You are right on the money on this one! Tua was his best at around 220 lbs. I wish he had fought mike tyson at that weight. I think tua was mismanaged when they allowed him to basically sit on the shelf for 2 years waiting for a title shot and getting fat. His team should have kept him busy and fighting tall fighters while waiting for a title shot against lennix lewis. We know that lewis had a glass jaw and if tua had his weight down he might have won by knockout. Also i noticed that Hollyfield never fought tua. We know nowdays that hollyfield was on steriods back then.In this day and age he would have been caught and suspended. They did not test for steriods back then.
Yeah, win or loss he could've had some decent money fights. I bet he could've made some scratch fighting Michael Grant or getting an HBO date or two. I think the Holyfield/Lewis draw also screwed it up a little.
Glass jaw? Lewis took bombs from Klitschko, Briggs, Holyfield, Mercer, and ruddock just because he got caught twice in his 15-year career doesn't mean he had a glass jaw
Growing up in south Auckland he was our hero...in hindsight he should have been a world champion if he was managed properly and didn't have kevin barry as his coach

That would have been a great fight, for sure... the 90s gave us lots of great heavyweight bouts, but a few were never made. "It takes more than a left hook and a haircut to beat Lennox"... priceless. Another terrific video.

Great video mate, you definitely did the man’s career justice here. Along with Marciano and Frazier, Tua is my favorite HW ever. One of the best to never win a title in my opinion. And like you Rummy I had Tua beating Ike by a round or two (and I had no favorite in that match up at the time).
Great reporting on a top contender who never was and how boxing is a tough business you need good management and be in the right place at the right time.
He just had slow feet and head movement was not elite but who knows if he were about today he might have ruled. But you are correct timing is everything in life not just the boxing ring. Life is so unpredictable. Brilliant piece of video making here Rummy.
Would've loved to have seen aggressive guys like David and Ray fair against Tyson, they probably would've beat him. He's never faced beasts like those 🔥.
For what it's worth, I had the Tua - Ibeabuchi an even 6 rounds to 6. Though I would have given it to Tua if pressed because I saw him landing the heavier blows throughout.
Nice video. Watching Tua decline was heartbreaking, such unfulfilled promise. I'm not sure a mythical "peak" Tua could ever beat Lewis or Holyfield, but he sure could have given Lewis especially more of a scare. Sadly I see parallels with Joe Parker, another talented kiwi Heavyweight. Great chin, fastest hands in the division, no real boxing skill. Parker actually looked much better recently in the second Chisora fight after Andy Lee got hold of him, but he reverted to type when tiredness set in. There is a common thread with them, a trainer that never got the best out of them.
All these incredible challengers like Ibeabuchi, Rahman, Byrd, and even Tua himself really deserve to be remembered and we talked about more. Thank you Rummy
Saw him at the supermarket just down the road in Auckland, New Zealand a few weeks ago. Really nice guy, he's tiny though. I'd say 5'8'', 5'9'' maximum. Small heavyweight, pretty amazing what he acheived.
Ike would have knocked out tyson cold. Tyson was a force of nature but as many showed he could take a punch and would have always been a candidate to get knocked out against the likes of TRUE HAMMERHANDS like Ike or Tua
Used to love watching tuam.bought his career set...scored some of my favourite ever knockouts against Ruiz maskaev and David izon... 220 pound tua was an utter wrecking ball 250 pound tua was slow goddamn slow it's like he was encased in treacle
I'm always excited to see a new "Rummy's Corner" video! Fantastic work my friend and please don't ever loose the accent! The native people of New Zealand (Maori) are some of the toughest and IMO, most intimidating people on the plane!
Love this video Rummy. I will share a Tua story. When Tua fough Lennox Lewis, I bet 8k on Tua to win. I know that might sound crazy now, but Tua could knock out anyone and I knew Lewis didn't have the greatest chin. Unfortunately, I made that bet a month before that fight and had no idea Tua would come in 20 lbs heavier than his last fight and we ever more immobile. I will never understand why he did that. Finally gets a title shot and comes in out of shape. So that sucked losing the money. And I had to laugh in Lewis' next fight when he got knocked out. I was just off by one fight!
Tua came in heavier in the two preceding fights before Lewis as he knew Lewis was the one he was going to have to fight for the title. He wanted more weight to absorb the power and weight of Lewis. The two other fights were to get used to the weight. Lewis lost to Rahman because he turned up in South Africa far too late and didn't acclimatise to the altitude. It was talked about for near two weeks leading up to the fight and people asking if he'd made a huge mistake in not getting there sooner.
Everyone talks about Tyson vs Tua in the 90s, but Tua vs Holyfield would have been a better style clash I think. I'd still watch the shit out of Tyson vs Tua mind you 😂
Tua was championship material and better than most HWs, unfortunately for him he was fighting in an era that was dominated by a HW legend Lennox Lewis.
a lot of it had to do with him having ongoing issues with his management team too. it had more to do with that but ruiz & rahman were don king fighters & got the higher profile HBO fights
When i was a kid i didn't appreciate the skills of David Tua. I always wanted to fight like Roy Jones jr and Chris Byrd. Eventually i started boxing just like Eddie Chambers, Jason Estrada, Lawrence Clay Bey, Kirk Johnson, Cedric Boswell. NOW when i'm in the ring i take a more David Tua, James Toney, Tim Witherspoon approach to boxing. this came once i sat down and studied how good tua was, i had the opportunity to watch him spar when he was here in south florida
Brilliant review Rummy. I remember Tua but not the reason for his demise. Ike, now I did think he'd beat Lennox but unfortunately he was mentally unstable. I would love to see a review of his career and where it could have gone. Nice work, love your videos (and I watch the ads all the way through to support the channel).
Thanks Rummy. What a resume without a title! You are so right about timing and taking advantage of your time in the sun - to me, this makes the recent performances of Kambosos (against Lopez), Andy Ruiz (in his first fight with Joshua) Leigh Wood, Dmitry Bivol, etc all so impressive. They came out of obscurity and left with titles and a place on history. I would also add that without the weight of a powerful promoter and A side status that so often worthy contenders are denied their rightful victories or their rightful title shots. Most recently, I think that Maxim Vlaslov at 175, Brian Castano at 154 and Matveu Korobov would have all had different futures and much more money in their pocket with A side status or even with impartial judging. It's a shame that talent is not necessarily the only thing that's rewarded in professional boxing, do I appreciate the way you articulated it and for now it's just the way it is.
John Ruiz only got those title shots because of Don King and when he'd lose them, Don would find a way to keep getting him rematches. Just like what he did with Bermain Stiverne. Basically screwed up the heavyweight division in doing so.
Rummy, same sentiment goes for Mike Tyson. Both these fighters were at their prime in lighter weights. Even Andy Ruiz. Tua had a great chin and great power. Tommy Morrison also comes to mind with his size and left hook.
Got to meet Tua back in 2000. I randomly see him and his bodyguards walking around next to my work. There is a common thread with them, a trainer that never got the best out of them.
All these incredible challengers like Ibeabuchi, Rahman, Byrd, and even Tua himself really deserve to be remembered and we talked about more. Thank you Rummy
Ibeabuchi was something really special, it's so bad that he squandered it all away
Rummy is clearly the very best boxing analysis on youtube
Can you make a tale of the tape about ike ibeabuchi thanks.💯👍🔥✔💥🥊
Another great edition to the legacy of boxing media.
Excellent video everything played out exactly the way and for the reasons you described.
Prime Tua was the best combination of power/chin/stamina the division has seen since Marciano.
Saw him at the supermarket just down the road in Auckland, New Zealand a few weeks ago. Really nice guy, he's tiny though. I'd say 5'8'', 5'9'' maximum. Small heavyweight, pretty amazing what he acheived.
Interesting piece Brilliant again Rummy.
2 matches that should have been made- Tua Vs Tyson and Tyson Vs Ibeaubeachi. Wow how great would they have been for all out action. Missed chances.
Ike would have knocked out tyson cold.
Tyson was a force of nature but as many showed he could take a punch and would have always been a candidate to get knocked out against the likes of TRUE HAMMERHANDS like Ike or Tua
I wonder if tua and tyson will come out of retirement and have one last match against each other. I reckon with the right money and backing.
Oh, man. I just cannot wait till I see again how Tua sent Ruiz straight to the graveyard 😂
Used to love watching tuam.bought his career set...scored some of my favourite ever knockouts against Ruiz maskaev and David izon...
220 pound tua was an utter wrecking ball
250 pound tua was slow goddamn slow it's like he was encased in treacle
*Tua.....I bought his career set
You can edit comments FYI.
I'm always excited to see a new "Rummy's Corner" video! Fantastic work my friend and please don't ever loose the accent! The native people of New Zealand (Maori) are some of the toughest and IMO, most intimidating people on the plane!
Yes they are but Tua is Samoan
My fave heavyweight of all time 🔥🔥🥊🥊
Great video as always rummy you made my lunch break a delight today.
Great video, rummy!
Love all your videos I really like this one because Tua was one of my favorite fighters. I certainly do wish that the timing had been right
Love this video Rummy.
I'd still watch the shit out of Tyson vs Tua mind you 😂
There's a great sparring clip of these 2 on YT somewhere
I think Tua would win both by late round KO
With the right money and backing it would still happen
He was fun to watch when at the top of his game. A lot of fun
great video as usual. Tua was a beast
Great video as always
Would've been neat to see this man as champ, should've been added to the Fight Night Games long ago.
Love it Rum, into the time machine!
Nice work, love your videos (and I watch the ads all the way through to support the channel).
i would love to see Tua join the upcoming ESBC video game roster.
He is a Legend🔥⚔️.
It's sad we never get to see Mike Tyson to go against Tua back in the 90's. I have a feeling that Mike wants to have nothing to do with Tua...
I agree tua was terrifying
Prime Tyson would have likely never felt that way. His promotions would have.
Styles make fights.
Tua wouldn’t have been intimidated by Tyson even in his prime. Therefore Tua would win
Mike wasnt interested in fighting at that point....after 6 or 7 hard rounds I think he'd have quit or got himself DQd in there vs Tua
Prime Tyson would beat him, naturally, albeit itd be a very fun fight
Another great video Rummy.
Best in the business you are Rummy 💥
Honestly, I drop a like and a comment before I even start the video, I know ima like it when big boy tua is on the thumbnail and it’s posted by rummy
Great sum up of Tua’s career here.
Great assement. You know your boxing!
Placing Bivol in the same line as Kambosos,Ruiz and whoever Leigh Wood is? That's disrespectful,Bivol's a top level boxer.

One of the Best Heavyweights to never Win a Tittel.
Title
He won titles but just not the main one
John Ruiz only got those title shots because of Don King and when he'd lose them, Don would find a way to keep getting him rematches. Just like what he did with Bermain Stiverne. Basically screwed up the heavyweight division in doing so.
Rummy, same sentiment goes for Mike Tyson. Both these fighters were at their prime in lighter weights.
Even Andy Ruiz.
Tua had a great chin and great power.
Tommy Morrison also comes to mind with his size and left hook.
Great video. I wonder how far Ike could of gone if he weren't his own worst enemy.
Спасибо автору канала ...Отличный выпуск.Туа на пике это мощььь!
Loved David Tua. Would love to have seen him and Tyson fight...
