MissingNo. (け つ ば ん 'Ketsuban'?), Or MissingNO, [1] is a species of Pokémon found in the Pokémon Red and Blue games. The Pokémon MissingNo. ("Missing Number", or "Unknown Number") is used by Game Freak as an exception handler, and appears when the game tries to access information about a species of Pokémon that does not exist. Due to the schedule of three events in the game, players were able to find it through a glitch. The species was first documented by Nintendo in the May 1999 issue of Nintendo Power.
Find MissingNo. triggered graphical glitches and mass replication of the sixth item in the player's item menu; the latter effect resulted in coverage of the glitch by strategy guides and game magazines. IGN commented on the appearance of MissingNo. in Pokémon Red and Blue as one of the most famous video game glitches. Fans of the series tried to include MissingNo. in the canon of the Pokémon universe, which generated debates on the subject.
History
Developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo, the Pokémon series started in Japan in 1996. The player takes on the role of a Pokémon trainer, whose goal is to capture and train creatures known as Pokémon. Players use the special abilities of these creatures to battle other Pokémon; [2] [3] certain abilities open up new ways of navigating the world, such as instant travel between two areas. [4]
Nintendo has documented the events that cause MissingNo to appear. for the first time in the May 1999 issue of Nintendo Power, warning that "any contact with it (...) can easily erase your saved game or corrupt its graphics". The glitch is the result of a succession of events: first, players observe a tutorial in the game that teaches how to capture Pokémon. The player then uses a Pokémon with the "Fly" ability to reach Cinnabar Island, and finally uses a Pokémon with the "Surf" ability to roam the east bank of the island until MissingNo. show up.
An encounter with a Pokémon MissingNo. it is the result of three computational events. The first comes from the game's random encounter system; each area associates values with the Pokémon in a data buffer, accessed by the game so that the player finds wild Pokémon. However, no value is associated with this buffer for the right side of the Cinnabar and Seafoam Islands - instead, information about the previously visited area is used. The second factor is the demonstration of the old man in the tutorial, which temporarily stores the player's name in the data buffer. This causes the game to access the hexadecimal values of the player's name for encounters with Pokémon in the Cinnabar Islands and Seafoam. The third factor is the game's exception handling system: if the game selects a data buffer value that does not match an existing Pokémon, a subroutine is triggered, which causes a Pokémon called MissingNo. show up. MissingNo. is the reduction of "Missing Number". [6] [7]
As with any other Pokémon, the player can face it, capture it, or even flee from it. After meeting with MissingNo., The number of the sixth item in the player's item menu is increased to 128, and the Pokémon Hall of Fame gallery is permanently corrupted. Temporary graphical glitches can also occur, which can be removed by viewing another Pokémon's stats page or by rebooting the console. A MissingNo. captured is a fully functional Pokémon, and appears in the game's Pokémon index at number 000. All MissingNo. have consistent skills, type, statistics and sounds. The Pokémon typically appears in the form of a scrambled "d", but certain random encounter values can make it appear as one of three sprites not used by other Pokémon.
