PAPER: Size- 5"x7"
Arches 140lb Hot Press Paper for this Video.
My papers of choice include Arches 140lb Hot press and Cold press paper and Strathmore 500 series Sketchbooks. All are 100% cotton rag.
For beginners, I recommend starting with a high quality paper and experimenting with different types. As your style develops, you'll get a feel for which type is best. Waiting to switch to a better quality paper later will be much like learning to paint all over again.
PEN: A Pigma Micron pen, 005 nib.
MY PALETTE: All tube paints!
Winsor Newton- Yellow Ochre, Sepia, Burnt Sienna, Winsor Red, Davy's Gray, Ultramarine, Sap Green.
DaVinci - Phthalo Blue, Quinachridone Fuchsia, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Deep.
A note on Davy's Gray: I rarely use this pigment straight and when using it I usually mix it with each colour used.
PAINT PALETTE::
The palette is the mixing tray from a "Koi" Watercolour travel set. The colours are set up so the ones I mix together most often are close together.
The paints are squeezed onto slips of paper and then stuck to the palette.
This makes replacing or changing colours quick and easy.
A Polar Flo 1/2 inch flat brush is my current favorite. The bristle were originally white but have become stained.
I often use inexpensive brushes because several of my techniques are quite abusive.
Whenever the brush disappears from the screen it is either being wiped off or rinsed.
REFERENCE IDEA: Came from my imagination/memory.
A favorite of your paintings. The pops of red make me happy!
Your painting was very inspiring. You make it seem all so possible for me to give this a try. As I'm a lefty and just a beginner, it's captivating to sit and enjoy the beautiful music as you create this beauty before me. Thank you for showing the color choices you are using - it's so helpful. You're quite thoughtful, Mr. Steeler and I'm grateful for that.
This is one of my videos on RUclips Peter. I love it 👌🎨
I love the way you added the merest touch of quinachridone fuchsia to the lighthouse. I was so surprised and actually said “ ooh” out loud! I thought why on earth did he do that? But then suddenly, the magic happened and it added a gorgeous hint of warm light and roundness. I’m going to have a go at this. Thank you so much.
Love how you painted the reflected light from the sky onto the lighthouse 💕
Never tire of watching you create Peter.
Thank you very much. That's nice to hear :)
I just love this video. It was lovely to see you work and see how you mixed your colours. Very relaxing. I notice one lady enjoyed watching it with her morning coffee. I enjoyed watching it with my evening glass of wine.😇
LOL. Thank you very much :)
Perhaps the best pen and wash artist I have seen on RUclips. I love your use of a limited palette for these studies.
Very kind words. Greatly appreciated. Peter :)
Hello Mr. Sheeler,
There is magic in the wriggly line you produce. It comes out as a perfect indication of reality.
I like the simplicity of the content. It is definitely vision-friendly.
The colors today are special. Using the Quinacridone Fuschia twisted time in the sky. The blending of colors is nicely done. I liked the result of adding Sepia to the Ultramarine Blue. Last but not least, painting the dome and the door of the lighthouse with bright Red illuminated the whole piece, and took it to another level.
You always dazzle me with your little touches that change everything!
Best Regards,
Thoughtful comments. Thank you :)

I really appreciate the real-time demo, the excellent choice of music, the gear description, and of course, your generosity in sharing your wonderful talent. Always inspiring. Good Morning Peter, thank you for yet again another wonderful lighthouse. I use your videos as "lessons" and they're really great to follow. I really enjoy your drawing style as well. I've learned from all your lighthouse paintings as well as your rusty door! That one was surpringly rewarding. Very much out of my depth but I am learning :) I'm wondering if you might have some advice in mixing a color similar to the sepia you use? I have almost all your other colors but not this one and it's been very tricky trying to wing it. Thank you in advance! Looking forward to the next lesson!
Thank you very much. I've never tried to mix it. You could try black and red :)
A great and a unique work.
Thank you for another wonderful video. I can't wait to try creating this scene, it will be very helpful as practice since I want to do some ink and watercolor sketches of Pigeon Point Lighthouse.

My teacher telling me to watch this and I got to say it’s cool my teachers an art teacher
Hi Peter. Am totally awed by your talent. But where do you get your ideas for your lovely paintings? Are they from photographs, or from your imagination?
Thank you Donna. Ideas come from my imagination/memory, my own photos or by painting on location. If I use a reference photo it will be included in the video. This one was from imagination.
Love your work Peter. Splashed out recently on Arches cold pressed paper, quite rough when one is not used to it. Can I ask you if you you only use sap green from the tube, do you mainly mix your own greens? I'm thinking of buying W&D veridian green or hookers, or both. Thanks a million for the tutorials.
Thank you John. I do use veridian as well. You'll try many before picking your favourites
i'm a photographer too and have a calibrated monitor. Nicely done on your old phone ! everything is good !
i love love your technique. but how how do put the colors on the palette ? and wich koi set do u use ?
