    I'm really curious to know how this bed has held up over the past 2 years. Perhaps you can make a follow up video. Was it worth it??

  • @zianeshkasparen4358
    @zianeshkasparen4358 Год назад +39

    The sturdyness of the bed lies not only in 1 cabinet, but all the cabinets as a whole.
    Same princaple as united we stand and divided we fall. 😆

    Just a heads up for anyone who wants to try this, a mattress needs to have airflow below it to avoid moisture getting trapped in it and growing mold and bacteria. If you want to do this you will have to air your mattress or leave the storage area in the middle hollow and keep empty spaces between the wooden supports. It's why bed frames are not a solid block of wood, but have gaps in between.

    • @helenaquvang7705
      @helenaquvang7705 7 месяцев назад +6

      Exactly. Air too the mattress is super important 🌬️ or you will get a 🌊 in your bed and then a lots of 🐲 people will become 🤧🤢😵

      Wow I always assumed that was cost saving

    • @dnog1999
      @dnog1999 6 месяцев назад +6

      One could probably mount a slatted bed base on top of the cabinets. Would add a few inches but insure airflow.

    • @jackyhyurane7362
      @jackyhyurane7362 6 месяцев назад

      so the front big one , without doors would be fine , for the airflow
      connection plates would be better instead of drillng them together without it

      Great call out, I made another video with wood slats and additional ventilation: ruclips.net/video/QVU2aaBjoJg/видео.html

    Love this - one note, for an older person I would choose mostly drawers. Low cabinets are tough to access.

    • @ShawnCTech
      @ShawnCTech  7 месяцев назад +1

      That's true, but drawer cost more vs just cabinets

  • @cassie.minimalist

    This is the best one I saw! Not too high, with access to the whole under bed area, with no open shelving or sticking out handles. So good! If I'd ever move to a tiny house, I want my bed to look exactly like this! But with a headboard :D

    I had to watch this three times just because I liked the construction sounds. Plus it is the clearest and best instructions for a do-it-yourself platform bed with storage. Well done!

  • @emcarver8983

    Another improvement would be to use the IKEA bed slats instead of all that plywood. The mattress needs circulating air under it. Well done 👍👍

      Simple open shelving works too, in that location. Source: My ex and I did something similar to this with Home Depot drawers and open shelf units approximately a million years ago (circa 1990.) This build is much nicer, though. We just laid a giant piece of plywood- custom cut at HD - on top of our units. We bought some extra cubes to put in the middle to provide support, and just didn’t use the center area. Again, this build is superior. More work, but far superior results. Very nice!
      PS: We used some of the rug anti-slip mats both under and on top of the plywood, to keep the board from slipping on the cabinets, and the mattress from slipping on top of the board.

    As a seasoned builder of IKEA cabinets, i would recommend that all of the assembly is done first. Getting into tight corners and bending to such a degree is very difficult and painful, when you get older. Fabulous job 👍

    Great work my man!
    Simple tips that could save others some heartache:
    Mark the drill dept with a piece of tape on the actual drill.
    Clamp together the cabinets before screwing them together.
    If your plywood has surface damage, ask the store for a reduced prize and demand it if buying the nicer ones marked "interior plywood" or something like that.
    Sidescrew the foundation and use the brackets to anchor the cabinets instead. Regular wood is much more forgiving that IKEAs particle boards.

    I was fascinated, watching you, build your platform bed. I know I could never do this, but I would love to have that bed. I’ve been shopping platform beds on Amazon and there is none as nice as yours. The secret space in the middle is ingenious. If I could show your video to a Handyman and have them build it, I would love that as well. You are so smart! Your bed is fabulous.
