  • Another awesome Mediocre Subscriber suggestion. Hadn't even considered this area until two subscribers suggested I go. Hats off to them and everyone else who has suggested an adventure. My list grows longer by the day. On this episode I travel solo to New Mexico to climb the states tallest mountain, Wheeler peak. As a bonus I pieced together a traverse I'm calling the Taos Traverse even though I'm positive it has another name. In the end I got to enjoy 16 miles of some of New Mexicos finest terrain.

I'm middle aged (if I live to 100), these vids are great for a lot of us that may never make it to some of these parts. I would love to hit all these places Danny takes us to, so I'll just say maybe someday. BUT I'm planning to make it AZ's highest point next weekend, Humphrey's Peak. Wish me luck~!

Awesome place to be. Those aren't domesticated sheep. They are wild but don't have many worries because there are very few big horn sheep hunts here so they don't get too spooked by humans. They have recently re-established heards all over NM. The heards in the Wheeler area are growing fast so many have been taken from there and re-introduced into other natural big horn sheep habitat across NM. On a side note, Wheeler Peak was one of the best hiking trips I've ever had to date!

I’m glad you explained your filming by yourself, because that is a lot of extra time and energy.
    Just amazing.
I love hiking and climbing, but after several injuries, it’s not as easy at nearly 64, but I still get out there.

I just want to say thank you. Being a youtuber and doing all those camera shots was not easy and might be a little unsafe to climb those ridges, place your camera, then climb it and go back to get the camera. If only they made a camera we could place down, pass by it, then it would come back to us 🤔. Great work on this one. Appreciated big time.

The other name for this route (at least for the Wheeler > Kachina leg) is the Wheeler Cirque. I did a shorter version of this hike last summer, by taking the Williams Lake trail to the summit of Wheeler, and then the Class 2-3 traverse of all the peaks to Kachina. Once at Kachina I ran into the first other hikers I'd seen for hours, a couple of Indian tourists. We all ended up hiking/sliding down Kachina to a ski lift, which we rode back to the Bavarian. Good times!

You guys should come and do Mt Borah in Idaho. It isn't too large with a summit level of 12,667ft. The trail is just over 3 miles long one way so the elevation gain is kinda severe with close to 5,200ft gain. I loved every moment I spent on the mountain. I would highly recommend it to you guys.

I did the trail version of this hike from the ski area to the peak and back. There is a nice camping area near the treeline in a nice forest with the final creek crossing before climbing to the peak. We stayed there overnight on the first day, then came down, broke camp and hiked out.
When we first set up our tent in that camping area we could just barely see the top of a thunderhead over the ridge to the east. The sky was 95% blue sky with the exception of the top of the thunderhead. All of a sudden this thunderhead threw out some lightning that went over the ridge and hit a tree about 200 feet from where we were standing. We were talking to the other folks setting up camp there. We high tailed it to our tent, which was a Frostline Kit, a company younger hikers have no knowledge of. Unfortunately it had metal poles, which didn't make me feel real safe. Within a half hour thunderheads built above us and we got a hard rainstorm for an hour or two.

Glad you finally got to do the cirque on Wheeler. Elbert will be like a rest day unless you turn it into a loop somehow. It seems unlikely you've missed it since it is in Utah, but if you haven't done Tuk and Peale that's a worthwhile loop hike/ridge scramble to take a look at. The middle section has a special name, and it was definitely worth the climb.

Nice, NM is getting some love lately. I also hadn't even considered that area before stumbling on a different video. I just got back from a week in the Gila Wilderness NM and posted up a video of it. No joke it rivals places like the Escalante river canyons. You could do what I did and loop two rivers by traversing the high mesa in between them or you could do what you do and climb whitewater baldy peak close to 12k ft I think.
