Traction and Wagon Maintenance Depot | Closed and Disused

  • This Traction and wagon maintenance depot opened in 1960 for British Rail.
In the Rail settlement Plan English Welsh and Scottish (EWS) took ownership of the site.
Later becoming a major repair depot for class 60 and 66 locomotives due to its facilities, the depot serviced all EWS’s fleet of locomotives in South Wales, after the closure of Cardiff Canton TMD.
It is not the intention of this video to go into detail of a recent accident at the nearby mainline, at points 9577B on the 3 July 2019
where two Network Rail Trackworkers were fatally struck by a class 800 bi-mode multiple unit, with unit 800021 leading. There were 184 passengers on board the GWR service . ALW Exploration sends Deepest condolences to all those affected.
In November 2007, EWS was sold to Deutsche Bahn, and in January 2009 rebranded as DB Schenker.
To be clear the areas visited are disconnected from any active railway and it is not part of the Network Rail system. The rails are disconnected and removed from the end of the siding and the depot is no longer active or part of the railway infrastructure.
There is a well used footpath through the former rail yard and there are no railway related no entry signage.
Under this new ownership a restructuring of EWS’s infrastructure ordered the closure of Margam Traction and Wagon Maintenance Depot.
In September 2008, the service moved to a nearby Yard. All servicing above a C-class, and all brake inspections, are now sent to an alternative TMD.
Today, there are many stored examples of rolling stock remaining at this Traction and wagon maintenance depot.
We are going to explore this huge depot site starting with the administration and canteen block then we will head down to the closed and disconnected track bed, to the rolling stock areas.

    Good video Andy
Most of those wagons are steel coil carriers , the hoppers were coal and the articulated blueish ones were rover car carriers they seem to be stored all over but last used in 2005 out of Longbridge

Thanks for the info! I used to have a few Rovers back in the 90's/2000's the wagons here were in good condition, although now cut off and isolated, this could be their resting place. Thank you so much for watching and commenting :)

Hi Kernow, yeah railways are not playgrounds as we both know. I remember watching the news report about the two Network Rail workers who were struck by the 800 GWR there.

Great video. I think the enclosed French made interconnected cars in the siding are early Channel Tunnel motor car carriers.

The cars with the accordion between each car may have been a experiment for making the more aerodynamic

Yes thats a good suggestion, they had no restriction between them, no partition internally too, so one long carrige. Thanks for watching and commenting :)

      Hi ALW team
It was gated off but you can get in by going down the bank cross under a stile and it comes at the rear of the gate. There were even more steel wagons as I went down at least another 3 lines of wagons.
