I used to play this game so much when I was a kid. I liked to pause the game at the start of a race, take the disc out and put a music cd in and then it would play a song while you played.
Just to let you know, the indy nosebose didn't work because you have to press the buttons sequentially, and hold them down, so it goes like this UP THEN R2, THEN L2 (ending up holding all buttons down). You're just doing indy's there (UP + R2). I'm guessing you're trying to push all 3 buttons at the same time, which isn't the way the game requires (though it never tells you this). If you pull off the indy nosebone you'll see the character tweak the indy, it's very obvious when you're successful, and easy when you know how
I really liked this game back then. If you learned the timing and the tricks it was pretty good for flow. Also, for the races the Alpine boards were pretty good.
As for 3 button tricks, You have to do the seperate Trick first, before holding down the extra button rather than do it all at once, since it can only register 2 buttons at a time. That's why it never counted.
Cool boarders 1 & 2 were a huge part of my childhood. I didn't like the direction it went with 3 and beyond. I used to spend hours trying to "grind" the mailboxes in the board park area. Had to luck out and get the angle just right. After hours and hours I memorized the exact spots to begin holding my rotations for flips. Thanks for reviewing!
11:26 - In R4: Ridge Racer Type4, a PS1 mouse controller gives *more* control to designing custom graphics. Might Cool Boarders 2 support a mouse controller in a similar fashion? Will have to pull it off the shrlf and give it a spin here in the coming days with a mouse controller plugged in.
don't know how the NTSC version worked, but in the PAL version you definitely couldn't play all the levels from the start, only 3 were available and you had to progress in competition mode to unlock the rest
Holding the carve button will alter your spinning speed in air. Learning that is very crucial to landing straight. Maybe it's nostalgia but I really, really love this game. Back in the day I bought an extra memory card to save my custom painted boards, and my cousin and I were super excited to see a burton board design he owned was in the game. Touching on the end of the video where you talk about stats not upgrading.....that is true, but there are unlockable characters with better stats. When I played the game as a kid my favorite was Boss because he was goofy foot like I am, but the alien riding on a disc was pretty fun too.
you left out the save feature was because of the unlock able characters. and if you press selected 50 times in or on the option screen you get high pitch voice announcer.
For the Indy nose bone trick whenever you have to push up and then L2 and R2 you don't click L2 and R2 at the same time you click up and then L2 and then R2 separately just in a fast enough sequence to where it's recognized. I have the game and always had a lot of trouble with that.
My actual childhood. My first game console was the PS1 (sorta had a Genesis too kind of) and my brother and I got Cool Boarders 2 first. We played it endlessly, but always fought over who would be player 1. The compromise was we'd switch every race. At the end of each day the controllers would be a tangled, knotted mess.
I loved Cool Boarders 2, the first level was available on a demo CD and I got more game time out of that than I did GTA5. The thing the review missed is that the Main Game is like a main event to test your skill, you're supposed to use all the different training modes to get a feel for all the abilities and boards and then bring it together in the main game. Also, BOARD PARK IS MY JAM!
You can actually turn sharper without having to press Square. If you press up while you're turning, you can turn sharply and don't really lose much speed.
jin isn't exactly for "expert players". it's just a tradeoff. he has a high top speed but sucks at cornering and tricks. yaggi is just the optimal choice for the competition mode considering it combines both tricks and races. he's basically boss but with all stats lowered also the turn at 9:30 can be taken at high speeds. you just have to take a racing line and feather the sharp turn. there are much harder sections in the game, especially on snow ruins
Really good review, this game has a huge nostalgia factor for me but a lot of what you said was true in an objective sense.. it would’ve been cool if you touched on the music and the announcer, I think those two things are big parts of what makes this game what it is
*Worth playing today??* What's anybody think of the PS1 system link on Cool Boarders 2, Streak - Hoverboard Racing and Trick 'N' Snowboarder (via the Serial I/O port - only available among earlier models of the large model PS1s that had the hardware) ? Am still awaiting my second PS1 to link to my first here but already landed pairs of the above discs for cheap in the last few years.
Been watching your videos for a long time. Love 'em. Biggest question: Do you write scripts for these? And when you are talking to the camera are you reading lines off camera? So curious
All the memories this was my childhood right here I never played cool borders 1 or any other made. I'm working on getting number three pretty soon but this cool border right here I would be up for hours playing it on the PlayStation 1. I still have it I loved everything about this game the soundtrack, levels, and the announcer when you would mess up and crash he would make fun of you. HAHAHA YOUR DOING TERRIBLE!!!!!! WHAT ARE DOING??!!! 😂😂😂 Everything about this game was terrific My favorite levels are two I also like the one with all the trees that's number three. And then level 7 which was the Frozen level that one was really difficult but I loved it the music was epic as well. I also remember when you beat the game and completed you can race against your ghost they really did a good job with this game. I would pick yaggie everytime he's the best one Boss is really good as well.
Sweet!! Can't wait for you to review Pro Skater 4...that's my third favorite Tony Hawk game...btw, good review for Cool Boarders 2, plus, the voice announcer in the game is cool and funny at the same time...like in the competition, when someone pass you up, he'll say, "what are you doing?' and "don't be a wimp!"...like I say, he's just so funny
I disagree. instead of UEP systems, 989 studios produced CB3 and they changed a lot of stuff. The controls, level designs, presentation. They took away the edge imho. It didn't seem like the same series. I haven't played 3 in a long time I will have to revisit.

Thanks for reviewing!
hell yeah me too .. rodeo flip lip slide lol
I enjoy watching your reviews of games from this era. It was a different time for gaming and it's cool to revisit it.

I fucking love this game
COOOOOOOLLLLLLL BORDERS HEAR WE GO!!!
2:11 when he changed from old game to the modern game, i thought it was real life 🤣
Good review. I love coolboarders 2. The European version had the best music.
don't know how the NTSC version worked, but in the PAL version you definitely couldn't play all the levels from the start, only 3 were available and you had to progress in competition mode to unlock the rest
I had cool boarders 3 as a young kid for ps1, used to race my mom all the time, god rest her soul.
:((((( bless

I didn't know about the high-pitched announcer that's pretty neat

Cool boarders 3 was one of first games played on PlayStation
Anyone know which PS1 snowboarding game had Fatboy Slim's Rockerfeller Skank (Funk Soul Brother) in it?
Cool Boarders 3 is the best. Please do it. It has straight up Tony hawk controls.
Really good review, this game has a huge nostalgia factor for me but a lot of what you said was true in an objective sense.. it would’ve been cool if you touched on the music and the announcer, I think those two things are big parts of what makes this game what it is
i loved these games!
I didn’t play this one but coolboarders 3 was the first game I ever got and I played that thing to death. Graphics were much better than this one
Same. I actually got 2 games and a PlayStation for Christmas one year.
The games I got were Cool Boarders 3 and Test Drive 5.
Half-pipe was my favourite mode, I could play it for hours just for the pleasure of having a perfect stylish run...
*Worth playing today??*

Depends. My Ask Rad Rat stuff is all unscripted. These are written in advance but I don't read every word - I just have notes about what points to hit
Rad Rat Video gotcha. I just wondered! Keep up the good work my dude
how didnt you talk about one of the best soundtracks ever? also you could put the game disc in the computer or cd player and play the soundtrack
Could you possibly review 720? It was one of, if not the first skateboarding game, so it would be interesting to see what you think of it.
It's on the list! I don't own a copy yet, but I'll get to it when I can
It's up on the Internet Arcade on Archive!: archive.org/details/arcade_720

Rad Rat are you going to review Tony Hawks Project 8? Btw love you vids keep it up
I sure will. I have a few more to do before I get there though.
That's the best Snowboarding game I've ever played.
Short and simple
This game was siiiiick
you should do a review of skate 3 or the entire skate collection
I will!
Dude just found your channel, great stuff!!
I emjoy these videos so much :)
I loved this. Played heavily when i was young.
I'll go boarding to Austria tomorrow #hyped

Haha yeah I should have mentioned him. You'd think it would get annoying, but it didn't.
please do a review of cool boarders 2001 , it's soo much better , one of my favorite ps 1 games
Coolboarders 3 was elite! I remember it being a lot better than this one. But that could just be nostalgia
Played the shit out of the demo i had before actuallly buying it
i liked cool boarders 3 and 4 better, same with ssx :P
You should definitely check out cool boarders 3, it holds up better imo.
A few people have said that! I'll have to check it out
Agreed... I liked cool borders 2 back in the day, but I think 3 nailed it.
I disagree. instead of UEP systems, 989 studios produced CB3 and they changed a lot of stuff. The controls, level designs, presentation. They took away the edge imho. It didn't seem like the same series. I haven't played 3 in a long time I will have to revisit.
Airblade
Absolutely awful game that have aged terrible. Compare it to SSX Tricky that came a few years later and it’s a complete joke.
cool borders 3 is way better playing game
Cool boarders 3 is better!!
Compare this to 1080 for n64... just sayin... its laughable. Seriously. Just look at the gameplay comparison on youtube.
I hated cool boarders back in the day, Didn't even care when it got stolen out of my collection
yo brooo please use some new music or some itz really annoying dude, for real otherwise itz fine >)
