41: Our First Lock in Years!

  • Apparently, going through locks is a lot like riding bicycles. Once you've got the general idea, you never really forget.
By the time we got to the Troy Federal Lock in Troy, New York, it had been over three years since the last time we had transited a lock and that was in the Nordhavn 40, our first ONWARD.
Troy Lock had a challenging approach with currents from the dam that forced Guy to really work the wheel to keep us on the right track (as you'll see in the video), but the lock itself was quite easy, and it even offered us a choice of either grabbing a fixed pipe or cable. The transit through this lock felt pretty much like the more than 100 transits we made before.
And there's less than three miles to go till we get to Waterford, which is the beginning of the historic Erie Canal. We're excited to see what's ahead as we turn to the west and make our way closer to the Great Lakes and Canada. Every mile we go is brand new to us and every mile brings us closer to crossing our wake.
As always, we thank you for coming along with us on America's Great Loop.
    Guy and Vickie...and Sailor too!

PRODUCTS AND SERVICES WE MENTION, USE, AND RECOMMEND:
    • You'll see a good bit of our use of what boaters often call "marriage savers" while we transit the lock in this video. We highly recommend these headsets for the sake of safety and for reducing the inherent stress of locking, docking, anchoring, and other two-person boating operations.

Very relaxing. Thanks for the lock experience.

The locks are kind of interesting to us and mostly fun. They all operate using similar principles but they can also be quite different from others. We're looking forward to doing the very different Peterborough lock when we transit the Trent-Severn Waterway in Canada.

Sailor has some sort of gadget on her collar. Is that a tracking device?

Sailor sports a training collar* that helps us remind her to listen to us and obey our commands. She's worn one since she was a wee little lass because she still needs reminding from time to time.
      TERRIERS, right? :-)

*We've used two different collars and have had good service from this one, which is a best seller at Amazon: amzn.to/4ihVYPT (#ad)
