape. Blaze could make quite a fashion statement with duct tape. RIP brother.
@Lyler Taley good point my friend. I fought the honky Tonk wars for many years. Don’t regret a minute of it. At 79 years old now that period holds my fondest memories. If you are a songwriter keep at it for the good of your own soul. Making it is not about money.
Come on now we all wish we could sleep under bar pool tables in Austin back in the day and just roll out and sing some bangers like this, love this man.
What an inspirational and beautiful person. So lucky to have found this by listening to John Prine. I hope Blaze can hear Prine singing his song in the tower of great songs.

I heard this tune for the first time a few months ago. It's so simple and yet I feel every word in my soul. A man down and out trying to find a way to turn it around and not giving up. Amazing writing it brings me back to the place of having a broken heart and not knowing what to do, but doing it anyway. Perfection.
Wish I'd found this talent sooner in life... promoting him every where I can these days
He has so much more great music
This is so beautiful in its simplicity. I love this song.
Beautiful. The golden ring I reach for....so simple, so deep.
Fantastic song.A genious on lyrics and music!
Wow he’s so awesome, such a great voice and finger picker❤️
As part of the Austin songwriter community back in the 80’s, I knew Blaze fairly well. There were two schools of thought about him back then. Batshit crazy or misunderstood genius. I came in on the “little of both”side. I still think of him on occasion. Usually, when I see a roll of duct tape. Blaze could make quite a fashion statement with duct tape. RIP brother.
A derelict in duct tape shoes
Duct tape messiah
@J. Bernays I live for these kind of comments.
@Lyler Taley good point my friend. I fought the honky Tonk wars for many years. Don’t regret a minute of it. At 79 years old now that period holds my fondest memories. If you are a songwriter keep at it for the good of your own soul. Making it is not about money.
@Lyler Taley good luck Brother!
Come on now we all wish we could sleep under bar pool tables in Austin back in the day and just roll out and sing some bangers like this, love this man.
Blaze got the whole package.. Goot guitar player, Great singer, and an Awsome songwriter.. and also a really cool and intresting dude ❗😎
Been one of my favorite songs for years but it’s so much more amazing to me, to actually see Blaze sing it
Blaze was a man born out of time...he belonged to a few previous decades. Special guy. Just found him thanks to the Tour Bus series, what a find tho.
Glad somebody captured and shared this big piece of music history.
Thank you, RUclips contributors. Ugh. One of the best country songs -- or song in any genre -- ever. So sad and beautiful. Amazed this exists.
This is everything I ever wanted from music, honesty, integrity, inclusion lovely.
Almost the best act I have ever seen and listened to. So simple so pure. Even more outlaw than "The Outlaws". Thank you so much for posting it.
dude has a dart in each ear what a baller
literally the most beautiful leayrics ive err' heard
Heheh i know i got a laugh from it in a good way because he's just so fresh like that hehe
I could listen to this 100 times in a row!
Absolutely beautiful. What more can one say. Bless you in heaven Blaze.
What an inspirational and beautiful person. So lucky to have found this by listening to John Prine. I hope Blaze can hear Prine singing his song in the tower of great songs.
I just found this, between him and John prine they truly know life, I just got another brother .RIP.
i get it and i wish i didn't
Exactly.
real recognizes real. Pain recognizes pain.
Sez the Byrd brain.
Bruh ❤️ Right there with ya.
Then stop running around looking for answers to questions you already know.
What a fantastic career you have had it amazes me how much effort you put into everything that you do - such energy. A man to be admired that’s for sure. Thanks for putting Warrington on the map.
Greetings from BR, Guys! this something I Hold preciously!

hey, meu velho! br aqui tb! salve salve
This is a perfect song.
"Clay Pigeons", and "If I Could Only Fly".. My favorite 2 songs from this great man!! I can listen all day!
I'm goin' down to the Greyhound station
Gonna get a ticket to ride
Gonna find that lady with two or three kids
And sit down by her side
Ride 'til the sun comes up and down around me
'Bout two or three times
Smokin' cigarettes in the last seat
Tryin' to hide my sorrow from the people I meet
And get along with it all
Go down where the people say "Y'all"
Sing a song with a friend
Change the shape that I'm in
And get back in the game, start playin' again
I'm tired of runnin' 'round lookin'
For answers to questions that I already know
I could build me a castle of memories
Just to have somewhere to go
Count the days and the nights that it takes
To get back in the saddle again
Feed the pigeons some clay, turn the night into day
Start talkin' again, when I know what to say
So good
What fools did not like this? Are you for real?
He doesn't sing the part about going back to Texas, does anybody know why?
The fact that I’ve heard 35+ covers from legends such as John prine and such… shows how talented and amazing this is
I'll never be cool enough to have a cigarette behind each ear
Tom Beales it's never too late
or poor enough?
Don't give up yet.
10/10 one of them is a joint
and they are those no-filter lung rockets too...
This is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard and I discovered it by accident doing a search on RUclips for the soundtrack to the movie Clay Pigeons the results came up on my screen, the first thumb nail was Clay pigeons with little knowledge of the movie I mistakenly selected and played blazes Clay pigeons right away I knew it was not the search I was looking for however I was hooked instantly I love all blazes music but clay pigeons I consider to be my first love and one of my favorite songs of all time the song that made me love blaze Foley’s music much as I do this man is a legend and will never be forgotten
listened to this song for about 4 hours one day.
Today has been that day for me
One of the greatest songs ever written. This man was too pure for this world. Wish I knew you blaze and lived around you when you lived. I can’t even come to America... I often think I’m you minus any talent ha. Perhaps in another life blaze :(
Happy birthday Blaze! One of the greatest talents this country ever produced which most of the world has never known. Slap a couple strips of duct tape on your boots and ride on easy, Duct Tape Messiah.
I first heard John Prine singing this and loved it. Great to come across this. Fabulous. ❤❤
this is great !! love the song and have always wanted to see BLADE Do It LIVE. This Is priceless thankyou
After our songwriting, train-hopping daughter Jasmine Cherise Curiosity was murdered by her landlord in 2011, her father had a dream that she was with Blaze Foley and they were playing this song.
Despite loving contemporaries like Townes Van Zandt and John Prine, I'd never heard of him until that moment.
I googled him to see if I could see him play, only to learn of his murder.
Grateful this is here.
It's worth more than gold and jewels to me
❤
That is unreal. So beautiful.
Thank you, it’s been a pleasure stopping by...
Start talking when I know what say. I feel that in my soul.
