The movie "Into the Forest" brought me here. I saw Cat Power around 2007 in Chapel Hill, NC at a place next to Cat's Cradle. I was on a blind date. She hated the "concert." You have to understand, Cat was considered a "freak of nature" then, and maybe now? Even among my most wild ass friends they didn't like her music. She was waaaay too out there. Even I don't know where too out there is. I didn't know anything about her. I watched a few videos before the concert and was intrigued to say the least. The show, it was a magical experience. And I have been to 1000 concerts. None do I remember like that. It was just her, and a violinist, as far as I remember. Maybe the best musical experience I have ever had.

I don’t think I can really explain with words how much this movie sequence and song have been influential to me, how they created an absolute ideal of beauty, professionalism, nostalgia tied together.
I was determined to find the voice singing 'Wild is the Wind' which closed 'The First Monday of May' at the NY Met. China: Through the Looking Glass. If the designers of those magnificent gowns did not create Art then what is Art? Cat Power singing 'Wild is the Wind' was a perfect choice to close the Show. Thanks to the ABC for broadcasting 'The First Monday of May'!

As a current resident of Memphis, I've met Chan. She's so utterly talented and lives in another world, really. But there is no denying her transcendent talent. This version of this great song is neck and neck with Nina Simone's for me. I could die listening to either reading.
