    I posted this on someone else’s channel but reposted here.
    I use Leica because in 1970, when I was just a youngster, I was on a family holiday and we were in London for the day. My father took us into a photography exhibition about the Vietnam War and Larry Burrows was there. I met him and saw that he used Leica and that’s what I wanted to use. He was killed months later in a helicopter crash.
    It was only in later life that I could afford to buy the gear and have slowly built up a collection of 4 lenses. I now use an M10 and an M7 after having used an M4-2 for many years.

    I’ve gone back to film after owning an M6 (2006) -> M240 (2014) -> M10 -> MP (2023). I really missed film! I’m thoroughly enjoying thinking about the composition and taking my time to capture the moment, then moving on and not sitting there with my head tilted to the ground and flipping through menus and photos on a tiny digital screen.

    I like your comment about "a little bit of movement." I always say that the aim of photography is not to freeze motion, but to reveal it.
    As far as cost goes, Leicas are expensive but not unaffordable. It's about priorities. And, if I may say so, I like the Cosina Voigtlander lenses. A good compromise between price and performance.

    I agree with everything you are saying. My forever camera is a classic set of 3 Canon VT DELUXE rangefinders (2 chrome, 1 black) each fitted with a Voightlander 21mm f4 Color Skopar LTM with LH1 lenshood. I love them intensely. I've been shooting for 50 years and this trio of identical cameras are my companions. Three cameras, three bags, three kinds of film. My set up.

    I really lucked out, found a used M3 from a local person, there were some issues with it so I took a chance bought it dirt cheap got a CLA and it works perfectly..I knew I wanted an M3 due to the 50 mm frame lines and big patch. I shoot 50 and 90 lenses mostly.I agree with you on the Leica lenses, they render very nicely ,I got a used summarit and an older elmarit both at very reasonable price. The quality of these lenses is excellent despite being on the lower end of their lineup. I enjoy going out with this kit, I intersperse it with a number of other setups I use. The way you approach photography with this setup does give you a different experience, that is just enjoyable in some ephemerable way. I’ve stopped trying to understand why I just appreciate it. Thanks for your video.

    Tbh as a MP user I think a Nikon FM shoots the same. So is all the full mechanical cameras from the old days, surely some are designed slightly "better".
    I mean, if FM costs more than the MP, I will be equally as proud shooting it.

    • @anta40
      @anta40 3 года назад

      Well, I'd say FM3A is one of the most advanced manual focus 35mm SLRs ever made. And of course being an SLR means you can use any zoom & telephoto lens. While on RF you are practically limited to shorter primes. Depends on your shooting style/preference, I guess.

    • @doubleletter

      Some of my best photos are with the Nikon F2 - it's not just about the camera but forming a 'relationship' or 'understanding' with it - and that comes from consistent use as Matt suggests.

    I think that you are correct in general that the glass is more important than the body. However, the rangefinder experience is so unique that there are still tangible, real advantages to investing in a Leica body and using affordable Voigtlander lenses.

  • @mornnb

    One of the best things about the M system is how well it sits between both digital and analogue. And that these same attributes apply to the digital bodies. Ie, M11, pack in the best sensor anyone makes with simple manual dials to control shutter and ISO and great lenses. A perfect mix of quality and simplicity without fluff.

    Hi Matt! I really enjoyed your video, your thoughts spoke to me! One question - how do you scan your negatives? This is what keeps me away, I am struggling with the logical twist of shooting analogue, but then scanning digitally and editing in Lightroom. I used to shoot back in the 80s on slide film (Velvia 50), back then after development I simply used my Leica Podovit slide film projector to review my shots. No digital step was involved. But nowadays if I want to shoot negative, I must use a crappy scanner, remove the dust, sit in front of my computer, etc. Can you share how do you feel about it? Also, would you please mind sharing what scanner do you use? Thank you again, and please continue to share your thoughts via RUclips!

    Just watched this again for the passion. 👍
    Also, the point about 'glass first' is bang on, even if resulting in even greater expense!! (No such thing as a free lunch, of course.) If people are planning on shooting (analogue) Leica, the body choice(s) should be about framelines/vf mag - little else really matters that much beyond personal preference/aesthetics.

    How would you compare the summarit to the 50 cron. I get the summarit is perfectly sized but the cron is not much bigger? I love the 50 cron. Am I missing something. Loved to hear your review of your lens choice?

    • @mattbentley-walls3106
      @mattbentley-walls3106  7 месяцев назад

      Hi Daniel, no I don't think you're missing a trick. The Cron is amazing in my opinion. Mine was stolen so I opted for the Summarit simply because I couldn't afford to buy another Cron. I love the form factor of the Summarit (being smaller and more compact and better weighted, less front heavy) over the Cron and the quality optically is every bit as good as far as I can make out. I am talking about the old Summarit and not the new. When I purchased the Summarit the focus ring was a little on the loose side so I had it serviced and it came back buttery smooth and every bit as perfect as the Cron so I haven't looked back really. This said, if I hadn't had my Cron stolen I'd still be perfectly content and happy with it. You have every right to love the Cron, it's a beautiful lens. Hope this helps and thanks for your kind words.

    Leica nails the most important criterias for creating a photograph
    1) simplicity (doesn’t get in the way)
    2) reliability
    3) durability
    4) best optics
    5) compactness (which is what the 35mm was invented for…)
    Shooting with a M is like playing a les Paul straight through a plexi. Nothing in the way :) (vs insane pedal boards)

    What you said are all true! Simple cameta & nothing distracting. Just one thing though.. I’ve been using N6 for several years now & after awhile I realized that I focus way too much time getting the exposure perfectly right. Even exposure arrows has become a distraction for me. Therefore, I’m leaning towards buying M-A these days. Whats your thoughts on this?

    • @mattbentley-walls3106
      @mattbentley-walls3106  2 года назад

      Hi Francisco, well firstly I'm not in the business of recommendations and secondly I haven't ever used the M-A. It very much sounds as though you've answered your own question though and have one foot in the door of your local Leica dealer. Let me ask you - how will you meter. You say you like to meter very accurately. How will you go from this to not metering at all. Im guessing you either use a hand held meter or the Sunny 16 rule which are all fine but still 'distract' you from the actual image. How often do you shoot? I am leaning towards the idea that perhaps you want to rethink or learn that metering is important and that the meter in your M6 does light up with dots and arrows but this should really only be seen as an approximation and not the be all and end all. Is it Street that you shoot? If so, this discipline is normally very good at training the brain to look for the absurd, the beauty etc and via you away from being overly technical. It's incredibly difficult to say one thing or another with more info. That said, the MP which I use is essentially an M-A but with a meter and I can say I personally love this camera. It is my absolute favourite camera of all without question. The M-A and MP are the very best Leica analogue cameras ever made. Simple. Hope this helps and happy shooting!

      It's almost impossible to advice. You mention two very different cameras. I can say I have owned the 1st Monochrom in the past and had immense fun with it - I can't vouch for the more recent models. What is it that makes you gravitate to the Monochrom and which model are you thinking about? Fujifilm are amazing cameras but like you say, I just can't get on with them - too fussy and gimmicky for my liking.

    • @Liamofloin
      @Liamofloin 3 года назад

      @@mattbentley-walls3106 Thanks for the reply Matt. I'm gravitating towards the Type 246. Not that I want video but it's a bit newer, digital does age & there was problems with the M9 Monochrom's sensor I believe & they are no longer replacing the sensors. The reason for monochrome is it restricts me, less concerned then with working with colour also. It's good to concentrate on one type of image B&W less distractions. I have a Voigtlander Nokton Classic, 40mm, f1.4. Multicoat.

      @@Liamofloin No worries Liam. It's a pleasure. I understand completely. I'd shoot colour thinking I have the option to keep it colour if I prefer but in fact I haven't a single colour shot in my folio so why delude myself. Who was I kidding?! Also, according to Ken Rockwell, if you desaturate colour images you lose half the image resolution. You're exactly right with the faulty sensors - that's why I sold mine. It scared the cxxx out of me even if the image quality and dynamic range was sumptuous. As for the 246, I really can't say because I've never use one. I leap-frogged it because I never liked the video thing or the heft/thickness. If money were no object I'd love to have the M10 Mono. I have the M10 colour 24mp and its a dream in terms of a digital camera, literally. I will never purchase another digital camera not only because I generally shoot film but because this camera is everything I want and need. I did a vlog about it on my channel. The only reason I would trade it in would be for the Mono. Alas another pipe dream. Not sure if this will help or confuse you?
