- The is part 1 of a 2 part series in which I set up a new above ground pond made out of an IBC. In this video I explain how to cut an IBC and clad it using shade cloth. I also site the IBC pond before filling it. I finish by adding the first plants to the new pond as well as some pacific blue eye fish to eat the mosquitoes. Hi all. There is no part 2! I ended up leaving it like this (though with more plants) as it looks fine to me and is only temporary. If you grow plants out over the edge there is no need for a protective frame. I have bigger and better things planned and when that happens this pond will be removed. Thank you for watching :)

I am doing this but don't know where to get the right size shade cloth. The smallest I can find in 1.83m wide and the ibc is only 900mm tall

How did it go with algae growth after a while?
A bit early on but seemed to balance out over time. It’s fine now.

hey there, I thought ponds need filtration? Is this not a concern for you? Why not?
The pond is large enough for the small amount of fish in there. If you had more/larger fish then it becomes important.
I think it* was a mistake to cut the upper lip that started the curve on the inside. That's where a lot of the structural strength comes from.
If I was moving it or stacking things on top then definitely! As it is though they are plenty strong enough for the purpose.
@@PracticalPrimate You have it outside and no matter what, when the sun beats on something all day, it will take a toll on your container. Will it make a GIGANTIC difference? Probably not. But I could see that little trick helping to extend the life by a year or two for sure.

How the hell are frogs gonna get up there 😅😅
Our favourite frogs here are tree frogs ;) they climb. Fortunately the cane toads (major pest here) can’t.

Never did a part 2. In the end plants covered the edges and surface and I liked it like that. I have to do an update to answer this kind of question :) thanks for watching.
