One evening, many, many years ago, talking to one guy in a bar about BMWs, another guy says to me, I've got a car outside you might like to see. So we go out in the parking lot, he shows me this car, says it's a TVR with a V8. Asks would I like to go for a quick ride. We get in, we're going downhill, every time he shifts up, the whole front of the car comes off the ground. Decades later, I can still see it in my mind. Incredible.
Super video thanks! I've just this month bought a TVR Chimaera, Its so much fun on mountain pass roads with 240 HP it only weighs 1060kg 2300lbs. No power steering no Trac control no ABS brakes. This means your senses are tuned into what the car is doing. Fantastically rewarding car to drive!
The early TVR Griffith’s were born out of Jack Griffith’s desire to beat Shelby and his Cobra, the small block version, he was a Ford dealer on Long Island in New York State. He had a small block Cobra in his shop and he and his mechanics thought what the heck, they wondered if that motor and tranny would fit in a TVR Grantura. I read a guy who owned a 200 with a Shelbized motor said he felt safer driving a racing motorcycle at Daytona than sitting in his garage with it idling. I had a 1965 200 and I pulled my souped up 302 backed up by a Doug Nash 5-speed out of my Fox body 5.0 GT. It was stupid fast but squirrely as in very twitchy. My wife, my father, my mother even my kids begged me to get rid of it because it was an insane and now looking back in time it was rather dangerous actually. Many of the Series 200s came with a 2bbl 289, a few with 271 hp version and of course many modded them with Shelby Cobra add-ons like 4x2bbl Webers etc....The early Griffiths weighed next to nothing thus giving these 85 inch wheelbase cars incredible power to weight ratios. I still have a huge soft spot in my heart for the Griffith’s especially the Series 200.
I saw an old Griffith 400 race in a classic car race a while back with a bunch of AC cobras and jaguars and that small car really surprised me. Talk about a quick little car
Seen these racing in historic races at brands hatch. One of the most exciting cars too watch. I am biased though as I have a (low powered) more modern TVR myself.
I've always heard these cars didn't handle well. From this video I see that is not the case. I'm sure there are some mods, but I heard mostly the wheelbase made them ill handling. Even when the driver pushed it and things got a little out of control, he was able to bring it back in quite effectively. Great car and great driver!
I think people drive them and get a fright if they are not accustomed to a race car. Even the road cars have race chassis and coil over. When the 4 wheels are not correctly aligned or the tires are hard with age. With a super low center of gravity and weighing in at 2200 lbs balanced 50/50 makes for a swift and stable cornering machine! Also many tvr are running way way to high tire pressure. This takes a lot of traction away. Chimaera owners manual says 22psi front, 24psi rear.
TVR's are notourious for being difficult to handle. They are quite fast though when driven right (based on my internet experience from other people driving TVRs ;p)
Tipp for Filip Larson: modify the steering wheel much nearer to your body. After you have more power in your arms to let the hands at 02:45 o‘clock😊. Regards from a long time racing driver
Great video, as always, Robbert! That TVR could really use with a bigger, rounder steering wheel. Definitely not the best choice for properly handling it in anger.
Es empfiehlt sich, das zufällige und stete Wechseln der Handposition am Lenkrad , um ein Maximum an Verwirrung für das Gehirn zu stiften, in welche Richtung die Vorderräder stehen. Was da an Zeit liegen bleibt...tolles Auto übrigens.
And, yet, 'oversteer' drivers think that a Saab 99-Turbo was a Fist-full to Handle?! Yikes! ;this thing wants to Go SIDEWAYS with just a Hint of 'Gas-On'! Way twitchy as compared with my old Toyota Corolla GTS RWD-Posi from '85, or even my Saab 9-3 Turbo (which had Wicked 'Torque-steer' that the 900/99/97/96/95 Old Saabs did not have)! Watch that Steering wheel. It's directly connected to the right foot's Input!! 'Donut King', with Bald Hoosiers?? Me-thinks so!
wow, a professional race driver driving THAT, but STILL driving with very improper technique, SHUFFLING HANDS on the wheel as such, especially at THOSE speeds and corners smfhhhhh
TVR, a brand too often forgotten, thank you for making us experience this hill climb
He didn't *make* you do anything, soy boy
Great performance but most TVRs are ugly and not well proportioned... Like many british cars... Everything looks shed built...
@@Vico-kfh6 to not offend anyone. PERSONALLY, to me, those cars are ugly and not well proportioned...
When you consider this car is almost 50 years old!!!! Quite amazing.
@@Vico-kfh6 he can call it ugly if he wants, it's okay

These videos never disappoint. Almost makes you feel as if you're in the car
Brilliant, typical TVR. Too much power and not enough of everything else, love it! ❤❤
That's the best description of a TVR I've ever heard......from a proud TVR owner!
The way You capture life in on film is trully astounding.
That's the fastest Cortina tail lights ever moved .
But the Howmet TX might be a little quicker?
Good call. Forgot the Howmet used them too!@@nimaforoughi7266
TVR used to make incredible cars man
Robbert, this is fantastic! Never stop filming. The sense of speed, fight, strugle is real, one can almost feel and smell it. 🔝👌
Thank you Robbert, great job as always!! I love TVRs and don't see much of them online.
Nothing like V8 torque on a damp, cold road! Instant pucker factor.
Looks like a real handful!
Must be a very short wheelbase. Lots of muscle.
The rear angle is best view. Lovely thing

Pure savage!!! What a car! What a driver!
TVR, cool! Very nice mix of onboard, close range and long range. Wow! Thanks!
What a beautiful little car
Surprisingly quiet from the inside.
This man seriously has some of the BEST audio i've ever heard on youtube for cars.
How the hell don't you have at least 500k subs yet?
Considering the potential outcomes of an off, he’s not leaving much on the table. Nice work
Such a cool little car
I saw an old Griffith 400 race in a classic car race a while back with a bunch of AC cobras and jaguars and that small car really surprised me. Talk about a quick little car
what a beautiful video and car! beautifully shot thank you for this!
Tiny car, short wheelbase, hulking great V8, wet mountain pass, max attack...surprised you didn't do it blindfold just for a bit of excitement.😂
we need more !!!!!
that thing is twitchy as hell, i would have died, good driver

Yet again great video! And sound is incredible!
I like the series 1 Cortina tail lights.
An amazing video, thank you so much for bringing us❤
Beautiful ❤
I'd love to see you film some rotary action, always one of my favourite sounds
Absolutely mindblowing video as always! Best discovery of 2023🔥🔥
PS: Do you use a mounted cam for the onboard shots?
these are soo cool.
I would pick this over a GT40.
To mutch to handele for a scary pilot.....
Precious brand with a kind of history. thx
What an experience thanks for sharing!
Only TVR can make something so tiny so masculine and raw haha
What a beautiful car and a great driver 👍
I'm in awe!
What a fabulous beast
Love the TVR Griffith! A lottery cars for sure!
Great video yet again.
This does highlight just how badly TVRs handled!!

B cool to watch it race down the mountain
Great stuff! Looked like the driver was fighting for his life at points lol
He probably was! It's a TVR after all. They try killing you at every opportunity!
Thats a lot of opposite lock! 😂😂
Great video!
Reaction time....fast💪🏻😳
Epic machine!
We often see one of these at Goodwood I think Mike Jordan was driving last time out always gives a good account of itself.A SWB little brute 😆
Good stuff!! I owned a '74 TVR, but it was nothing like this machine. TR6 drive train, but it was a hoot to drive.
Great car, great video... Thanks as always
Will a full version be uploaded?
what a beast ❤
Bravo!
Swb, lightweight, V8 powered slippery bastard
I miss that company
thank you😊
Griffiths were sold into US market only
As Jack Griffith ordered the bodies and had Ford 289s installed. They were left hand drive cars only.
Thats a handful
Great car !
Dam I wish I was Swiss.
Tipp for Filip Larson: modify the steering wheel much nearer to your body. After you have more power in your arms to let the hands at 02:45 o‘clock😊. Regards from a long time racing driver
despite he's having no issues controlling the car using the straight arm technique.

DAMN! Yes this was the unexpected Hillclimb as the Police closed the road on my Motocycle Tour thru the Alps, funny to see this now 😂
The video is amazing as always, the driver though, well, not so much.
V8 beast is a handful in the wet - it needs a 4x4 drivetrain
289 ford👍👍
yes please

0.39 amazing just drive it hard.
Ein TVR Griffith 400 von 1968 ist eine so gut wie unfahrbare Knallcharge !
I have that same omp steering wheel for my 91 civic si😂
Beautiful! But I think that car is trying to kill the driver.
As much as I enjoy those Avons on my E-Type , no thanks in cold wet conditions.
dem cortina lenses tho
Looks so odd with those Consul taillights.
Rover V8?
Small block Ford V8. The Rover engine was used in later generations.
@@grahambell4298 it sounds good 👍
GRİFFFİİİİİİTTTTTTTHH
The radical steering inputs tell me this was too much power for this driver.
Parece un karting.
Driving it like a child
01:43 - when a part of it fell off. Sadly, that's about right for a TVR.
LANCIA
What! Not even close to a Lancia. Lancia's are lithe Italian beauties, this is a British brute!

Here's an idea: Why don't YOU do better. Go on. Show us your driving skills. We are all waiting.
How about a hill climb event where you actually have to stick to your lane and your car has to be road legal? Mimicking real life.
horrendous car control. sorry.
Horrendous car to control!
