The most real dude I've ever had the pleasure of meeting and calling a friend. Brandon is a legend, easily on the Mount Rushmore of Smash, and he deserves every bit of praise.
The story of the melee scene in general just makes me so sad. It is as big viewer wise as a lot of other incredibly influential competitive games (Genesis had around 40k average viewers for melee for top 8), yet even those who have been in the game the WHOLE TIME are struggling. I remember watching HMW's stream a few months ago when he was going through some shit after moving because of monetary issues. It frustrates me to no end seeing how someone who singlehandedly brought and carried this game from its origins to the heights it is at now can still be financially insecure and struggling to make ends meet. I hope this video helps to garner some more support for him and spread the message, too many newgen people shitting on him in Twitch chat or in RUclips comments just because they don't know what he's done and his direct impact on the growth of the game. Amazing video man, thanks for your contributions to the scene
I wish we had more financial support too, 1000% I do, but I often wonder how many special people and wonderful things would still be possible if everything was regimented and ran through a developer and paid professional policies instead. Maybe we are better off, even if it's a struggle.
homemadewaffles is the spirit of melee indeed. I remember watching those smash tournaments when I was in high school, but could never donate money to bring other players from across the US to SF. so happy to see him get his flowers
Its insane to hear how hmw talks about all of this. He's so humble. This documentary is about him and he still finds a way to spin it back around and point towards the community. What an absolute legend. I've had the honor of talking with him briefly back when he hosted RR's for Europe. My homie Restlesswhale and I werr doing comms for that. I'll never forget how at ease he made me feel and how he truly treated us like equals and giving us a platform to do our thing. Big shoutout to you Brandon!
waff the goat forreal. always stoked to hear him on comms and of course love to hear him say “i gotta get to my pools, i’m still in bracket!” thanks for everything you do man
I definitely would not be going to my locals if HMW didn’t put on a big tournament I decided to go to, where I learned there was a local in my city, that I go to every week now. I’ve made so many friends, and have so many great memories thanks to him!
I remember during the height of the pandemic, I was in a really rough spot and what really helped me push through were the Rona Rumbles. It was my special moment of relief and bonding and hype. Thank you Brandon.
I've been guilty of overlooking HomeMade Waffles when considering the greats of Melee. Usually the players are front and center (for good reason), but thank you for shining a spotlight on one of the community's largest, longest-standing pillars.
HMW is the type of person every community needs, not just there for the clout but to actually get good shit done and get everyone (including himself) to enjoy it
Brandon really is THAT guy. One of the most underappreciated people in the history of esports but he would never ever say that. Good shit on shining a light on him, Phil!
Brandon is a real inspiration. Down to Earth, humble, goated, hes constantly bettering himself. Hes someone Id want my future kid to aspire to be like.
I'm one minute in and i know this is gonna be a banger, thanks for giving the waff some love he deserves it so much, not enough attention given to community outside the players
I actually thought he was just a commentator for the longest time, I just watched him self commentate while he played Ken (which was hilarious), truly a goated as fuck person in the scene, and a better falco player than I'll ever be
My Mt. Rushmore of SSBM for keeping the game alive and prospering over its entire lifespan would be: Mang0, HMW, HBox, & someone behind the scenes like Ken Chen the guy with long blonde hair, or even M2K for the substantial wealth of information he provided early history of the game.
@@nilpholan I know and have seen how much those three have contributed to Smash on all fronts for like 15 years. I just don't know the behind the scenes well and I think many of us don't. Which is why it's so damn difficult. We all KNOW that there are some tourny organizers and people that create things like Slippi, Anther, etc. but we just don't know who. I think if we asked people like Toph, Blur, or HMW which one or two people deserve that spot then they would know. But I certainly don't.
This is the shit that should be known about the melee community, long running deep rooted stuff in Melee and not the stupid shit i wont even mention. It's easy to fall in love with the videogame when you got people that give a shit this much in the community.
My only critique of Brandon is sometimes on commentary he can be heard questioning if he has good input or not. Like bro, you’ve been in the scene 10 years. You’re more an expert than 99% of the community. I’ve seen something similar with Moky once. He was doing a tier list and was getting a little defensive preemptively. Moky is a top 5 player in the world. His views are as valid as it gets. But nobody wants to trigger the melee know it alls 😂 But yeah it’s like 99% of the community looks to you. Let it rip. You’ve proven yourself as credible long ago Edit - credible* not creditable
its a part of what makes him a good commentator tbh, nothing puts people off more than a caster confidently stating something that just isn't true. Commentary can be inquisitive, a conversation instead of a declaration
@@nilpholan I don’t think he does though is my point (say something that isn’t true, like I can’t think of a single instance.) So yeah, I see him as being more concerned about it than he need be. Also, say he does the very unlikely, makes a mistake and says something that is blatantly inarguably wrong. If someone’s a Melee fan who can’t forgive HMW of all ppl, it’s my view that person is a nerd who’s opinions shouldn’t be regarded in the first place Ofc these are all my opinions. But I am very attached to them. It’s also my opinion that we love Brandon (on commentary and elsewhere) for his personality first, and his Melee knowledge is a distant second
The most real dude I've ever had the pleasure of meeting and calling a friend. Brandon is a legend, easily on the Mount Rushmore of Smash, and he deserves every bit of praise.
Shoutouts to Brandon and everything he’s done for melee. The game wouldn’t be where it’s at today without him.
Happy HMW's getting his flowers! Great work on this!
Me too, thanks for watching!
Dude I’m so glad someone’s talking about it. Redemption Rumble was the most fun I’ve ever had watching a tournament, without exaggeration.
total game-changer
It was so cool
He carried the whole melee scene in the darkest moments...

the way he puts people at ease is so universal, it's crazy
dude is a literal saint. so glad to have him in this community. and ty for making this vid!
holy shit the production quality is crazy thank you bro 🙏
hmw is goated
we should all aspire to contribute to the survival of this game even a fraction of the amount waff has

Tons of melee mini docs popping up recently and I'm here for it!
it's a good time to be a fan for sure!
I've always loved Brandon, perfect blend of geeky and cool, what a guy.
Dude deserves so much more recognition and credit. Mad respect to the norcal homies
truly one of the goats. the voice of melee. bemi was fire af. ty for the vid givin him his flowers
I’m so glad people are showing this legend the respect he deserves. Waff put the scene on his back so many times, every melee lover owes him big
Hoping this one blows up. The production quality is top and Yungwaff definitely deserves the spotlight
you heard 'em, youtube!
Thank you for heavily contributing to making our dreams come true and giving us new ones man
HMW is the type of person every community needs, not just there for the clout but to actually get good shit done and get everyone (including himself) to enjoy it
I used to watch his twitch back in the day. He's a real one
Great video highlighting a great dude. I love seeing good people succeeding at the things they love doing.
Glad to see this man get his flowers
HMW got me to appreciate and try commentary for smash and it's one of the most fun aspects I've had being a part of the community.
Phenomenal min doc, HMW deserves the recognition for the amount of work he puts in and is easily one of the melee goats
Holy shit didn't know he worked on the crt vault.
i knew he was a commentator and player but didn’t know he started TOing. what a guy, truly a behind the scene hero
What a legend, thanks for making this.
HMW deserves this praise, great to see it!
melee gained so much mainstream attention because of his commentary on wombo combo, absolute legend
The most insightful and hype commentator to ever do it
I love that melee has a non stop pump of video features that humanizes people from all over the community. Also unexpected Dustforce OST.
lifeformed is so good
@@nilpholan Only OST I've ever bought on Steam. It's on a usb stick mix that's been in my car for years unchanged.

No shot this actually has so few views it’s probably one of the nuttiest combo videos I’ve ever seen
haha I'm just glad it got SOME run, youtube is hard these days
Amazing video about an often overlooked part of the scene. Thank you!
the quality of this really surprised me, this a fire ass video

yeah it easy when it's 2-3 people you have to name, but 4 people is like legit impossible haha
