Bach's music has the perfection of a crystal. Structured with a mathematical precision but like a crystal its beauty lies in the way it refracts the light.
That's because Bach's music came directly from Heaven. There is no precedent to his or any of the composers who composed during his lifetime. It was simply a gift to humankind from above.
Many tempos are possible. As much as I enjoy Lipatti and Hess, it is at this tempo that the music is best illuminated to me: ruclips.net/video/WUo7tQOvapE/видео.html
What a divine vibration of sound, Bach must've loved Jesu so much to turn his inspiration into this masterpiece not to mention how exquisitely played by a master pianist.
Praise be to God for sending Jesus to this world to be our Joy and Peace. I have always have so much admiration for Bach's anointing in Music to Glorify the most high so this exceptional music from Heaven! It is a gift from God so know one can boast! and as Bach said before: Music is honor to God and Joy of man's desire. Amen.
This is beautifully played. Several pianists have played this, however. There is something about Dino Lipatti's version played at his last concert that is unworldly like he knew that he was about to see the face of God.
I so enjoy listening to and watching this young man play this beautiful piece of music. The music is among my favorites of all time and it was what I walked down the aisle to when I married my late husband. It will forever be played in heaven.
I think the melody is simple but it is never boring me. Why? Because I can feel various emotions through his delicate touch. From time to time, I visit here, listen to his play, and question to myself "How can he express such a rich emotion through such a simple melody?" I'm looking at his hands moving smoothly on the piano. Marvelous
Greatest piece of music ever composed . Exquisitely performed . The eternal universe can be felt in this piece . And these words are insufficient to describe the beauty !
This is a beautiful rendition. It is very brave indeed to tackle the piece so slowly - but in doing so, Goldstein gives it an ethereal, other-worldly quality which befits both the composer and, more pertinently, the subject-matter. There are good quicker performances out there - the one by Sandra Wright Shen is worth checking out - but Goldstein's is magical; and my favourite.
+andrew hall Not Brook but Ocean should be his name. - Ludwig Van Beethoven ("Bach" is the German word for "brook") Now there is music from which a man can learn something. - W. A. Mozart (on hearing Bach motets in Leipzig)
I couldn't play this - not because I can't play the notes but because the phrasing with the thumb and other fingers is so difficult to pronounce - perfectly done!
Given that it's the greatest 3 and 1/2 minute piece of music ever written, and that all versions - in their own way - are created equal (some may disagree with me) one of the many things that struck me in this recording is ; He got the Myyra Hess transcription without sounding like it has hiccups. This has the best of both worlds. :)
***** thanks for the validation:) Ironically Myra Hess plays with what sound like (in my opinion) sound like hiccups to me that I feel as disturbing the basic flow of the piece. And Goldstein is playing Hess' s arrangement! I guess I'm just a Philistine for having a problem with Hess's performance regarding the hiccup. However Hess is still far above Goldstein and among the best renditions/arrangements. As I listen more I'm getting used to what I originally complained as the Hess hiccup.
His hands and ears respect and give voice each phrase. There's character here, whole personalities that can rise, speak, and return to the heart of the piano, and the heart of the man who plays it, a language its own. And now it's yours, the sweet joy and the small fury with no crash, and the bright return home.
yeah, bringing out those accents in the leading melody pulses yet keeping the rest light and floaty there's a way to play this, ignore the hard accents of the melody in the middle, and still be beatuful in its own right but that extra layer of accentuation (and syncopation) elevates it from 2 to 3 voices on what still are only 2 limbs, and it's a make it or break it kind of thing, if you don't get it at least a little bit right, you may aswell not do at at all, and leave it out for the 2-voice version, it sounds very abrasive very quickly when now i'm a sucker for darker sounding pianos like the bösenforfers, they can mask quite a bit in resonance, but on a bright piano with a strong attack that triggers without too much physical effort, this is crazy hard to get right
We got married to this My dear friend headed the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music for many years, I told him our wishes, trusted him to do right by us and with me sobbing like a weirdo on my dad's arm, this was played live while I walked to join the love of my life. I still cry hearing it. So many happy blessed memories and love how skillfully and masterfully this was played. Thank you
That's it! Bach, Hess and Norman. You got it - the three of you. I am literally weeping with joy at the beauty you've brought forward. Thank you. Thank you.
I have always loved this piece ,, I think that Mr Goldstein does a very good job . I happen to also love Dame Myra Hess and Dinu Lipattis version . This is music for the soul .
It is inspirational! Phenomenal and the meaning behind this music is incredible. Can you just feel it? it makes me feel closer to God and feel like crying because I have fibers in my soul that music like this touches.
My mother played this to me on more occasions than i dare to remember. She tried to teach me how to play but unfortunately I was a lost cause ! Just beautiful !!
This is just beautiful. The composer fr this needs some major credit as this should be the theme song of a peaceful life and of heaven. Really shows the beauty of classical music and the piano.
Many years ago, I heard Alon Goldstein perform a Rachmaninoff concerto live. Jesu was his encore. Inner voicings wafted up so clearly and beautifully. Incredibly touching and mesmerizing... could have heard a pin drop in the massive hall.
this (and perhaps every) piece by Bach actually hard to consistently play in the correct tempo. I called this the best video I've found on youtube to perform this piece. the phrasing and intonation just perfect. In every sustain he allows a break to make the notes really spread into the room.
Finally an interpretation of this master piece at the right tempo! Thank you

Total perfection. Played with reverence and devotion. This is as good as this piece will ever be played on this side of eternity.
I completely agree. I've yet to hear a rendition as beautiful as this one.
Indeed.
Very nice interpretation…second to Daniel Tritonov.
Pretty much; you may be right.
Piece, please, not song.
One of the most sensitively played versions of this magnificent piece! It brings peace to my soul!
IN FULL AGREEMENT TO THAT!
@@benoitdurand1613 me too.
Incredible, without words. Soft touch on the keys when needed, firm touch on the keys when appropriate.
The notes and melody are actually so simple. But it takes an artist like this to achieve perfect legato and make the piece sing. 👏
And a good piano, too. This Steinway sounds amazing.
Не простые.
Its not simple. Your being simple
Steinway is an instrument!!@@BleedandRise
A Steinway is an instrument, not a piano. Take that from the son of one who built them.

Agreed!
I like the way he plays it. Effortless and smooth.

A man of such accomplishment wrote a devotional piece with enormous humility.
I finally get it. You should play this like a child in awe.
Everyone plays this too fast but this tempo is perfect.
I think the same.. but try the Shiro Sagisu version covered in the anime "Neon Genesis Evangelion". to me it's almost perfect
Influenced by Dinu Lipatti. The guiding light.

My wife and I had this piece playing in the church just before our wedding. Listening to it brings back a lot of beautiful memories.
