Very moving words..takes me back to my own childhood.I can feel the cold and hear that hush of a Christmas morning as he speaks those words..I miss my parents so much . Now here I am back to watch again 2 weeks before Christmas 2019 ! Oh, the sweet memories this brings .Socks on our hands because we had no gloves. Our faces red in the bitter cold as we made igloos and snowmen. At night we slept with coats on the beds . In the morning the milk on the step was frozen and birds had broken the foil top on the bottle.I miss it all .We had very little but we were mostly happy. My own kids are long grown and there are no grandchildren sadly...I will be lighting candles for my parents this Christmas Eve as usual. Sadly my dad died very young aged just 51 and mam is long gone too. The world is completely alien to me now. Anyway, Merry Christmas everyone.
Was the year 1963 with the huge snowfall? I wasn't born till 84, but my dad told me that the snow was as high as 6 feet accumulated against his house when he was 13 years old.
@iceteasahne hello, belatedly . Sadly still no grandkids... the world just seems more and more alien to me now. Especially in these ‘woke’ times. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of changes have been for the better but a lot are not. Anyway, time marches on I suppose. I am already looking forward to Christmas this year 😀 I hope you are too.
@@colindavid2078 I think that might be right yes. My memory is not so good now. Every winter seemed to be bitterly cold and snowy when I was young. I always remember one year it started snowing very heavily bang on Midnight on New Years Eve . I was leaving a neighbour’s party with my parents.. funny how certain snapshots of your life stick in your memory. Another one that always sticks of course is the red hot summer of 1976 .It went on forever or so it seemed ! Melted roads, burnt fields and hose pipe bans. It was scorching for months.😀
On one hand, I think the original version has a narrator who really grabs you with his deep nostalgic voice, along with a great, mysterious opening shot, on the other, Bowie's opening has the obvious novelty factor, and it's the one I grew up with.
The first intro is far more.... i dunno the words.... but it gives me chills more, and makes me feel sad inside, yet happy, if that makes sense? (yet I am 36 now, and grew up with the David Bowie intro).
Sad at wanting the past to return to you. Happy because the nostalgic authenticity feels like it comes from a place of true belonging for you. The original intro is where it's at.
The intro for some reason always makes me think of christmas time at my grandparents farm. The snow was always so deep and fell so heavy there. It seemed like it was a magical place separated from the world. Doesn't help that back then the men wore similar clothes to the guy in the first intro
I cannot believe David became the narrator of this film after Briggs wanted him to do the intro. I saw him as a flash with the scarf very popular icon he was since I liked his film layberinth as star character Jarrret the goblin king.
Was the Bowie intro shown in 1983? He is in his blond / Let's Dance period. Personally I prefer the original introduction...the sound of the crows in the winter chill ❤️
I don`t know for sure really but to tell you the truth when I first saw the Bowie intro I didn`t know that that person touching the rocking horse was Bowie himself. In fact I can`t remember what year it was when I saw the Bowie one for the very first time.
I watched this so much as a child and only after revisiting as an adult did I discover the man at the beginning is David Bowie 😯 can't believe I didn't know it was him. There's also a version where the intro is done by a cartoon of Santa
Lyrics - Walking in the Air - Song by Howard Blake - - - - - We're walking in the air - We're floating in the moonlit sky - The people far below are sleeping as we fly - I'm holding very tight - I'm riding in the midnight blue - I'm finding I can fly so high above with you - Far across the world - The villages go by like dreams - The rivers and the hills - The forests and the streams - Children gaze open mouth - Taken by surprise - Nobody down below believes their eyes - We're surfing in the air - We're swimming in the frozen sky - We're drifting over icy - Mountains floating by - Suddenly swooping low on an ocean deep - Arousing of a mighty monster from its sleep - We're walking in the air - We're dancing in the midnight sky - And everyone who sees us greets us as we fly - - - - Songwriters: Howard David Blake - Available on - iHeartRadio - Spotify - RUclips Music - Artist: Howard Blake - Album: The Snowman - Released: 1983 - Genres: Children's music, Pop - Other recordings of this song - Walking In The Air - André Rieu · 2012 - Walking In the Air - Aled Jones · 1985 - Walking in the Air - Celtic Woman · 2011 - -
When I saw The Snowman for the very first time as a toddler I actually saw the intro of the guy wearing a coat and boots walking towards a bunch of trees which is probably the woods.

You had to be quick with the milk or the birds would get it.
bangroad so true 😀

That one I grew up with
Never knew the second intro even existed till now. First one ALL DAY
The first intro is far more.... i dunno the words.... but it gives me chills more, and makes me feel sad inside, yet happy, if that makes sense? (yet I am 36 now, and grew up with the David Bowie intro).
That is EXACTLY how it makes me feel , the words are so moving. They pull at my very soul…

@@savedfaves Well put, I think you are probably spot on there. Thanks for that. :)

The 1st one is my life.
Same bro
RIP Raymond Briggs
wow, the words really draw your imagination in to the day that took place.
I like both these intros.
Always found the intro chilling and beautiful at the same time. Never knew there was a bowie intro at first I thought it was for the snow dog
In 1993, Columbia TriStar Home Video used the original intro on their NTSC VHS prints of the movie.
The piano playing in the first intro somehow has much more depth than the second.
So unfortunate we can't find the original intro version in better resolution, it really adds to the piece. Goose pimples.

No no no! Raymond made it! It was his! HE should be the one to introduce it
Wow! The kid in The Snowman was David Bowie?! Why isnt that on the 'early life' section of his wikipedia?!
I don`t know.
No, of course it wasn’t
prefer the original version, first one for me.

And the man in the fist intro is the author..

Oh and just to let you know I saw the intro of the guy wearing a coat and boots before seeing the David Bowie one.
