Used to love radio 1 in the late 80s, 90s, 2000s. Now I’m older and have graduated to radio 2!

They were the Great days of Radio in the UK. I like you listened when I ever had the choice. From my school days listening to Paul Burnett running down the chart on a Tuesday lunchtime.

I first heard the "Playing The Oldies National Radio One" jingle in the seventies as a kid and that was my first exposure to BBC Radio 1 on fade happy whistle prone 247m/1215kHz MW which had Radio Tirana Albania cutting through the ionosphere every night after dark.
When it moved to 275m/1089kHz from Moorside Edge West Yorkshire and 285m/1053kHz from Barrow In Furness South Cumbria, reception largely improved over Lancashire and you could get clear reception of both frequencies 1053 kHz and 1089 kHz along the Fylde Coast.

That video definitely has brought back some memories for you & thank you for the insight. I Lived in Northwich & Manchester in the early '70s & if memory serves me right they used to finish the show due to this fact at about 7 pm?

They often closed down early evening and joined Radio 2 until 10pm with John Peel, and rejoined Radio 2 at 12 midnight for the final two hours of broadcasting when they closed down after the closedown news bulletin at 2.03am then silence and 440Hz off air beeps until Radio 2 returned at 5am with Radio 1 starting at 7am opting out of Radio 2 on 247m MW.

I eat, lived and breathed radio one in those days and was desperate to work there...I was on a few FM stations up north a long time ago but the desire left me when I realised what bell ends there were in radio existing as egos and nothing else.

Simon Mayos breakfast show jingles were better than some of the records! Especially the ‘here’s what’s happening’ instrumental at the top of the hour. I recall someone ringing in in 1989 asking him not to talk over it!

  • @eightiesmusic1984

Some good Radio 1 jingles and I used to think they were cutting edge in the eighties. Dare I say it, they now sound dated. I am biased because I think the station was fantastic but Red Rose and then Rock FM after the split had amazing jingles many of which still sound brilliant to this day. Notwithstanding the pull of nostalgia, the jingles out of Preston helped the stations punch above their weight in the eighties and nineties.

Love these jingles before a certain Matthew Bannister and Trevor Dann Dann 'The Hatchet Man' ruined the station, turned it into a 'down and dirty with the kids' spotty Herberts and Sunny D chavradio station.

You are so right there really too alas! When they took over in October 1993 onwards they really ruined it somehow. The way that from then until 1995 or so they cleared out all the best djs and that was absurd too!

My friend lives on a farm, and has said he's annoyed that he's woken by a cock crowing every morning. I commented that I wasn't aware that Steve Wright was still at Radio 1, but that it's easy to turn off the radio alarm feature.
