  • www.homebuildingandrepairs.com... Click on this link for more information about structural wall framing, new home construction and building repairs. Here's an example of something home builders and carpenters did years ago, but rarely do anymore. Years ago they installed angled braces that would go underneath the rafter ties to stabilize the walls and prevent them from moving, but now use other engineering methods.

I think most people want it for storage. Put the 2x4's or 6's 16" at least if not double them and plywood the floor. Nailing at least 4 nails every 4'. Tie the plywood into the top plate on the other side of the garage. Well'ah. Tied in tight, and a sturdy floor to put your Christmas lights and bullshit.

Storage, storage, storage, always looking for more places to store our stuff.

Put a flat 2x4 across the rafters and only the one standing up for the last span to the plate, and you can run the top one long over the last one to eliminat
e all those cuts and connectors

Can these be added after the fact to help shore up a gable roofed detached garage?

Here's another video that might be helpful. It was inspired by one of the comments below.

This is funny, my garage has two flimsy 1x6 X braces, I had already planned to do corner braces similar to the illustration.
I already have the center brace beam which I will reinforce.

Sorry UK definitions. The ladder span is just the last two comman rafters that makes up the gable end overhang. Your rafter are normally spaced 16 on centre ours is 400mm. The very last rafter would be on the outside of the building and the one before that would be on the inside of building spaced apart max 600mm. the noggin is just the blocking that connects the last two rafters or any rafters. The blocking for the ladder over here tends to sit in not on the gable end wall. Hope that helps

Thanks for the explanation and it definitely helps.

Is there any studies on if let-in bracing is still effective by modern framing and sheathing materials?

I will do some research and let the viewers know if I find anything.

I have a pyramid hip-roofed free standing garage. There are 2 long cross beams (1x6s I think) that form an "X" if you're looking up at the rafters (there's a puny light fixture attached to the middle). Would this serve the same purpose as what you describe in the video? Would I "substitute" the long beams the same way?

In a way yes, the cross bracing or X braces are helping to prevent the walls from spreading out. It's not a common form of construction, but I have seen it before. I would love to have a picture of that for my archives, but understand perfectly well if it will be too much trouble. You can get our email address at our website.

I have that too mine are lap jointed and bent so is the center beam. I'm going to replace mine with corner braces.

Hi. Am from the UK any chance you could do some videos on roof construction on block and brick work please. I need some help in constructing a roof for my brick shed. How can I attach the gable ladders overhangs to the rafters and ridge board. Not sure how high my gable end walls needs to be as well. And where do the ladder noggins cut in and sit on the brick walls.

I put your video on my list, but don't know when I will be able to make it. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching our videos.

@@gregvancom thank you. UK regulations says rafter ladder span cannot be more than 600mm regardless if ladder noggins sit on the gable end wall just for your reference.

You will need to help me out with your definitions. What is a rafter ladder span and a ladder noggin?

My garage has these but they are sagging. Am I OK to screw them into the rafter ties?
