Thank you for having proper microphones for this extremely thorough interview. Well done, Dave!
decent mics, could use some post processing, but decent enough for a yt video
Love the design, love the enthusiasm ! The matruska design concept is a very useful touch that we met earlier in the Stella vita camper van.
Clicked on this just because I watch all Dave's content. Started off thinking I wouldn't finish it but then they said they both worked at Tesla and I thought ok... Let's see what they got. Awesome design for a 1st iteration. Def the future right here. Awesome content Dave! Didn't know I wanted to see this!
Thanks Dave Lee for producing this. I Love the technology! Great job guys!
This ev trailer hits all the correct buttons. The electric assist motor is something I wasn't expecting. So cool
To me its a little bit of a design miss -- to make that sort of feature worth it you have to do a LOT of towing. But the half height design means you don't have nearly enough storage (and likely that means tankage too) to make this a full timers trailer.
@@redwolfexr yeh I understand the cost of having the electric assist but just the idea of a trailer pushing its own weight. Just think if this function hooks up with your trailer plug "BUS" cable your primary vehicle like an EV doesn't even have to be rated for pulling the weight of the trailer. Kind of cool idea but it's a prototype.
@@markcollins457 yeah, I get that they are tossing everything in and seeing what sticks. There are actually other trailers out there with assistive drive... e-Stream is Airstreams prototype. The difference is you can full time in an Airstream and I don't think you could in this trailer.
It LOOKS really nice and I suspect most people would want to park this on a slab at the lake that has power.
Not a EV trailer 😂 can u drive the EV 😂 when u say EV I'm thinking of a electric car 😂
The electric motor assist is very interesting, I've been thinking about that for a few years ago. It's definitely as it frozen cons. A few points of discussion.
Typically towing vehicle: they need to be heavy enough to be able to control the camper. Adequate power with good breaking capacity.
Trailers and campers: They commonly have breaks built into them to help with breaking. That's proven to be safe, do the fact we're pulling against the toe vehicle. The system uses a type of feedback masters cylinder at the bumper hitch the brakes.
Electric Assist Trailers: A trailer loaded with batteries can assist with the towing vehicle by reducing the tolling load. It may also assist the towing vehicle by regenerative breaking as well as hydraulic breaks. Both the systems can be control by a feedback actuator at the bumper. Similar to the standard master cylinder driven by feedback liver at the hitch.
What do yeall think, would greatly increase a vehicle is low capacity for pulling? I think this is a miss numer because the weight of the towing vehicle is necessary to control the trailer safely. I think it's a great idea to reduce fuel consumption only. Love to hear your thoughts.
They're definitely headed in the right direction. 👍🏻
Wow only thing they did got ride of the propane add a charging battery to it so u can charge it
Looks great! Love the idea of adding a battery and a drivetrain, and also the two levels, so it’s aerodynamic while towing it and feels so spacious while camping.
he's heard so much from Elon Musk that he started talking like him as well :) lol Good tech, well covered Dave, liked!
Having seen a bazillion failed start-ups, I was initially skeptical... but I am now convinced that this is straight-up legit. You were throwing question after question after question. This guy was throwing answer after answer after answer (*NDA & proprietary topics excluded, of course). He was dodging nothing. I am honestly impressed. Also, you were asking some really good questions. Perhaps the only wishy-washy response was regarding the windows vs. rocks, but there may be some clever solutions to address that concern. GREAT interview.
It looks like the majority of those front windows would be covered by the aero fairing when in the lowered mode.
they literally refused to do tech spec discussion with @outofspec.......
@@laloajuria4678 Yeah, they have to be careful when giving specs. If they inadvertently give too much information, someone could perform a few calculations to discover additional information that they may not have intended to provide. Once the product is on the street, all bets are off.
Yeah legit to fail, the RV industry is huge and this thing will be way over priced for what you get.
Also its going to appeal to a very small amount of people in the recreational lifestyle.
This rv if you want to call it that will fail....
It reminds me of the old Hi-Los. They offered a tip-out room in some of theirs. The next step will be integrating a slide out and possibly making it bigger for FT use. One of the challenges of the pop-up design will be incorporating a full-size freeze-fridge.
Wow! Truly the future of RVing. Was not expecting the powered assist. With reduced side/frontal profile and the power assist the vehicles that can pull this should be much greater than anything of the same length.
Go back to school this is not RVing its camping a camper not a RV.. this is a camper RV that u pull around with a car or truck RV is where u drive it
@@lofiDigitalArt2 hmm “official” definitions either specifically call out “trailer” or make no reference to “motor only”. I know it’s hard being wrong, it’s ok, happens to us all. Your rude comment is noted and now the world knows the type of person you are. Hope you have a great day.
Totally called it that they had photochromatic windows. The worst thing is putting up window shades every night in an RV, so most people just give up and keep them up the whole time which ruins the view
Definitely bringing yacht design language into the RV market and I'm all here for it.
One of the windows could be a flipping TV for inside/outside viewing tied to 360 cameras and could also be a mirror…. Could work as advertising for food service
Great interview Dave Lee! I wasn't too sure about the kitchen drawers. I didn't see where they locked closed & they were kind of rickety while opening & closing. Those definitely have to be addressed! Overall, the Lightship looks nice! I checked online on their website. The longer lasting unit, after the $500 deposit, is estimated to be $151,000. Then there's something about a tax credit & you end up paying under 140K. Also, it looks like there will be a little bit of a wait to actually own one. They don't anticipate starting production until late in 2024. So, I'm thinking you wouldn't be able to physically receive one, realistically, until 2025. Thanks for the video!
Either the RV or the towing truck needs to have 240V power out so you can charge the tow vehicle while the RV is also plugged in. Usually there is only one 50A outlet at campsites.
What RV? This is a camper
@@lofiDigitalArt2 Same thing
Since 2001 I have designed and built over 3000 battery based RV power systems. Our customers are living and traveling full time and make and store all their power with our systems. Nothing new under the sun but it does have a coolness factor.
That’s what u was thinking. Isn’t a new concept just new look.
That was my first thought but the assisted propulsion is something.
Rodney, if Tesla made a RV to tow with cyber truck that had its own battery and propulsion while connected, I would buy it!
@@Lovingkindness. one thing they need to figure out is charging. Ideally you want that thing charging at the same time as your truck
Wow great job Dave, but let me ask you what are the possibilities beyond RVing, portable office? Medical unit? Food truck? Field lab? Any ideas?
Interesting concept and some good ideas. Does it make sense to put a drive unit in the trailer as they plan? It might be simpler to just have a battery and pass power to the tow vehicle. Electric vehicles have plenty of torque for towing, battery capacity is the bottleneck. However, towing stability (anti-sway) depends on trailer braking (especially downhill), so it would be great to have regenerative braking in the trailer... hence the need for a drive unit. The windows appear to be single-pane automotive style. With all that glass area, I would expect the trailer would be hard to heat or cool. They probably need to go to double-pane plastic with integrated insulating shades. The design of the main bed seems clunky and awkward... maybe facing couches that fold down electrically into a bed (or twin beds) would be better, but the trailer is pretty narrow, makes designing a bed hard. I think I'd rather have a camperized electric van.
Should have a convection toaster oven instead of a microwave…. healthier cooking, more versatility
Eriba have been making pop up caravans in Europe since the 1950’s. Solar panels, batteries and aerodynamics all good things to champion. Keeping weight down will be important. Dethleffs have a prototype caravan with electric motors and battery a few years ago. Good luck with this, it’s an excellent concept.👍
I love the dish washer, micro wave, sink and specially the T&B. I am just not impressed with the bedroom. I hope they would consider putting partition. Maybe a pocket/sliding door for privacy. And perhaps use up some of the space for closet and washer & dryer. I also wonder how the RV windows would stand a heavy hail storm. Other than that I think the materials used for this RV is very sturdy and modern. 🙂
It never thought of the trailer just having its own drive train so it powers itself as opposed to being fully towed.
10:48 there ya go!! Now we’re talking. Trailer assisting itself along. Nice.
Can't wait til y'all make a 5th wheel! Definitely stoked for this product though I'll keep a close eye on this brand for a few years.
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome product... Thanks Dave!!!
This tech looks real cool and very practical. Hope they scale up quickly and roll it out to market way faster.
Love this thing, lots of really good ideas in there!
Be great to think into design following:
1. Open hatch in back for e-bikes inside or smell motorcycle. Many of us will unpack bikes. E-bikes heavy. Trailer doubles as utility if rear hatch if wanna load.
2. Move bath to front so no rocks break the front windows.
3. Everyone I speak to want a 5th wheel airstream so vehicle and trailer fit in double parking spaces in normal lots. Opens so many doors. Connection point do much stronger too on 5th wheel.
What bi-directional heat pump did they pick?
Dave, thanks for sharing this. I am also an RVing fun. I wonder why they claim to be the first? You do know they are not first. Neither in North America, nor outside. The other electric RVs are fully motorized electrically. But I am looking forward to new design, material, and engineering explorations for RVs to come. I like the wrap around drain in the shower :) I like the ideas and solutions along recirculating water and new toilet technologies, including the incinerating ones, but he did not touch on any of these.
Do they have plans to Exspand to the 5-Wheel side
Great video, @Dave Lee. Thanks for sharing!
This is a revolution. I was truly impressed by the founder being interviewed. Their previous experience at Tesla really gives confidence in the company culture and engineering first approach. There are so many incredible features to this vehicle. The aerodynamic approach, solar panels and motor assist unit are a brilliant trifecta to ensure that towing doesn't reduce any mileage of the EV pulling it. The wall to wall windows in the interior with touch button privacy was the highlight of the interior design.
My only suggestion would be to add a little more luxury to the interior trim. The beds especially could really use an upgrade in terms of mattress quality and comfort. Not being able to get a full nights sleep do to a mildly uncomfortable sleeping situation can totally kill your enjoyment of an outdoor experience. I was also surprised that it only slept 4 people. A lot of families would be excluded from using this RV if they have 5 or more people. Also if a husband and wife or couple want to go camping, they definitely want the ability to bring another couple at the very least and showing them this amazing futuristic RV but then offering them a "bed" that's literally sleeping on a table... eh. I'd actually be a little embarrassed to point to that table and say "that's your bed for the next 3-5 nights!" Maybe they can integrate and fold down bed somehow above the master bed? I'm not sure but that's the Only area that I would suggest they go back to the drawing board and do some more work.
tesla really gave birth to so many new companies... so great
How 😂 this is a camper not a EV 😂 it's a camper not a RV u can't even drive it
LOVE THIS !!!!!!!
This is Awesome, and Wow! LOVE THE PASSION!!
Interesting product. Biggest concern is the master bed of course. No privacy. With kids, forget any privacy ya know. Storage looks to be very light, the rails should help.
Love the first pass at this. The solar and batteries and such is great engineering from what it sounds.
I agree on the sleeping situation. They have the height to design an upper bunk. It's much needed. Full size mattress second level over the first.
A few practical questions: For the main sleeping area, is there a way to put on a fitted sheet? For the secondary sleeping area, the table top lowers to the top level of the cushions, but where are the pads to make a bed? Is there and exhaust fan built into the bathroom light or somewhere else in the bath?
The windows would be so much better if in privacy mode you can still see out but it stops anyone seeing in, being able to see out is good for security, otherwise it would need a good cctv system to show all around the van.
with that much power available I'd love to see the flame toilet as an option like offered by princess and others they do need a 240v supply though
would also like to see a recirculating shower option
Interesting design. Love the contemporary look. However, the downside is the stowage area. You lost pretty much all of the wall cabinets. I wonder if they can figure out how to fold wall cabinets up in road mode and fold them down in car mode. I also wonder how the trailer motor is communicating with the towing 🚗, how it accelerates and brakes in sync with the towing car. Also, I would love the gooseneck 5th wheel better than the trailer design.
Very interesting, thank you so much for sharing. I'll do more research about this EV-RV
Niiiiiiiccccceeeeee! Leaks??? Both my motorhome and travel trailer suffered with leaks. Beautiful interview. First time seeing you Dave Lee. Thank you.
Looking for more info on the Joe Justice/Cyberlandr connection & if there might be a towable, powered option?
I love it. .... it's been almost a year and a half since I talked to them and I've been so excited to see it come to life. Can't wait to see it irl .
Thanks for the showcase Dave.
Great scoop Dave.
Thanks for sharing. I just put my deposit down. Looking forward to 2025 road trip. The price point is pretty competitive compared to the price of a decent hotel. This will pay for itself in 10 years or better depending on if you rent it out which could pay for itself in probably in 3 years.
What is the price point? If they discussed it, I missed it.
Thanks for the video Dave, this trailer looks so unique!
Thank you Dave. Great video. I want one, now I have to convince my wife.
Having lived in an RV for a year, I was wondering where all the storage is? Closet for clothes, pantry, big drawers for supplies, shoes, etc. Those rail bags would not be very convenient for getting things in and out daily. It looks really cool but seems a little too clever. Dishwasher? Just more space taken.
How does the electric assist integrate with the vehicle so that it doesn't over run the vehicle and push the vehicle?
Agreed! The Winnebago’s of the world are out to lunch on electric. Time for a major disruption! Imagine running all HVAC, cooking, lights etc off the EV battery.
I saw it a couple days ago myself at southby. I asked them if it could be towed by a cybertruck and they said NO PROBLEM THERE
Love love love. Great technically ! Looks like lots of development to come. How about customization? Slide out necessary balance easily solved with supports give it consideration. Many older people need the space 😉. The light from windows fabulous 👍 best luck
Great concept & prototype!
Ben seems excited enough, but could use a course in Toast Masters ~
Hallelujiah! I had been hoping that someone would take a Tesla-esque or Jony Ive-esque design to RVs! So far they look like chimeric contraptions, with all kinds of equipment bolted on, sticking out of the main volume: Ladders, awnings, air conditioners, gas cylinders, communication equipment, solar panels are added on creating noise and turbulence. Even unavoidable details, like handles, lights and air vents sit proud of the surface. Finally! Tesla trained engineers that plan to accommodate equipment within the outer envelope. Best wishes for speedy success!
That is just VERY COOL 😎
I find the near zero range lose incredible.
"Build to last" That one statement makes me want to support these guys. I hate the modern built to fail so you have to keep replacing paradyme
Love the future. Looks great 👍
That is beautiful. Great work!
A few comments: drop down Murphy bed, hinged separation wall swing down from ceiling to kind of make a bedroom more privacy, modular storage modules are better off with fiberglass material than fabric, need more electrical wall outlets, not enough ext storage. More cabinets that can be folded down in road mode but fold up to the wall, yes block some windows but storage is very limited here. Love it over all still. Perhaps, instead of 27", make it 33" or 38" versions too?
Tell them they need a excited spokes person. It would go a long way to helping promote their product. I think these guys are techies.
So awesome!!!
How Long is the Light shipL1
OK I could live in that - like permanently!
I bend my gf's ear on the RV that I want to build someday. I love outside of the box thinking. I really hope that someone comes up with my design someday because it beats this thing in many ways.
Great story about the dishwasher.
what about the screens for window to keep the bugs out?? I hope you guys get that in order before production.
Cool product and a great interview Dave!
Wow! This is such an incredibly thought-out RV. I am blown away by this. The Lightship is something that can change the world with simple sustainability and efficiency. Between the Lightship and the Cyberlandr campers and future campers are in good hands. Thanks for sharing this, Dave. 🤖🧡
Black tank scrub out? Macerator? Smell management? compost vs cassette vs dump vs pump?
21st century airstream, brilliant. This is definitely going to be part of the future, with the trailer roof space there’s no reason it can’t help extend range including semi trailers.
Loving your channel Dave keep up the great work!
Thx Dave my kind of RV!
I’ve bought and sold 2 campers. This would get me back out there!!!
I suggested adding a handheld sprayer in the shower for those who need it.
Great RV walk through. Have you compared it to CyberLandr, an Austin based company?
This is gorgeous😍❤️i love it💕
Mini house redesign option for future would be awesome
Wow amazing. I love it. Giving me hope for the future 😅
Very cool! Great video Dave!
I like it but the glass needs covers. Gonna get cracked up a LOT otherwise
Rocks and RV’s, big concern
Great video and exciting promising product. A few questions (1) can the gear rail system handle say a hammock or netting to throw stuff like surfboard, etc.. (2) yes on the outdoor shower option! (3) Is there a way to make the front on the doors/cabinets magnetic or of more utility like a white board that can be removed from the front and used for planning dinner, activities, etc..
The two options I would like to see are -
An upper bed. The ceiling is high enough a mattress or hammock could be engineered in.
Second an option for a composting toilet. I have found the composting toilet has less smell then the enclosed sewer. It also is so much easier to process than the big dump u have to do with a black tank. It will make so many things easier. Also All the current commercial composting toilets are too complicated on the intake- and need better engineering on the out take.
U would need a smaller black tank also.
Oooh... and less weight with the dry toilet.
Awesome RV! One day i hope to own one! The window that opens should have a mesh that can open or remain closed to keep out bugs. The window should open electronically. Should have security cameras everywhere like Tesla. Also have those cameras viewable on mobile devices or interface with tesla so when turning or reversing the driver can do it safely using cameras on the RV. Hopefully has built in 4G LTE or partner with StarLink and create custom monthly plans. Footsteps and door should be automatic. Lol. I know sounds lazy, but think luxury. 😅
WOW
Can we live in it... you know,... TO HELP THEM TEST IT?
Lol I LOVE IT❣️
So many good ideas, but the bathroom should be in the front because of window chipping. Also the future needs a more ikea approach. Some people want separate sleeping spaces some don’t. I would want a lift bed leaving access to my glass back door with a fold down porch. I love the modular rail and I’ve been designing the same thing for switching items over with my boat and rv. Also I love the large food truck window idea. I wouldn’t want to use it in the winter though. Also I didn’t see a trash can. It’s probably the coolest production camper I’ve ever seen.
That would look really great with a Cyber truck pulling it
Any option for a TV inside & outside? Any options for solar panels being integrated into the roof? & an outdoor kitchen.
But great design. Love the bathroom & kitchen. The bathroom is so cute.
They showed the panels at the beginning but if you blinked you missed it. 3kw they said. Also he mentioned they’re working on an outdoor kitchen. No tv though. They should consider a projector option maybe
Cool, thanks for the video
It really looks like you built quality and reliability into you design. Currently, the RV Industry has no standards.
Not a RV 😂 it's a camper
WOW, this is awesome. Love the creativity.
Where did the table legs come from??
What is the best way to charge truck and trailer? Both at the same time they’d occupy a whole array of chargers.
Do they have any innovations in terms on setup and packing up the vehicle? Electronic motors on the leveling jacks with auto-leveling would be great.
Love how Tesla dangles one right in front of our faces 😊
Well taught out design this will revolutionize the industry
It's a nice idea to have the trailer help push.. but that can also be a bit dangerous in many situations. I'm assuming there's a way to turn it on and off on the fly?
Great review from someone that understands RVing. Thanks Dave!
