I have to wonder if the person who laughed was amused by your dedication to being out painting in the stormy weather rather than laughing at your painting because your painting was gorgeous and made me feel joy from the inside out! I'm definitely inspired by your work and your diligence!

Most people who laugh at someone’s art could never do it themselves. It shows insecurity, envy, and ignorance. The only opinion that matters is your own. Art is a reflection of personal feeling and interpretation, not what we want someone else to approve of. Thank you for your videos and insight, they are greatly appreciated!

Most of the people who come up to me when I am out painting are envious and very complimentary. Usually I am so involved in what I am doing that I don't even know they are there until they speak. I enjoy interacting with and communicating with onlookers while I paint. I always enjoy your videos.

Michael you really are amazing in both your dedication to your craft and to your viewers - the temptation to turn around at the site of the miserable weather would have driven me to the nearest coffee shop.

Hi Michael, I'm a beginner painter and just started painting a year ago. You inspire me to be consistent in painting and to start doing plein air. I love the finished painting. Especially the contrast between the moody/muted tone with that light effect, and also the solid mountains & rocks with the energy of the sea. Thank you so much for sharing your painting process.

At first I was worried about you painting out there in the foggy weather…since the last time I watched you painting outside you were recovering from losing your voice, etc. I admire and appreciate your perseverance and commitment.
All paintings tend to go through an “ugly” stage…non-artists may not understand that either.
I think you did a good job of making a good painting of such a dreary day. Great use of a mix of grays.
Thank you for continuing to make videos for us.😊

I needed to hear this exhortation on consistency and commitment. And the blessing of the "tests" that come our way.
I don't like them, but I appreciate them because I can see how I have grown in respecting others opinions, but not letting them shake me, or discourage me as much as I used to. It's good to gauge growth, in my case see areas I need to strengthen more.
I have found that when that happens, I consider the source, and realize that although everyone has a right to an opinion, not all are of equal value.
I look forward to your Sunday paintings. Thanks for being a role model, not only in painting, but the practice of growth as a human being, no matter what your gift is.
We have to fight for our gifts. I believe it's a gift from God.
There will always be people that don't understand. That's okay. Because God will always send those who do and they appreciate and value your gift.
Thank -you for fighting through the storms with Grace.
    It's inspiring!

I love your sense of adventure! It is pretty intimidating to go out and paint in that weather, but it's also exciting...probably until you start painting and it's misting all over and then rains! :) I really think you are very brave and so inspiring. I can see the difference in your strokes when painting "smaller" and yet you are very capable of creating a signature MC painting! I really enjoyed this one... and the guy that laughed is clearly clueless where art is concerned, not to mention courteousness. I think you are right, at first I was quite worried of criticism and judgement. It took quite a few outings and paintings to get to the point where you realize you know more about what you are doing than the passerby! lol

I paint watercolor and often work at a scenic location with a sketch book. I almost always get someone who wants to see the sketch and often the sketch is in the early stages and is at the ugly stage since I start with the light values. I will let them see the sketch I am working and then show one of my finished sketches earlier in my book. The worst comment was when I was painting a waterfall I had to hike to and a woman asked what medium I was using. When I told her watercolor, she said, “Isn’t that for grade school kids?” I listed famous artists who did watercolor and showed her some finished sketches. It became an educational moment.

I wouldn't worry about criticism while painting because until it's done, it's not done. I've had the good fortune of people asking if they can buy the painting I'm working on! But being painted in oils, I have to tell them it is not immediately transportable. I'll get their email and send them a pic after it is home and dry. Every time, they buy it. When I paint while traveling, these are my "postcards" that I bring back. They are personal to me. I think for these people it represents the same thing, a lasting memory of where they have been and what they saw. That's kind of what it's all about...the experience. Thanks, Michael, for sharing your experiences with us. It's apparent that they are important to many people!

Wow, I've just discovered your channel. Love your art and your way of breaking down things to the essentials while explaining. For I'm into Urban Sketching, I often paint and draw outside. Some people react with interest, some just pass by, some laugh, some ask me to take a photo of them, completely ignoring the fact that I'm just into painting. In those moments I try to think people are just part of the environment, like twittering birds or like wind or rain or noise from the street.
Happy new year and best wishes from Germany, keep doing the great work you do!
