  • I decided to get out the old 4 track this weekend. I bought it back in the last century. It was a major purchase back in the day. It seems to be in ok shape but one wonders why I would bother to use it with today's advanced technology. Everything is twice as much work. You have to run lots of cables. There's dropouts (the bass guitar kinda disappears half way through) and the monitor mix is pretty horrible. But I thinks it the same reason why people make sourdough bread...
I pretty much used first takes because I wasn't sure how long it would continue to work. I used a separate mixing board hoping to have more control. Also I used my favorite garage rock amp of all time. This 1955 Gibson GA-20 looks horrible but it's a mean machine. I showed up to a recording session last year and the engineer asked if I had salvaged it from the Titanic! Bill Littleford - guitar, bass, drums

Chewy stuff! VERY nicely conceived and done.

Thanks, yeah I think that Gibson amp is best for over driven sounds.

Solid stuff man. Real laid back and dynamic. I've seen a few of your vids now, all great stuff.
I'm working with a silverface champ and have to record at some fairly low volumes. Stuck using an sm58 with the cover removed for now and was wondering if you had any tips.
I'm going to run some tests with the back amp covers removed and a few other things like that.

Thanks! As for tips, sometimes you have to move the mic around until you find the sweet spot. Which it sounds like you’re already doing that. Of course what room you record in will effect it some if you try to get a room sound. Sometimes I try using a condenser mic at low volumes. But you got to work with what mics you got. Anyway, good luck with your recordings!

Great tone never gets old! Nothing like a Tele. Cool to incorporate some of the technical aspects of the recording into the whole thing. What's the mic? Thanks for posting.

Thanks! The mic you see in the picture is a Electro Voice RE11. And there's also a Sennheiser MK4 condenser mic a couple feet away to pick up more of the room sound. I just mixed the two together.
