On March 31, 1943, Rodgers & Hammerstein’s OKLAHOMA! opened on Broadway at the St. James Theatre and transformed the future of theater. The first of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s many collaborations marked the birth of a new genre, the musical play, which for the first time seamlessly integrated story, song and dance. The original Broadway production ran for 2,212 performances and was recognized with a Special Tony Award® in 1993 to honor the original Broadway production.
