I simply use "Vray Mtl Material" to make water. Adjust diffuse, reflection, refraction and add a bump map too.
One Imp Tip: First make all the environment, apply materials (excluding water) and do lighting. When everything is done in my scene and the render is looking OK. Then start working on water material because water needs environment reflection to look good.

This series of yours has been helpful. Thanks.
Tell me, how would one get water refractions through V-Ray? Specifically, the undulating shards you see at the bottom of a pool? I found a tutorial for that, but it's not narrated and the video's one of these time-lapsed jobs, so even slowing down playback does not help.
    Thanks!

Many factors involved in this method. Refraction, reflection, ior, displacement and most importantly caustics.
It's extremely difficult to tell on msg.
In future I'll make a tutorials on it.
