I thought the Civil War movie was mostly boring, with decent grounded action and performances. I've seen quite a few reviewers say that it isn't political or something along these lines when it blatantly is.

It’s obvious most of these reviewers have not served in the military, do not have any experience in war fighting because their reviews are all based on childish superhero movies that they grew up on instead of being in a foreign country and being looked at and shot at just because you’re an American. This movie is just a movie however there is a major message in this movie and that is, war is really hell and it’s not something that we should glorify and it’s not something that we should ever hope for. Stop trying to analyze it like you’re watching some stupid superhero movie and analyze it like you’re watching the international news every day because the events in this movie might be closer than some of you naive souls think.

I'm assuming this is directed at me and sure the message of war is bad is what the movie wants to get across, but as a movie and not a documentary or something along those lines, it is really uncompelling. I'm not going to praise a movie for a message that everyone agrees with when there isn't really any nuance, explanations or character development. It doesn't even really serve as a warning since there is no clear cause or ideology associated with the war.

@@filthycasual69not you specifically. My comment resulted from numerous reviews that I’ve seen. I value anyone who takes the time to break down their experiences and feelings with movies they watch because we all have a right to do so.
Sometimes we active and former military guys are the worst reviewers as we tend to critically look at war movies based on our experiences and how we think things should have been portrayed and that’s not ok either.
Your review was as fair as the next one and I, like others see the value in the movie’s message while others don’t which is fine too.
Afterall, we’re chatting about a movie.
I appreciate you standing by your convictions as more Americans need to do the same. Thanks for letting me comment on your channel and keep up the great work!

@Corvetjoe1 thanks. And it sounds like you've served, so thanks for that too. I have a lot of family who've been or are currently military so I get where you're coming from, at least to some degree. I'm not sure how much control we have over the lens we view stuff through, especially the closer it hits to your own personal experiences. I think it's interesting though that it sounds like you've seen reviewers who, from what you said, it sounds like are glorifying it almost. I think that was literally the one clear message of the movie, was that it shouldn't be glorified. So that's kinda wild to me.

Many people don't understand why the director decided to create a fictional alliance between California and Texas. The reason was that he didn't wanted the people to identify the rebels with the left or the right, he just wanted to show how a dangerous a polarized society is, and how fast everything can escape from our control. Many people that have live a civil war in their countries say that they didn't see it coming until it happened.

Replace them with context as to why the country is at war would have been better. I’d rather be shown the atrocities then told about them in a car ride. And as a guy who does the occasional larp session at the flat range I can say all of the combat is a heavy larp. I've only seen the film once, but I don't recall hearing anything about the details of the Antifa massacre. So far as the movie left me to consider, Antifa could have been the killers just as easily as the victims. As a libertarian, trying to view it without siding with a particular team in the D/R sense, I thought it did a good job. My biggest issue, as I deal with in daily life as I have for the past 20+ years, is that the film doesn't identify any unifying philosophy against the current regime. Granted, a growing number of people are dissatisfied with the status quo, but they're divided by tangent issues: race, sex, class,...it only serves the unified elite. But goddamn if you can get people to actually read or even listen to the works of the Enlightenment period that trickled down to create the fire that birthed this great nation. I'd give my life to make this nation what it was meant to be. I just wish that it was that easy- and that modern Americans deserved the sacrifice.

10:00 is on point 😂 "It's a f***ing civil war." I'm definitely not a fan of the conservative white guy tropes. What the Antifa massacre was and who killed who was ambiguous. I think to a degree it was critical of journalists who also seemed unconcerned with humanity and more concerned with getting a quote, getting the picture etc. I thought the sniper scene was great, I thought that was the most elemental and apolitical scene. "No one's giving us orders man. Someone's trying to kill us. We are trying to kill them." The airstrikes on American citizens thing said about the president could have been an Obama comment. I don't think it's as partisan as you think it was but I liked your review.

I dont mind disagreeing at all. I keep hearing people say the antifa massacre thing was ambiguous but as far as I can tell/remember, typically massacres are named after the victims right? I.e. Boston massacre, Armenian genocide, etc. I would agree it was critical of journalists except Alex garland calls them the heroes of the movie in interviews. Lol. I posted the link in another comment somewhere on here. The sniper scene probably was the best scene and I thought about the drone strike thing too but I think I'm just so skeptical of Hollywood it's hard for me to give them the benefit of the doubt with anything. Agreed that the movie is made from the left's perspective, which is inevitable, since the writer director and most of the people in charge of creating the film are on the left. The effort was made to stay neutral, which is fine. The Jesse Plemons scene makes sense because there are literally people like that. Not a majority, not even a huge group, but enough that in a chaotic civil war, you're likely to run into them. Again, it's fine, nothing to get bent out of shape about.
And I'd counter the point about the ending being a leftist wetdream about killing Trump. I mean, yes, there are some extreme leftists who would love that. They're psychos. The movie doesn't paint the journalists as the moral authority, especially with how they act under combat, endangering others around them. They are shown as people devoted to their craft/occupation, at the expense of everything else, which can be call dedicated, but also selfish.
The "good guys" are clearly shown to commit warcrimes, and the killing at the end is not shown as a "yay good guys won!" moment, but rather a chilling scene lacking in humanity. If anything, it's showing that the "good guys" aren't good either.
I definitely get that if you WANT to get cheap culture war references out of it, you can. In fact, from both sides. If you want to take offense that you are being made fun of as a leftist, you can; if you want to take offense as a rightist, you can too.

    • @filthycasual69
      @filthycasual69  Месяц назад +2

I understand what you mean. As far as it being left bent because the creators are left wing, I would concede I don't know if they view their worldview as the norm or default or they were consciously like oh let's make sure we get this in here. Obviously I have no way of knowing.
I think I'd be more open to the idea of it being neutral if they made a point to portray left wing or the extreme left as bad in the way they do things associated with the right. They obviously have mindless gun violence, the brutal stuff is in small towns, the jesse plemons scene, all things associated with the right. They reference the massacre of antifa, which makes them sound like victims. If they had said something similar about a right wing group, id go ok theyre at least trying. The only peaceful places we see are cities like Pittsburgh and I cant remember where the refugee camp was but it was peaceful as well just displaced people. And the mindless violence, torture, and racist executions are in rural areas. You could say I'm reading too into it but broadly speaking, if you make a movie about a civil war in America, I assume you know cities are generally left wing and rural areas generally right.
And as far as the killing trump, that's why I said leftists instead of leftwing or democrats. But I know people just throw around labels. If it wasn't for everything else, i wouldnt have thought that necessarily. And I agree the journalists don't show any morals but the movie thinks they are heroes and Alex garland refers to them that way in interviews.
That final scene I could see interpreting it the way you did but when the main dude is smiling and celebrating getting his quote and all the journalists are celebrating its going to be an execution not arrest, I just didn't see it that way.
And I avoid culture war stuff as much as I can as long as it doesn't impact the story but I think this movie hinges on people thinking the culture war will turn into a civil war so it is unavoidable. If the movie was in a made up country, would anyone care about it? I expect people would be way less interested. I keep seeing people say if you want to view it as right wing you can but never really giving examples.

I definitely do not see this movie as glorifying journalists. It basically shows them to be ammoral adrenaline junkies. As far as the political bent it really isnt that extreme. The only thing that did cross the line was the antifa massacre but even with that we arent explicitly told what that meant. Both sides are shown commiting war crimes throughout the movie. I felt like it was fairer than you are giving it credit for. Because the civil war itself was meant to be more of a set piece for the story around war journalists. Not leaving office after two terms is a lot different than not leaving after losing an election. Killing journalists is a characteristic of right wing and left wing dictatorships. This movie is not "war bad journalists good". The journalist characters are in a lot of ways the least sympathetic. They treat this nasty conflict as a means to climb the social ladder or make beautiful art. They're careless, entitled, arrogant and still kind of badass though (until they get domed for making stupid choices). My takeaway was that these characters were the real reason for the conflict in the movie. They spent the last 10 years pumping everyone up to go kill each other.
Any "left-wing" bias in the film comes from the undeniable fact that most of the truly despicable actors in a modern US civil war would 100% be right-wing militias. The "left" in America is disorganized, unfocused and in no position to do any ethnic cleansing. Meanwhile, there are at least a half-dozen right-wing groups that openly brag about wanting to string up alphabet people and race-traitors from the nearest lamp-post.

As far as the "journalists as heroes" argument goes, while I can't find anything where Garland specifically says that, I think what that would mean is that the characters are the protagonists of the story, not that they do anything particularly heroic. I seriously doubt the unlikability for the main characters is "incompetence" on Garland's part.

I posted the interview in another comment somewhere in these a while ago where he refers to them as the heroes of the movie. I'm sure he is capable of differentiating between protagonists and heroes, so im taking him at his word. Also, in the movie the young girl refers to kiersten Dunst as her hero and a huge crux of the story is how brave they are for doing what they do and how important journalism is. So I think the intent is pretty clear within the movie as well as outside of it.
I don't want it to be a different movie, I wanted it to be a good movie, which I don't think it was.

      @@filthycasual69 yeah, no.
First off you absolutely discuss your politics in this piece whether you realize it or not. I totally respect not wanting to get into a "left vs. right" debate here, but I brought it up within the context of the movie which, like it or not, is going to spill over into rl due to the subject matter.
And while I'm sure Garland said the journalists were the heroes or whatever, a closer reading of the actual material in the film is a much more layered and nuanced message. You're right that the characters themselves think they are brave and noble (and say it a lot) but even a novice media consumer can understand the difference between text and subtext. The protagonists are constantly making stupid, selfish choices and the only "heroics" they engage in are a pair of hollow self-sacrifices so that the rest of them can continue on their ill-conceived mission to get a scoop. A.G. has a proven body of work behind him so I'm confident this is not bad writing, but an intentional choice. The message to me is clear: journalism is in a rotten and dangerous state right now, and unchecked it will lead us into misery.
the "go write a better movie" barb was not a snarky attempt to invalidate your right to criticism. I think you are more interested in a story about the internal politics of a modern US conflict, as the main gripe you spoke about is the movie's lack of definition in that realm. You're obviously intelligent and can write a script and I would be interested in your more straightforward political content so feel free to link it and I'll subscribe to that channel.

@theodoremcdonald9471 I haven't seen all of his work but I really liked ex machina and have heard good things about 28 days later. People seem mixed on his other stuff from what I hear. It's interesting you're saying it's layered and deeper than I'm giving it credit for because i watched about a half dozen reviews from other youtubers before I watched the movie (which I normally don't do) but every single one talked about how they thought the movie really made it clear how important journalists really are and similar statements in that vein. This is kinda weird because I actually agree with your interpretation about the journalists in the movie but not that it was the movie's intent. The interviews I'm referring to are his with the AP and Jake's Takes (on youtube, both about 7 minutes). In the AP one he calls journalists as important as doctors and goes into great detail about their importance and his reverence for them. Maybe you're right and he is criticizing something he reveres (like Orwell with 1984) but I don't believe it to be the case.
As far as my own bias slipping in, maybe that's the case but in the majority of things I talk about media wise, I only talk about it to the extent I believe it impacts the movie. This movie, where he and it are both deliberately vague and believe it to be neutral was really the issue I had. If he had called it Trumps Civil War and had the proud boys as the villains, I honestly wouldn't have cared. Lol. Just as an aside, this and my Ladyballers video (the Dailywire movie) are my 2 most political I've done and last I checked, Ladyballers was my most disliked. (Might be Godzilla x Kong now). But I'd still concede I have my own beliefs and I'm sure they seep in sometimes.
As to what I'd do to change this movie, I actually think it's broken at the premise. He wanted neutral political journalists but then used the back drop of an American Civil War which is super divisive. If he wanted the politics to be neutral to focus on the journalists, I actually think that could be done fairly easily. For example, if you're going to use real political groups (antifa) just use one from each side. I.e. instead of the antifa massacre, describe an event where a right wing group and antifa were fighting in the streets and the president massacred both. He refers to the president as a fascist in his interviews (can't remember if it was in the movie). Have people refer to him as a fascist in some spots and commie in others. We had the Jesse plemons right wing anti immigrant racist character. Have one of the encounters where the group doing executions is doing it to people who were "in the 1%." Those are all choices that were made and were more my issue with people referring to it as "politically neutral." Obviously a lot of people disagree with me though. I don't mind.
I also think it might have been smart character wise and maybe even world building wise to have the journalists have actual opinions and disagree, but he avoided that at all costs.

The movie is a leftist fantasy of themselves rising up to militarily destroy a fictional Trump presidential dictatorship and his fictional racist forces, but with a few things to try to throw a non-observant viewer off the scent. Here are just a couple of clues: 1/3of the way into the movie after the first fire fight on the wall of the building is painted a "W" with pastel "rainbow" colors. W is for woke as much as the "Western Alliance". Later in the movie during the attack on DC one of the female press said "we" (have the White House in our sights), meaning the press was aligned with the Western Alliance and not neutral. Western Forces are racially and gender diverse to a fault, and are meant to be the forces of diversity against the racists.

I unno about some of the takeaways you brought back from the movie big chief. I feel like A24 put quite a bit of effort into making the characters bland and generic enough while also deliberately avoiding(to a detriment to the film sometimes) political takes that it left a whole lot of room for people to come out with their own opinion. The only real stances I ever saw taken in the movie were Journos good, which... yeah, I like having news as much as the next guy, and that war, particularly civil war is bad.
    shocking take.
so shocking, that a group of 8 right wing gun nuts who went and saw the movie with me all walked away having a great time.
discussing it more with them, they all perceived the movie as a fun action suspense romp, and we all went in expecting it to be an anti-conservative hit piece.
I feel like the old talking point on good art really applies here - it should leave everyone who witnesses it with a different understanding of what it is and what it means.

There really wasn't much of a story at all. Journalist go on a road trip a few things happen, and then it ends. I was mostly bored. I never really cared about any of the characters, and none of the action (what little there is) made any sense. Everyone did stupid pointless things. You can have an issue with who the filmmakers have winning at the end, maybe you would have preferred the Trump-like character come out victorious, but I can't fault them for using current issues for inspiration. With conflict, they're going to pick a winner. They chose one. It just seems like one of those B movies where everything is sort of evenly mediocre. Mediocre cinematography, audio, acting, lighting/grading, CG... there's no passion or real creative vision to any of the scenes I've watched. Many of the movie reviews are by leftists who mistakenly believe that they are somehow in the political center. Therefore, everything that happens in this movie fits their world view. I am going to see this movie tonight. I am pretty sure that my opinion will be similar to yours but I will reserve judgement until then. The only thing I disagree with in your interview is that we are a lot closer to a civil war than you think we are. Would it be like the first one? Choosing California and Texas Is a brilliant move because you can’t call It off as a liberal propaganda movie or a republican propaganda movie. You don’t know anything about the presidents political stance neither. It makes the movie watchable for every american no matter your political stance. The conclusion Is that no matter where you come from civil war Is hell for everyone. Its uniting all sides on the political map around that fact. A masterpiece and a true anti war movie.

That's cool you enjoyed it. I think the concept could have been interesting but the world building was pretty non existent. I made this right after I saw the movie and thought it was okay but the longer time has gone on, I think it's actually a bad movie relying almost solely on the fact that people think we are on the way towards a civil war. But to each their own, plenty of people really liked it.

aw man are you just looking for shit to be upset about? not everything is the result of some wild liberal obsession with trump. Garland said he easily could have made this take place in England and was talking about Boris Johnson. and even if the movie was alluding to trump, what of it? We all saw how quickly one flashpoint incident can incite huge numbers of people in 2020, between that and jan6 it is a fair assumption that the premise of the movie is very realistic.
Good combat photo journalists are badass, they arent the anchors parroting the talking points from the parent company execs, so it seems like a stretch for you to find issue with that as some liberal thing. I am sure if you look up statistics, rural whites possess most of the firearms, hence why all of the more rural people they came across just so happened to be white. Wagner Moura and Stephen McKinley werent woke quota caster , they are good actors. Your opinion is your opinion and you are entitled to it, but I got the impression you were overthinking. A civil war in the US would not likely be this organized. I do think it’s possible that we see what could be defined as a civil war in our lifetime and I’m 55+. You just have to realize what conditions enable a civil war and it is when law enforcement cannot or will not effectively enforce the law on a widespread basis.
There are already cities that aren’t enforcing the law. New York will catch and release violent criminals but they will pursue political witch-hunts with extreme voracity.
There’s a tipping point where a large enough percentage of the population no longer respects law enforcement and finds the risk of being prosecuted for vigilantism to be low enough that it is no longer a barrier to actions that they feel are necessary, justified, or warranted.
Local law enforcement agencies are losing long-time, experienced officers and replacing them (if they can replace them) with lower-quality personnel that either don’t or can’t elicit the same degree of professional respect as more experienced officers could. They often do stupid things that cause mistrust and hostility from the communities they serve. Many police departments seem to have forgotten that they NEED the help of the public do effectively perform their jobs because they espouse tactics that are irresponsible and seem to devalue the lives of civilians: no-knock raids, shooting residents in their homes during “welfare checks”, performing unconstitutional searches and seizures…. It seems that the police are often more dangerous to the public than criminals - partly because the cops’ tactics place you into untenable situations where you are forced to endanger your family and yourself by having to second-guess self-defense decisions.
I wake up at 3 a.m. to hear my door being kicked in along with a discordant mix of yelling and see flashlights swinging around. I’m not a criminal, so I shouldn’t expect cops to unconstitutionally break into my house at 3 a.m. I reach for my pistol but then realize that if for some unknown reason it is the cops, I will be shot multiple times because that’s how they neutralize “a threat”. But if it isn’t the cops and they come into my room and shoot me, my family is helpless. So I’m in a no-win situation because of the unconstitutional actions of police. If I can be assured that I will be given ample opportunity to comply with the police then I will not face such a quandary. But they don’t seem to really want compliance by following the tactics of a hit squad instead of law enforcement officers that took an oath to uphold the constitution.
When the police are a risk to the public but not to criminals who they just release to victimize more people, there may come a point where the cops are actually a detriment to justice instead of a benefit and that’s when they will be forced to stand aside while vigilante justice takes place or they will be removed from the way.

      @filthycasual69  Месяц назад +1

I'm not saying it's impossible. And I know there's a lot of screwed up stuff going on right now, including the issues with policing you mentioned. I guess I'd just say I think most people are ok to sit at home online and whine but when push comes to shove, I'm not sure if enough people would actually be willing to engage in conflict like this. But I understand it only takes one incident at the right time for people to go crazy.

This was a trash movie. If a 15 year old wrote it I'd be impressed. Look up the original Civil War that actually happened. Even look up civil wars in other countries, including the very complicated ones where there aren't two distinct clear sides. There's still a clear context as to why the war started, and a thematic purpose for fighting the war regardless of sides, and how complicated the war gets. And yes, War IS complicated, but not great STORYTELLING. This movie is convoluted trash, while the war and President are simply ramedial in scope! There's no real story here. No real point. Great stories always have a clear point, especially while exploring a complex subject. This film sucks at it.

If the movie wanted neutrality, like it claims, they could have made it about a couple of extreme factions that 99% of people don't like. I.e. communists vs fascists or whatever. They also could have stuck it in another country. If the focus was journalism, they could have picked a fictional place to make them the focus. There are politics in movies all the time that I would call neutral. The empire in star wars is vaguely authoritarian, which 99% of people agree is bad. Voldemort is a racial supremacist, which 99% of people agree is bad.
