Thank you very much for the video of your dismantling and cleaning. I agree with you, the inlaid gold nib is the most beautiful nib I've seen. It is a most beautiful pen. Thank you also for the history expose of the Sheaffer series of pens.
I enjoy watching your "resurrections." I have a Sheaffer Legacy gold FP with a "chevron" (I call it a basket weave) design on the cap and barrel that I got on April 20, 2021. It has a F nib, and is lovely to look at and to write with.
The original o ring was rubber. They hadn't quite come out with the silicone ones yet. A stunning pen, sir! Nice job cleaning it up! (Now to tackle a Snorkel. Really, basically just a few more gaskets.)
@@InkquiringMinds Easier than one might think. Big fan of the older Sheaffer's pens. The vac filler types are the hardest to work on. The ink reservoir is really glued in place and generally very brittle.
OMG, that nib! I “long for the day” when pen makers made pens like this. It rivals today’s modern pens. I really enjoyed the history that you presented. Great show Doug! Thanks.
Bet it won't be long before you get a PFM in your collection after this appetiser! My PFM collection (I - V) started after finding exactly the same Imperial Touchdown and matching ballpoint.
I remember watching my father extending the snorkel to ink up his pen back in the 1960s. And yes, that inlaid nib is the piece de resistance as they say in Cayenne.
While in Orillia, Ontario (Gord's birth and resting place), I played some GL tunes leaning against his headstone. I might publishing something if the video/audio isn't too terrible.
I have this model and it's beautiful in F, I would like got it in M or B to use as a signature pen but I still love it. I have a PFM III in gold cab and burgundy and I love it but not as much as this one. I inked my imperial with Diamine Aurora Borealis and I think it is a pair made in heaven. Thank you for the video.
It is great that you found a pen that did not need much work. What a find! The nib is of beautiful design. I do not have any Sheaffer fountain pens. That said, I will have to look for one. Hopefully it will be as nice as this pen. Great review and demonstration, Doug.
@@InkquiringMinds The price detoured me. I used to go lick the internet glass longingly at the Appelboom website occasionally though LOL I wonder what brand 18K gold nib they put in them now?? Also Did you see the new Esterbrook J pen in ebonite? I got the rose ebonite with a journaler nib yesterday. Can't wait for it. I love ebonite when it's done right. Been wanting a Gena Salorino Journaler nib for awhile to match my Josh Lax Scribe nib.
@@williamcatalano1762I hear someone mentioned Sailor made the nib for the current Sheaffer inlaid nibs... Not so sure but apparently Sheaffer had historically worked with Sailor before in their late inlaid nib models.
@@jorge23483 That is interesting. Sailor made nibs for another pen, but I can't remember if it was for Sheaffer or another pen company. I think Doodlebud had a Cross Peerless 125 had a Sailor nib on it. So that makes sense if Sheaffer sourced from Sailor as well.
I'm sooo envious of your find. I thought i'd actually found a sheaffer touchdown but the seller had swapped the head of the pen with one that take catridges instead of the rubber sac 😢. Fortunately i was still able to walk away with a imperial triump 2797 so it wasn't totally disappointing
Magnificent job on a nice Space Age pen - I personally prefer the optics of earlier 20th century styles but it still looks *oh so dapper* ! It's maybe a bit on the slim side though... says he who also likes his Pelikan Souverän M400 dearly (though the M805 is my slightly more preferred writing instrument). Especially the quasi-octagonal faceted design with it's stark horizontal orientation looks exceedingly Space Age - and not in a bad way! Best regards Raoul G. Kunz
I usually feel gold is too ostentatious for me personally to carry. I do NOT appreciate "flash" in normal situations. Thus my tastes tend much more toward silver and chrome and stainless steel. But this pen is truly a golden work of art. I wish you many hours of inspired writing with this beautiful instrument!
Congratulations on this successful and timely little complex restoration. A stroke of luck to have found this perfectly working fountain pen, which actually only needed a little polishing. Another Sheaffer with a beautiful design that you detailed. But you couldn't avoid mentioning your DV 2.0 again, coudn't you?😊
Yes, Doug, that's a fine pen indeed, a contender for the Desert Island choice. (A Silver Imperial is top of my wish list; just mustering the courage to say "yes" when the right one comes along.) Sheaffer's nomenclature system is more than inconsistent, it's more like a book of spells. What we need is someone like the "K" who catalogued all of Mozart's works with numbers. Cheers from The Dingoes.
You need the Sheaffer Imperial Touchdown kit for this pen. vintagepensacsandparts.com/en-ca/collections/specialist-repair-tool-kits/products/sheaffer-imperial-touchdown-repair-kit
What a stunner! You were very fortunate picking one up with a new sac, but it was certainly looking pretty sad to start with. My grandad had a Sheaffer Balance, and I've just lightly restored my dad's No Nonsense. I used to have a Targa set, but lost it many years and a divorce ago, so very little chance of rediscovering that one.

I'd love to be able to restore an old pen like this! It must be very satisfying at the end to see how well it looks.
It is!
@@InkquiringMinds You should give master classes in pen resurrection!

It is extra special to have such a personal story with a pen as you do with this beautiful Sheaffer's. Great find,Doug!

Beautiful. 🎉

Amazing find Doug! Brings back memories of my Father's (PFM) and Grandfather's (Parker 51) pens!
Yes on the PFM!
I love these old Shaeffers. Thanks for the video.

I like the one stroke filling. The new PenBBS touchdown is cool too.

I love Sheaffer vintage pens. This reminds me I need to ink one for my next pen rotation. It’s been a while since my PFM was inked.
I love your Sunday series! Keep up the great work.
Thanks so much!
It is not Schaefer (Beer) but Sheaffer and boy it is a touchdown! Great find Doug!
LOL!
Such a beaut. I almost bought the newest version of this pen from Appelboom. That nib is one of the most beautiful ones I've seen.
Those new ones look awesome but are so expensive. And I’m not 100% sure it is worth it as Sheaffer isn’t really Sheaffer anymore.

A little more complex than the ballpoint/rollerball equivalent but writing with that inlaid nib makes the effort well worth it.

No. I paid too much for it and couldn't sell it for enough profit to make losing it worthwhile.
