I totally agree about the music theory behind the arrangements. All arrangements are done for Voctave by Jamey Ray, the tenor who only has one arm. He arranges the music specifically for the singers. That's why the music sounds so good. He was influenced early on by Derric Johnson and his group, the Regeneration, who also arranged for the Voices of Liberty at Epcot, where Jamey worked. Jamey has also arranged some songs for Penatonix. He is a music professor for Rollins College. He is phenomenal and his arrangements make Voctave who they are.
I've always underestimated them, but this showed me not too. Tara, please react to Everyone by Sohyang, my fav song of hers. All what you said about curing depressions, etc, I feel that too with her

I'm a geek for you and your reviews and your evident joy for what you do, and I'm a super-geek for Voctave. But one thing I'd like to suggest is that you also give a shout-out to Jamey Ray for the stunning, complex, intricate arrangements he does for this group, creating overlays of voice that can sound like a complete symphony in the background. I feel as if a lot of their sound, including the flawless entrances and cutoffs to phrases/measures, is a product of his genius. Also, I love how you react to Kate's excellent, beautifully-controlled, highly-trained voice, but don't overlook Tiffany, who also is brilliant and soars to the stratosphere with power. I'm surprised that with you having reviewed pretty much all of Voctave's other Christmas pieces, you haven't reacted to their O Holy Night, with Tiffany out front. Talk about chills! Sandi Patty, with whom Tiffany has toured, can hit that no better. It's a masterpiece.

Until now, my favorite rendition was not Judy Garland's, but Katharine McPhee's rendition, Live on American Idol. But, Voctave has become one of my all-time favorite groups along with Singer's Unlimited and from Sweden, the Real Group. I must say, I have yet to listen to any song performed by Voctave that isn't over-the-top GREAT!!!!

It is a Barbershop choir rendition. Beautiful harmony, but nothing memorable. If you're going to take on Somewhere Over the Rainbow you should take a risk and not do what is expected. This is vanilla. I am a fan of Voctave, but this is exactly what I expected of them; safe but nothing special.

Tara if you really love Rainbows you need to look up The Most Happy Fellows barbershop quartets version. It would be listed as The Wizatd of Oz program. There are several versions out there but you need to find one with an older bass as the lion. That is the orginal championship quartet. I've bern blessed to hear it several times in person and the tenor Bob Hodge would sing The Look In Your Eyes on occassion. My wife decided that us what she wanted at our wedding and we were able to have Bob with a diffrent quartet sing that at our wedding thirty-five years ago. That song is a tearjerker and there are several videos of it out there. Love your reactions to diffrent vocalists but I definitely agree that Voactive is my favorate.
