FFXIV Content Creation: What Needs Improvement

  • Before anyone thinks it, no I'm not calling anyone out for "bad content" This issue exists in most MMORPGs, but since my bases is between WoW vs FFXIV's RUclips scene, this is where this video is coming from.
In the end, making interesting and exciting content for MMOs is probably one of the most difficult things you can come up with, unless you have the time, energy, and most importantly, have the mental readiness for failure, because a lot of it can, and will happen, but the end result really helps a lot.

I do have some thoughts, but I mostly do agree. The "sweetspot" for humor in 14 is very hard to pin down. Cant be too edgy, but cant be too clean, gotta involve catgirl jokes, cant be mean to individuals, but can totally bash an entire job. Its a very weird grey area. But some people do it really well, the one that pops to mind is Pint. I do think the pool is kinda limited though to how much you can do between waiting for the next big meme to happen.
I do think squares stance on 3rd party tools hurts content creators. I think its alot deeper then "3rd party good" or "3rd party bad", but it does get frustrating when things that are purely cosmetic get treated with the same animosity as straight up hacks. But until square decides to be more "this ok and this not ok" with stuff, which may never happen, its sadly just what it is. I do hope it gets a little more opened up one day though.
As for reddit, dont feel bad. 14 isent the only community to be weirdly overly hostile to content creators. Saw alot of it back in ESO as well. Maybe its just something with MMOs, but people get very weird about almost anything considered "outside work". I mean its even an ongoing meme to crop just the boobs of any fanmade/fanbought art of characters and post it on what its arguably the biggest meme subreddit for the game. I think overall with 14, when it comes to content creation, its both hardwork and luck. Ive seen people who put obviously ALOT of work into their vids with very little views, and vise vera. But the hope is that if its good quality, sooner or later people will notice.

I am the artist for a content creator named synodic scribe. He makes lord content and I hopped on the project because I liked he was making but the visuals were so shit that I forced myself in there. When I was trying to get into the game there was like no content. Not even easy fluff videos like Penutbutter gamer making videos on Story of Seasons/ Harvest moon.
It’s upsetting. I wish I could just listen to cool FFXIV content.
I can’t even fully enjoy the content I’m help making because I’m often too involved with the prossess. This is suffering.

I've honestly never been in a community that 'sticks to what works' as much as FFXIV. It doesn't seem that bad when you first start playing the game, but after getting recommended the millionth "What your character's race says about you" video *this year*, it's really apparent just how bad it is.
The only interesting time to watch FFXIV content is when a new patch drops. But these videos are only interesting because the content in the game itself is new, not because the formula of the video is new.
Though I don't want to just blame the creators for this lack of original content. A lot of them make really high quality videos and are definitely talented, it's just that the game is so focused on its set-in-stone story that there's isn't much for a creator to play around with. I stopped playing OSRS 2 years ago but I still watch OSRS content all the time because the game is really open ended; you're supposed to write your own story, set your own goals. In FFXIV, all of that is largely predetermined; its structure is closer to something like God of War, and what kind of content would you make for a game like that a year or longer after release?

This was actually a super insightful video and I think content creators of 14 could benefit from watching this! I've definitely tried to experiment but keeping up with guide content at the same time... can be overwhelming, I don't like to cover drama because I think it's overdone and I've always wanted to be a teacher so guides and educational content are always something that just interests me and I enjoy making... but there's definitely room to experiment even in that sphere, MisshapenChair does guide content but it has a certain humour to it that makes it unique! I'd like to be able to pull of something similar but in my own humoured way... anyways sorry for the wall of a comment, great video Sam! I watched this yesterday but just now is writing my thoughts, personally I am not an content creator but I have the same opinion. I tried to be myself on expressing my thoughts as a raider but it’s honestly stupid how scary easy it is to be reported to hell. I can personally say I dislike TEA but apparently it’s the best ultimate to everyone, or something like anything expressing themselves.
It’s almost impossible to express with a such a limited system as, in glamour, gameplay, content creation, ect. If it wasn’t obvious, I am very bad at writing thoughts but I wish people were more expressive in FFXIV or have more freedom. As I know lore folk who have such limited knowledge and expression use so much of their insight to expand so much more. But generally they’re the lowest minority I believe and that to me is quite an sad tale.
I’m pretty much rambling but great insight of the video! I just wanted to say bits here and there, even if they’re not the best written.

I always wondered why FF14 had such popularity but isn't reflected as much on RUclips or Twitch. I assumed its because people would just rather play than watch content, but I think you hit the nail on the coffin with this video. I wish FF content creators we're more experimental with their content, and wish more people in the community would pay attention to said content and bring those content creators up. I mean we are "best community" right...?

Theres no point in making a video that you dislike or one that didnt make you laugh. If you dont enjoy your own work, why would people react any differently. I always strive to make things that make me chuckle and laugh and just making things I enjoy. Idk I feel like content creationg should be a way to express ones own inner creativity for oneself.

I kinda just wish more people would post "vlog" style content for games, like instead of sitting through an entire twitch vod you could watch bits of a person's day in the game accompanied by overlaid narration, music etc. to keep the energy up. I really like watching let's plays and stuff but FFXIV just has so much downtime, especially if it's a twitch vod where the player is distracted by chat or focusing on the raid they're playing at the time.

When I started playing FF14 way back in Heavensward, I was always surprised to see FF never had youtube content like WoW did, Content creation has always been huge with wow, music videos, machinimas, animations, etc. But we never had that. Always assumed the tools just werent there, but when we had that surge of wow players trying FF, we had people like Pint and Captain Grim making videos in their usual style but just with FF. Kind of a shame weve just never gotten more of that.

I don't use reddit, so I have no idea what the climate is like there for FFXIV but when it comes to video content for the game, I've found what I enjoy the most are lore videos, shitpost videos, and heartfelt story videos. I've seen a very few RP ones popping up here and there and kind of wish there was more of those. No, not nightclub RP but the kinds about developing your character in this world with others, in-game tips and emotes to use etc. Likely half the reason I enjoy lore videos so much because it's so fun coming up with ideas for what your character can do within the lore. Like how the job/class system are NOT the only ones and abilities can be mixed and matched. Everything about aether is a rabbit hole of possibilities alone to the point where I've seen In Character RP debates on the subject between scholar/archon characters that devolves into fun shit flinging and clash of personalities.
Yea I would love more of that.

It's a damn shame that something like your trial video struggled to catch on too. I find those kinds of contents a lot more interesting to watch than mr. happy's weekly qa for the 1000th time, but those behemoths of the yt ff space will continue to gobble up because they found something that worked for them. I feel like even though the game has received a huge spike of popularity, it also showed how fragile being a ff content creator is. As always lemon hope this one is a banger. This video is pretty much why I started branching out from ff14 content and into other games that I like making videos of as well. The views aren't really there but in all honesty creative expression is much better than views (for me) but I get that there is a fine line between putting in a lot of effort and not reaping the rewards of it.

I've also had issues with the FFXIV reddit community. I've suggested quality of life changes in the past, for example: if I'm in the middle of a cutscene, pause the dungeon queue timer, and got told it either wasn't possible because of ancient spaghetti code (because these redditors are clearly game devs and understand what is and isn't possible) or that I was a terrible person for queuing and then going to do side quests to kill time and letting the 45 second timer run all the way down because I didn't want to back out of a cutscene.
I think it's safe to say the 14 reddit is just full of joyless assholes who hate hearing constructive criticism.

Most stuff I see on YT is immature junior high grade humor with click bait thumbnails. Its ok for most content to be guides or recaps on lore etc, we don't need fake comedians to be the bulk of content.
Also it is flat out untrue that jobs are a carbon copy of one another and using that as a reason for the content creation "flaws" is trash. I've said this to people before and I'm going to say it again here the jobs are not carbon copies of one another they just have similar abilities so that the devs can balance the game better but they absolutely play differently. This is the distinction that people don't think about and they just regurgitate what other people have said a million times like in this video.

To counter what you said on classes, having played mmo's long enough, it SUCKS when the classes aren't ballanced, because if you want to participate in certain content and you're a specific class, that tends to lead to more elitism where you could be kicked or left out solely because you played a less viable class. In 14, having all classes be on a fairly even playing field means EVERYONE is contributing and no one is being left behind solely because they're playing a specific class they enjoy. It's a major reason why I despise wow and other mmo's now a days, cause ff14 spoiled me with how balanced the game is and how I can play any class without worry. Also, they're not really carbon copies as every class in 14 functions differently and can have an easier or tougher time with specific content (a boss that relies heavily on ranged dps means a samurai/rpr/other melee dps will suck against that boss compared to a blm and bard, and we have tanks that function differently as well, the same with heals).

I will agree with you in the first part, but I will also say that the content at the moment doesn't really have much of a boss that makes melee DPS feel useless, since most bosses nowadays have a hit range bigger than what it needs to be, which is alright but it takes away from the risk vs reward

      @jish55 Год назад

@@SamTheLemonBoy the melee dps was an example (like how some bosses are just horrible for classes like blm that require a ton of moving, thus making blm's far harder to use in specific fights, or a boss that requires so much healing could make a dk a worse tank to use then a pali).

    Pint and Cider Spider exsist.
The issue is the majority of content creators are not creative or interesting. Not thar the game halts creativety?

I think Seto Kaiba said it best: We got 3rd Rate Content Creators with 4th Rate Creativity.
There's so much content creation not even attempted in FF14, but blaming the game is easier than to concede that maybe the creators aren't into really investing time to create great content.
Instead of creating- creators just are hitting the low hanging fruit. Most videos I see are just monotone Streamers commenting on something. No effects, no story, no setup. Just cut right out of their stream and upload. Ta-da! Content. 0 effort

Unfortunately, this is true, as I said they won't try to make something new, instead stick to what works, which is the safer option

2:43 Not to mention straight-up fabricating drama, as we've seen recently seen with a certain chair (of course, that was after this video). Everything for those sweet, delicious clicks. And honestly, I don't think that unfunny morons pretending to be comedians is a solution. But then, those fit in well with those who act like angry manchildren for "content" like Xenosys. Yeah, I kinda have my own gripes about FFXIV content creators.
However, I don't entirely understand your problem. Like sure, there's staleness and always the same stuff, but I don't get why you're making it out to be something that's special to FFXIV, when it's really the case for most fandoms (you even point out that "this issue exists in most MMORPGs"). Like Pokémon. Always the same Nuzlockes, always the same romhacks and of course myriads of videos about 69 facts that you don't know, despite there being hundreds of videos about the same thing. And more often than not with ridiculously clickbaity thumbnails.
Or D&D content creators. Worst feats this, best classes that and of course, lots and lots of horror stories about bad players and DMs. The recent OGL disaster brought a glut of videos about "non-D&D-RPGs", but most of them were dominated (if not entirely about) D&D-deriatives, making those especially stale.
Truth is, most "content creators" are hornier for clicks than half of the FFXIV players are for catgirls and once something has been proven to bring lots of them, they are very unwilling to break out of the tried and true formulas. That's why many popular videos look the same, in content, thumbnails and titles. That's also why reaction videos are so common these days, with the extra bonus of them being very easy to make.

there isnt a big crowned for casual mmos at least not content creators i come from swtor and casual mmo have a ton of player who dont care for hardcore content (like raiding not many ppl care for world first or raiders in general nobody would watch most raiders if they didnt have any personality there is a reason xeno is famous wih his reaction and bells and arthas with his beyond horny lv commentary but if they woudnt be fun to watch most wouldnt watch them ). the issue is ffxiv has good content ad most creators have there followings and ppl who like to watch them for there personality but the overall fanbase mostly care for the story and that can only be done it up to making videos of wht you love most of the creator also mix often from all of the genres of content creation.
you have so so many content creators for funny videos you have: ayvcatte, cheesegoblin, pint ,beneg,Wheat Tee,Rhaya ,Lucy Pyre and Kougaon.
you have your news or commantary creators or guides/top 10 they are the mayority of the creators : zepla, preach, xeno(sometimes) ,
The Nasty Namazu,Aitherea, Cole Evyx,Desperius FFXIV,Warchief Peebs, iamPlushie,Work To Game,Clarissa Eve ,SarahJane,Caer Esthar ,Cider Spider and a ton more.
then you have the housing side of content a ton of creators showing houses or review items for housing : Meoni,
    Noroi Housing,Uncle Vanzel and Ellienet.
then you have the rp creators :Alienne Ashford well mostly just him and Jocat
They oyu have the raiders or hardcore tryhards as we casuals say : xeno,Misshapen Chair,Jocat (well most for his guide for raiders),Mrhappy, arthas the horny ( i dont watch him all i know he is horny ) and others.
you have some music creators like Husky , lollia and others.
for the lore you have legendary content creators like : Wyrm Limion,Synodic Scribe,Stout Helm,Chronicler of Lore ,OJoSama(free trail god) and The Eorzean Archives.
you have some outside creators who do review of the game like lucky ghost, lazy peon and josh.
The truth is all of them have a fanbase maybe not to the lv as asmongold who is seen as golden standard but there are reason for that first being asmongold is a pure degenate he knows it and we know and liek a reality show it just a hook to watch it he livves on steak and potatoes and soda that nto a lifestlye most ppl should try to live for obvious reasons now he is also fun to listen to when he is right or wrong he at least has sometime to say however he is luck at the end of the day as much as he is a good content creator he blew up in the prime of wow like many did becuase wow is a game that at it peak was hardcore playerbase with some midcore player and the poor casual who never know a casual mmo before that . one reason wow content creators blow up is guide becuase you cant do raiding without it so ppl watch that the guides they see "hmm look a lore video well i got some time let see that " then they see a funny video and so it went on with ffxiv and casual mmos it different most ppl dont need guide or do any raids (expect for asian players they do them a ton but most eu and na player never touch raids unless force too) so there isnt a reason to go to you tube to watch a guide at bet you might see a ffxiv new expantion or patch trailer and you see other content creators react to it or do breakdowns of it and so theey get some views but overall most ppl play the game rather then watch videos about other playing it or arent in need for guide so it breed no intrest for it since it a causal mmorpg same with swtor and guildwars or eso most ppl dont watch the creators becuase the game isnt dark souls lv hard or has ppl intrested in hard content ot check guides they play fo fun and the story and that fine but downside for the content creators who all deserve the love for there hardwork but no muh can be done to help other then turn ffxiv into wow and hope ppl start watching your guides then or memes but that would kill any mmo today outside wow (it a reason why wows top players are commentary/ pvp or raid players since most ppl care for there opinion ) but that not the same fanbase for ffxiv at least not number wise .my 2 tips for any content creator is simple do the videos you like and second do not use twitter or reddit that goes to ppl in general stick to a safe discord .

World of Warcraft has way better creators. They have lore youtubers, countless mount guides, pet guides, pvp guides, hardcore youtubers, transmog competitions. And actually youtubers that play the game and manage to get views.
