i used to have a 602. When starting up i closed the door with the handle down so the door wasn't completely closed. That initiated a draft that lit the stove really well and only than i completely closed the door. Now i have a 3 and 507 for heating and a rayburn for cooking. I gave the 602 to my daughter and son in law, they heat their whole house. All Jotuls are awesome!
Nice stove! I'd give my 2 cents as for how to light it from cold more efficiently: Instead of what you did, try to take those two first pieces and put them at the bottom of the pile to form a flat surface, on top of that lay your piece of newspaper, finally on top of the paper lay down i a criss-cross format a few of your kindling - a single broken down piece is not enough, especially if you had to use wet wood, I'd say 3-4 sticks of kindling (or a bit more if you care about getting to operating temp as quick as possible).. then light your paper up. This is called a top-down setup, we use it here in Europe, in a cold climate too - it help to establish good draft quicker and also warms up the firebox and prep the chimney so you get the draft effect in a matter of 1-2 minutes almost effortlessly everytime, the good draft will also take care of that "vacuum" you were talking about, which will light the rest of the wood in a matter of approx. 10 minutes even with the stove door shut
I have a 602 and love it so far. It is heating an 800 sq feet great room with vaulted ceilings so it takes a while to reach 72 degrees but it does. thanks
wow. so cool to stumble into your video. I grew up with Jøtul which is the most famous brand in Norway. We also have other brands like Dovre, Bærums Verk and Ulefos. Cool that our products have gotten so far as Canada :--)
OR...once you have the two "walls" on the sides, just put in a "ceiling" of many small pieces across the top, pop in newspaper into the "house" and fire it up. Done.
and when the paper is burned you can put another middle sized wood between those already burning "walls" and some more middle sized wood on top of the small pieces - inferno in few minutes :)
@@kovrcek We use cedar shingles. The low quality shingles sell for pretty cheap and can be lit up directly using a lighter without any paper. They generate enough heat to light up thinner logs. And, to be honest I like the smell of the cedar sitting beside the stove.
Im looking at cabin stoves. I think this is going to be my choice. Not to sound rude or anything. I do NOT know anything about lighting a wood stove but this seams like a waste of time feeding 1 stick at a time crap. Ive lit 100s of campfires and I assume my methods would work on a wood stove even better with NO wind and its got a draft. I would use 4 smaller logs and then break up 3 kindle like you did in a criss cross pattern with another larger piece on the top. News paper on top of the 2 log bed flat.
I was undecided between 602 and parlor stove ... I tried the parlor and I realized that it is a monstrous stove. super happy ... and consumes little wood. he is in bed of ashes. I heat a house of 100 square meters.
The screw holding the latch on the door loosens from regular use, but only takes a quick tightening with a coin every once in a while on my stove.

In my 602n from the 50's or something i use used motoroil and wood to start the fire. HAHAHA. why not? it works like hell. i have alot of cranky wood. it needs oil. lol. Hilsen Norge
It's about average, 3-4hrs for me. I only have access to relatively soft woods, but if you have maple, hickory, elm, or any other high density wood it would burn almost twice as long.

I'm pretty happy with my 602. No stove is perfect, but I can heat my similarly sized cabin well with it.
Try top down method. Kindling on top bigger pieces
What type of connector piece did you use to go from the stove to the 6 inch double wall? Thanks
Not sure. It came with the stove, which I bought used. I'm sure you can buy it from most stove pipe suppliers.
