In the country, students experience the effects of trauma and stress (direct or indirect). These can really manifest in the classroom as problem behaviours. Now we can hypothesis that those behaviours can be: to obtain something tangible, escape, avoid something or just to get rid of some stress. And some of those problem behaviours are really students expressing a need for help. Problem behaviours do affect learning and teaching time. Affected are the students (they may be on suspension), their classmates, parents (when they have to take time off from work, come to school and treat with the effects of challenging behaviours displayed by their children/teen). And yes, the teachers are also humans who have their own experiences and concerns, which when coupled with student challenging behaviours can feel like a heavy load. Here is where a deeper dialogue needs to happen, between students and teachers, teachers and teachers; and parents should not be left out as well. Sometimes a parent can feel like they are only contacted when their child is involved in breaking the school rules, but when the child is being a ‘good human’ they are not contacted and praise for their efforts on the home front. Good discussion teachers!!!
