I noticed that the focus of the discussion changed from Pastors having private jets to rich billionaires having private Jets.. Bottom line is Parr and Ruslan are wrong.. in addition most if not all of the pastors who brow beat their congregations into financing their opulent lifestyles are usually prosperity teachers.. which are "False Prophets" ! Probably would make more sense to charter flights when needed.. realistically if you're a pastor how many times a year are you traveling doing ministry to justify the astronomical costs of purchasing, maintaining and staffing a private jet ?

A person’s calling could be that of a pastor but that pastor may have numerous gifts associated or disassociated with such calling. Your definition of Pastor is monogamous in nature. A pastor may also be a business person, governmental influencer, a financial mogul, a successful writer or lyricist. These gifts in no way devalue or illegitimize the
      calling.
Bishop Horace E. Smith, M.D. fulfilled his “calling” and became pastor in 1980 of the Apostolic Faith Church, located in Chicago, Illinois, and has been pastor of that church for the past 43 years.
In addition to being a pastor, however, Bishop Smith is an attending physician specializing in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago (formerly Children’s Memorial Hospital), for over 20 years, is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine, and is recognized world-wide as an outstanding pediatrician in his field. Thus, he is a world renowned pediatric hematologist and oncologist.
Dr. Smith’s vocation as a medical doctor specializing in hematology and oncology has absolutely nothing to do with his calling as a pastor. A pastor is only part of who he is not the sum total.

How privileged are we to even get to have the conversation. It's kind of disgusting. I think most of us in America have never looked into the eyes of a starving child. We've never sat next to an 8 yr old little girl being trained into prostitution so she can be assured of a meal every day. We've never considered the little boy selling straw flowers in a market on our cruise destination trying to raise money for a uniform so he can attend school. I've seen these kids. I've played with them and talked to them and hugged them.
I can't live in extravagance after what I've seen and experienced. Period. I think this is such an abstract convo. I would love to know how many pastors are actually billionaires that have obtained their funds ethically. We are talking about such a teeny tiny minority. Seriously. Respect reaching for a moral to this story, but pretty thin. Most Americans live in excess and we really, really hate being convicted about it. And all of us, including myself, probably could and should do better.

I appreciate you starting with yourself. Unfortunately you painted a bit of a false binary, one can have things for convenience like a car, AC, healthy food, a washer/dryer or even a PS5 while still giving to those in need. I think this comes down to vision. We’ve partnered with charity water and raised enough to build a clean water system for a full village that will change their life and create a huge ROI to them being able to farm and sustain themselves in the future. The issue is vision. Point to specific causes like charity water (which gives 100% of what they raise to their cause) and people will come together and do incredible things. But people also need to earn and be able to enjoy the fruits of their labor to fund these missions.

@@BlessGodStudios Maybe I didn't do a good job at getting my point across. We take our kids on vacation every year. We have no public transportation where I live, so yes we have 2 reliable cars. I stay at home with my kids and home school. We own a nice house. I very much realize my privilege.
I'm not totally disagreeing. I was trying to point out that, even though there are impoverished places in America, most of us can live our lives never turning our eyes on true poverty or need. Then it's easier to justify our extravagance because we don't even see it as extravagance. Most of us could do better, as I said, myself included. It's just not on our hearts and minds because materialism is in front of our eyes 24/7. Anyways, no hate. Love what you guys are doing here.

there's no need to feel terrible because of your privilege. The best anyone can and/or should do is to handle it responsibly. Nothing in life is equal across the board, there's almost always someone above and below you. As long as you aren't bullying the weak. You don't need to throw your dinner away because someone you aren't directly responsible for hasn't eaten lunch.
I grew up in Africa, and I can recognize that I have a lot of privileges that a lot of people never got. Not that life was easy, but it wasn't as hard as some that I've seen others live through. At the same time I also recognize that some people can still look at my childhood and marvel at what I've been through.
All this to say, don't feel bad for your privilege, but don't take it for granted either. Appreciate what you have and handle it responsibly. Be as generous as you can, but don't neglect your responsibility to yourself and those you are responsible for. Get yourself a steak if you can, be grateful not remorseful. Thank God everyday, and bless every meal before you eat, and thank Jesus that you never have to look into the eyes of a starving 8 year old.

Youve missed the mark if you think that’s why most Bible reading Christians have a problem with Pastor wealth. These videos and subsequent responses show who really does, in fact, actually read the Bible. Shoot, it’s not even like it’s hidden in the corners and shadows of the Bible, and when you finally find those elusive passages you need help from biggest, baddest, rabbi around to understand them. They are some of Jesus’ most popularized thoughts and sayings. “It’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God”. And there are plenty more popular and obscure passages that cover this.

Any instances I am aware of the plane would not be the pastor's personal plane, but belong to the ministry--the plane would have to serve a ministerial function (e.g. getting a pastor over long distances quickly, or getting food and emergency supplies somewhere that could not be accomplished easily by other means.

I think those two incomes levels differ so great that the argument is moot. Let's Say DJ Mykael V makes $200,000 (I have no idea how much he makes; I'm just making up a number as an example). If he gave away 75% to charitable causes, he'd be left with $50,000, which is about the average American salary. If a pastor who makes $2 million a year gave away 75% of his yearly income, he'd be left with $500,000, still leaving him nearly in the top 1% of all American earners. To contextualize matters in terms of what one can "afford" doesn't really make much sense here.

    • @tyleradamson7242
      @tyleradamson7242 2 года назад +3

@@M-JACOY It seems it does make sense here. If there is no objective standard for giving and there isn’t, then we cannot force people to give and if those people both earned their money honestly, it is not the fault of the richer man that he was paid more, his labor was simply worth more to the people or company who paid it. Also if each gives equally in percentage then they are both equal in their glory to God. The woman who stepped forward to Jesus and gave mere pennies was said to have given more than all the rich men who laid down extravagantly, but what they gave was still a small portion of their wealth compared to the pennies being a large portion of the woman’s wealth. So it seems to be the issue is portion (percentage). It’s not a moot point, I don’t think anyways. If we are giving generously as God has put on our hearts, and are earning our living honestly. Then the way we increase our portion but still follow God is to give generously, but work hard and also attempt to abundantly provide for our families while also being able to give more. It seems that would be incentive to work harder. Solomon and David were rich. Paul and The apostles were poor. All were glorified unto God. There were rich people Jesus blessed and poor people Jesus blessed. It seems the line to decide if someone is giving generously is only decided by portion and that is unto each person’s heart as directed by God. What you have left over is either due to greed, or valuable work. I would say these jet flying pastors are due to greed, as they flaunt the jets. But I would say the same about someone who wears flashy clothes. But in each case I’m not sure of that person’s heart. My family has a Yukon, some may call that flaunting, but I really only wanted to ride comfortably with my family of 5 and we could afford it, to that outside observer my heart does not matter just the appearance. I think the amount of income matters because it’s something to strive for as long our hearts stay in the right place. The percentage of giving matters because it shows where your priorities lie as well.

@@tyleradamson7242 Great response, Tyler! I still see a few things differently though. The poor widow is a great example. I think that discussion is grander than just portions. In other words, it's not merely that the widow gave a large portion of her wealth; it's what that sacrifice meant to her. Let's juxtapose that with, say, Elon Musk whose network is about 263 billion dollars. If Musk were to give away 99% of his net worth, he'd still be left with ... over 2 BILLION dollars. Yes, this is a sacrifice, but there would minimal change in lifestyle (law of diminishing returns). So you see, acknowledging the percentage given is inadequate in understanding the real sacrifice made.

Yet, some Christian spend that same money on a PS5 to play video games and waste their time since they are bored. Should Christians never spend on themselves because of this? No, they are allowed to spend significantly on themselves, as long as they lead a life that is generous to the poor.
Let's pose a hypothetical scenario: imagine you work a 9 to 5 and after you work, their is a donation box that you always put $20 in. However, after work one time, you decided to not to put any money in the box and spend that on a toy in a store that you wanted. Does this mean you don't live a generous lifestyle? Of course not, and this isn't even accounting for the wealthy Christians who donate 40-50% of their wealth, while still having money left over to live an extravagant lifestyle (assuming that it isn't showy). So many Christians in the Bible were filthy rich and spent on themselves but this wasn't considered a sin. James 3:1: Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.
If you decide to take up that mantle you have to understand the weight of it. I don’t have a definite stance on the matter I’ll have to dig a little deeper, but I do believe that if you are a believer with access to that kind of capital, you’ll really have to sit down before God and ask yourself if it’s necessary.
Personally I think the better bet would be to buy significant shares in a company with private chartering if that’s possible and then you can get access to private flights without burning that excessive amount of capital, and you can use what you would’ve spent on maintenance now helping people.

Here's my wondering on this: If a pastor has a jet and can afford all of costs in utilizing it on a regular basis, and we are comparing that to a Joe Schmo owning a car, then the spending on either should be an equal percentage for each person's net worth, with equal percentages budgeted out for everything else-all proportioned out equally in conjunction with each person's (pastor man and Joe Schmo's net worths/annual budgets, respectively). Ok, so if that is a thing and it can be broken down like that, I just want to know what kind of income this pastor has his hands on to begin with and why. I don't know of any pastors with private jets that don't have a megachurch and those are typically in operation based off of the prosperity gospel "model" of preaching, which is exactly what Christians should not be promoting to begin with. So let's find out which pastors have these jets and what type of preaching styles they are using.
Then let's couple that with some New Testament, 1st century church living, not the OT (not-pastor/prophets) who had it made, while looking at verses like James 3:1 and Hebrews 13:17. This "apples to apples" is invalid as an argument. I don't know one person driving a car worth as much as you said is the "average cost"...we're not all living in Cali, my man and I live in a city of almost 200,000 people. Respectfully, that's not the average cost of a regular vehicle for an everyday worker and not ever close to the majority of people in the U.S. live near public transportation (you act like only a handful of people aren't near any-for real you believe that?) so yes a car is far more a necessity than a private jet...
And if we are to blanket the country, are pastors not part of the average net worth? What percentage does their jet equal to, then? Blanketing is unwise in to trying to make a point for a person owning a car but not for the pastor who owns the jet.
What is this anyway? End of the day, if your heart is all about status and enjoyment don't call it necessity, right? No matter what you've bought. End of the day pastors are called to a higher accountability before Almighty God and their JOB is to serve others not themselves with their tithe and offering that is supposed to go to ministry, and if he isn't a Billy Graham type he doesn't need to be flying all around to begin with. Financial accountability and annual budget meetings should be going on in every church so they know where every dollar is going and can vote on that.
Pastors don't have to expect to go without unless it comes down to it, but extravagance should be kept to an occasional thing. The world is watching, and if we look just like them flashing the love of money, what kind of welcome to the heart of God is that? I'm fine driving my '95 Camry right now, fine with the same clothes that still fit that last one week that I've had for 4-5 years, fine with buying Asics shoes to help support my back, fine buying my kids their clothes at consignment sales, and fine cutting my own hair and theirs. I'm also fine with a Christian owning some nice things but not dripping in money. I don't see how you can feel like you are following the feet of Jesus to the lost and hurting if you're opting more often for funding your own pleasures than for funding one of the countless ministries that do what we are called to do (share the gospel and provide for people who cannot provide for themselves). I take issue with that-with desiring more money to begin with bc of intent of what a Christian desires to do with it, ESP for a person in a church leadership position.
This is such a Westernized Christian conversation.

  • @rayb96
    @rayb96 2 года назад +17

I just feel like for any Christian, it's just very unwise to spend any excessive sum of money on a jet, house, car, any sort of material thing. Even if it is well within means, and not a problem for the individual, the absolute cost still does matter because it is an absolute sum of money chosen to be spent in a way that can be judged unwise. I think spending money on self isn't always as innocent as we make it. Even for someone who is spending their own money, I believe that Christians are called to be good stewards meaning that money should never be spent unjustifiably. A Christian can use a private jet as a method of transportation, but owning one is completely unnecessary. Something Allan didn't mention was the enviromental cost of private jet usage, which is something a Christian should also be aware of as stewards of the earth. The overall cost of a private jet is simply not worth the benefit of usage or convenience. It is an extremely expensive and damaging transportation alternative that it would be wiser minimizing usage of. I think Christians and private jets are another topic that goes under the idea "Just because you can doesn't mean you should".

Jesse Duplantis uses his private jet to reach more people. I assume you're cool with that. I'm not intending this rudely either, but it doesn't matter what any man thinks is "overly expensive and not necessary," if God is cool with it it's cool right. Interestingly we see God is very cool with Abraham, Job, David, Solomon, Isaac, and Jacob all being ridiculously filthy rich. Job to such a degree that if he lived in our day he'd certainly offend many religious people today. Why did Job need all that cattle and property? The answer to that question doesn't matter, God was cool with it so it's cool. And Job was the RICHEST man in the east, meaning a man with a private jet-- who isn't the richest-- surely meets the criteria. Of course selfishness is evil, but God isn't against wealth and even endorses it.

@@rayb96 That's the point, you don't know what he's doing so you can't make an assumption about it being overly lavish (not saying you are). At the end of the day a man having a private jet even just because he wants to live lavish could also not be a sin. The only one who can judge the hearts of men is God and that's ultimately what this issue comes down to. We can't look and see a man's wealth and great possessions, which we may think are overly lavish, and judge if his heart is evil concerning those things... so if a man is advancing the kingdom and leading people to Jesus it's only logical that that private jet is being used to win souls which God certainly isn't against and we shouldn't be either. Saying that pastors shouldn't do something simply because they're a pastor and implying that it would be fine for them to do that thing if they were in a different occupation sounds like we're trying to justify lowering the bar for ourselves and everyone else who isn't called to teach the Word. Not cool.
We should all be reaching for the "teacher" standard of living and helping each other reach for that bar, regardless of what we're called to do, simply because we call ourselves Christians. All non-urban areas that do not have public transit are not isolated boondocks. Many people live in areas that are car-dependent. Comparing personal vehicles with private jets is not the same thing. I live in the Washington DC metro area, for example. Many of the surrounding suburbs have access to Metro bus service, those that do not usually have a municipal version that would bring them in contact with Metro transit service. Areas further out may not even have that, making them car dependent.
Personal vehicles are also a necessity for those who live in car-dependent areas and totally *need* a car to get to and from work. I think proximity should be weighted heavily when discussing this subject in the context of pastors. In my opinion, Acts points to a local church model. Based on that, I think it's problematic that the pastor is traveling so much that he needs a private jet for convenience.
One way that I think that It could actually work is if the pastor used their own private earnings outside of the tithe to purchase it.
Another argument could be "evangelism", which there can be some gray area, but from what I am seeing most of the traveling is made for "speaking gigs" of crowds made up primarily of Christians lol.
