I sold my junior prom dress. But it was so rewarding. The girl had the same reaction I had when I bought the dress. She started crying because for the first time in a long time she felt beautiful. That's how I felt when I bought it. It was good to pass that feeling onto someone else.
At almost 5’7”, I’m a half a foot taller than every other woman in my mom’s family. I’m also the only one interested in vintage fashion, so it killed me to not take anything from my grandmothers closet when I was in high school, because our measurements are so off.
@Ingoc it is, idk why people are so surprised when vintage clothes fit later generations lmao it makes sense theyd have similar skeletal structure and can have them adjusted 💀
I just think it's fake I mean you can't believe everything you see on the internet what normal people have the privilege to keep a fifty-year-old dress in reality she probably thrifted these dresses and made them to fit then made up the story also who goes to prom all four years that's kind of weird too
@@nervousbabbs2769 It's obvious to take everything you see on the internet at face value, but you're definitely over analyzing this 💀 plus it's not uncommon to go to prom every year if you have junior or senior friends
Same, both of my grandmother’s were forced to drop out in the 3rd and 4th grade, respectively, as the eldest daughters to take care of the rest of their siblings.
My parents town didnt get a middle school until a few years after they had already finished elementary school n were working full time so they both only went up to 6th grade
Honestly If you feel like standing out 100% go for a unique look. I wore my traditional cultural clothes to prom and everyone loved it. No one had anything like it and I didn’t feel overdressed bc there were ppl with literal wedding dresses on
yup, i went when i was a freshmen. but i think that was js b cus my school had allowed 9-12 grade to all go, otherwise i wouldn’t have been able to go.
Sure. It's a 3-4 yr age difference. Important for legal other matters, but if it's just someone that you've known forever and are friends with, you go so that they aren't dateless. Or embarrassed.😊
My mom grew up in a rural town with not a lot of money so there was "the one" dress for all the older gilrs. It was stunning. She had on long white opera gloves, and this fit to the waist, then poof, big tulle skirt. She looked like a queen. Its one of my favorite photos of her ever. Unfortunately, she has no clue what happened to it. A few of her sisters wore it and it was passed around and probably given to another family and no one ever saw the dress again. I would have totally worn it if I could.
I borrowed a ball gown from a local theater 😅 put my hair up as an homage to girls putting their hair up for the first time when coming out into society. I ended up looking like a cross between the 1940’s Queen Elizabeth II & Anastasia. I stood out but looked like a Queen without the crown & everyone loved my dress. 😁🥰😊
Everyone at my senior prom said I looked as stunning as a Disney princess and my dress wasn’t even that fancy. It was a simple crimson A-Line gown with flowers. No one had a dress like it and it proved that I didn’t need the glitziest dress to feel beautiful. I guess I have princess vibes.
@@theroseofversailles NICE!! Go girl! I’m just happy was able to be savy/smart & not have to pay sh%# to look like a Queen. Kinda cheated with a side hair piece almost like a tiara. 👑
I wore my grandmother's kaftan to a dance when I was twelve, it was so different from what everyone else wore, I felt a little awkward about it as a kid but it's absolutely gorgeous. A decade plus later, I found it again and got to wear it for a costume recently!
@RoraHope I honestly didn't think it would! I'm six feet tall now and definitely Wasn't the first time I wore it, but It's actually just really billowy and kind of a giant box with tassels and arm and neck holes. The arm holes were a little tight to get through, but not so much that it put stress on the dress. :)
I think you and your Great Aunt must definitely have a strong soul frequency connection as you seem to both understand fashion trends and value the artistry of fashion thru the years enough to take such loving care of your old dresses! Enjoying this! Thanks for sharing your passion with others!
I’m guessing by looking at the comments that it’s common for other schools to let all years attend prom, but for us it was only seniors. I didn’t even get to attend my school’s prom before I left (I dropped out, don’t copy me 🥶) and only got to attend my boyfriend at the time’s private school prom. Which sure, it was fancy, but god was it boring. I knew nobody there, and there weren’t many people because they also only allowed seniors and their dates. It was really awkward 😂 not to mention, my date was quite the bore himself.
For mine it’s both juniors and seniors. They are on different days. For both you can only bring one person with you, they can be in any grade as long as it’s high school, and they can be from a diff school. We have a homecoming every year which everyone can go to, but we don’t have any other dances like semi formals.
I wore a dress from my aunt for a dance. It was so gorgeous black off the shoulder with a circle skirt and covered in copper shiny floral embroidery. Still my best dress
All the women in my family have very different body types and my moms side of the family (who was more fashionable) was pretty bad at taking care of and keeping their old clothes safe. I asked my mom recently if her mom had any of her grandmas old clothes and apparently they were all sold or thrown out when she died. Her house went to ruin when she started to get older and didn’t clean anything, not even dishes we had to use when visiting, and her mom is a clean freak (understandably so) and never keeps anything “unnecessary.” I’m pretty bummed about it lol
Your grandma has good taste! Wish mine had her taste, then I would’ve asked to keep her old clothes. Though I do have my moms jewelry from when she was a teen in the 70s.
I would wear the junior and sophomore dresses now, and I'm well past school years. They are so beautiful! I'm sorry that I'm rude, but who would let their highschooler out in that red dress? You were falling out of it.
Im sorry, but this is white people privilege. Most immigrants and black peoples older relatives rented or had to sell lost of their clothes in the 50s and 60s. Some few wealthy families may still have them but i cant imagine anyone having anything other than a wedding dress.
I think it's amazing you and your great aunt still have all those dresses especially the ones from the 60s. I don't think my kept anything old lol. I wish they had.
I actually wore my mum' prom dress for yr 11 prom - and yup, no one had anything like it.
Awww
Same but 8 wore my aunts
Same but I wore my aunties
What year was hers
I was covid year 11 and never got a prom, even after buying a dress for it 😅

I absolutely love the 1964 orange dress, super gorgeous. I could definitely wear that. Then the white one, simple yet very elegant and classic.
I am OBSESSED with your great aunts orange number! The colour and the silhouette are amazing 😍🥰
Agreed! It's so fun and pretty!
I liked it, but I feel like it would be better suited to a daytime event than a night time formal like prom

How did yall go to prom freshman and sophomore year? Did you both have upperclassmen dates? Prom was only for juniors and seniors at my school
My Prom was only for seniors unless one invited you as their date
