This movie deserves to be appreciated as same level as Godfather , Apocalypse now and Raging bull , its true art but so underrated , both audience and critics do not pay attention to it anymore. It's not in imdb's 250 and Sight and sound's 250 , truly underrated

I can't fathom such person actually exists and even allowed to exist and operating in a way that I would described extremely Psychopath.To think this is the person who killed a children and still managed to draw many supporters to sign petition for his release. No wonder the Japs armies are exceptionally Brutal and Evil at that time
I would give that prize to BEING THERE. The reason why is that it did as much as this film, if not more so -- with so little to play with. Also an excellent story about loneliness and the stages of life, I might add. But this is not a diss at LE. It's in my top ten. It's been a crime that I've spent a lifetime waiting for a restored version of the original film, you know -- the one that won Best Picture. I'm in America and still not convinced it will ever be released here.

The new 4K version looks gorgeous. It’s a damn shame you don’t have the rights to digital as well. Criterion does and they allowed the cinematographer to create a revisionist 2:1 aspect ratio version of the movie which cuts so much off the sides of the frame.
@@davidw.2791 I never saw such any such claim. The 2:1 crop actually cuts through people's faces in some wide shots. There was a legitimate argument for zooming in on 2:39 transfers in the days before 16:9 televisions, but it makes no sense now.

this is another definition of a well-made prestigious grandeur film that the world just doesn't make anymore, the chills i got when I watched it masterful directing from the legendary Bernardo and great performances from both joan chen and john lone such a joke the film was appealing to the academy and won 9 ( deservedly ) but didn't nominated both the lead actors joan and john

As someone who has studied the history, I think I kinda can... the Emperor is to them like Jesus is for those in the Christian west. Its not just that he derives his right to rule from heaven, but that he is a god in human form. Am I close?

Those are old transfers on streaming. Criterion has restored the original aspect ratio on their 4K release.
