I feel like this interview showcases well one of the biggest problems with the project, in that it highlights the disconnect between the designer decisions and what fans actually want. It's almost like the choices were made behind the scenes without first caring to inquire to what it is that fans really wanted out of a revival. People who were fans of Heroscape want to relive the feelings they had with the original and the more things you change the less likely they are to be on board. If the game doesn't "feel like Heroscape" then what's the point? Heroscape's eclectic nature was one of the selling points of the game. Plenty of players WANT to see more historical figures and pop culture knock-offs because it's fun to see how your dinosaur would fare in a fight versus my robot or your soldiers against my medieval knights, etc. At the same time, those players who preferred a fantasy or sci-fi or other niche could simply pick and choose to play with just those units. So in that way it was a game for everyone. There's a reason the original game focused on pop culture. Because those characters are based on things we can easily recognize and connect with. The new game achieves its goal of having unique factions, but the side effect of these random characters is that we no longer have something we can easily recognize and connect with. So the new units and concepts all blend together instead of standing out to us as recognizable heroes and villains would. Add to that the fact that the units are unpainted and they really DO blend together even more. I understand from a logistical perspective they might not have had a choice. But it certainly didn't help sell the vision.
This interview bit, Heroscape's motto of Battle of ALL Time, and Dad Scaper's Pride and Prejudice quote are hitting home in trying to help Heroscapers understand this IP is meant to be a massive mix, but it also has to be unique to the brand itself. I can get behind that, and I love the aesthetics behind Noxdorma and Arboreas
I think the new units are amazing. it’s sick they come together as a faction rather then starting with one or two figures in the faction then collecting the rest over time in expansions. I’m sure (if it succeeds) they will release more member of each faction in expansion as well anyways. So best of both worlds
I understand the idea of building a new IP, and I am not against new factions. What they came up with, especially the clockwork combine (because I thought they are the worst), was just disappointing, the whole reason I play the game is because it feels like a combination of all my favorite things. I have my historical game, my fantasy game, my sci-fi game and others all in one. (Besides, did anyone notice that in the intro of the video the creator in naming the new factions called one the "Zerg". So much for new IP.
Clockwork Combine and Ironclad pushed me right out of backing this. Oh, that and attempting to charge me $250 for a bunch of factions I DON'T want and a bunch of terrain I already have. Nice try.
@@tabletopbro That's cool if you like the Clockwork, we all have our preferences. I just don't like them personally. Sorry if that came off wrong. I just found it interesting that in trying to come up with a new IP, which is almost impossible, for that vary reason. Even you identified it with an already known similar IP. I like the idea of bringing a bunch of similar to already known IPs to the table. I like the bugs.
@@tabletopbro Well, I was at work and technically wasn't supposed to be on my phone at all, much less searching for the latest Heroscape videos on RUclips. great job scoring these interviews... very insightful. I had not seen all of these until now. as one of the people who would have wanted the campaign to succeed even though I didn't grow up playing HeroScape, it helps me understand what they were up against
What I thought was a masterful move was going from just animal people been done to cyborg animals ..nope been done ...um ooo Steampunk animals, there is something close already OK Fine Cyborg Steampunk Animals !!! Original IP are HARD to come up with. As for the Zerg comment, NEMESIS WAR BROOD is a bug race yes but they are no Zerg or Tyranids I see completely different tactics here and as a Bug Fan Heroscape should have it's own bugs ( Bug Lovers Unite don't hate or I will Challenge you with my Xenomorph army LOL ) .
Dryan Lifeborne best faction. Can't possibly top Onshu. And I will always be on the board of unique designs being better than "discount" designs of popular media. I love that Heroscape is trying to become more its own thing.
These guys dont know what scapers want and thats a big reason their reboot is not working. The guy on the left never even played the game until a couple weeks ago.
Yeah, it's obvious this was made without much, if any, input from long time fans--a bunch of guys and gals in their 30s and 40s ready to spend money if Heroscape really was "Baaack!" It wasn't and we dropped it like a bag of rocks.
The old characters are more protectable than generic unpainted figures. You can just develop the stories that were made. They weren’t as derivative of generic crap as these new factions
he didnt really explain WHY thou....so this video wasnt very good.. i love Heroscape. but having a change like this is just awful in my opinion and the characters are still not painted!!! if i should pay $250-$275 the characters should be painted aswell. none of that trash ass color coating stupid crap. thats just being lazy!!!
I mean, he kinda did. You can’t really build a brand or franchise off cheap pop culture knock offs. Painting units is extraordinarily expensive. 71 figures PLUS painted terrain PLUS the walls and trees for $250 is a steal
@@tabletopbro Yeah he explained it, it just wasn’t a good explanation. He decided not to go with historical figures because he wanted build a brand. If it’s not what a lot of people wanted, and not what it was before, just make what people wanted.
@@darrellgracy2883 If you think this is bad try getting into any other tabletops in existence such as Warhammer. Seldom will you ever find miniatures that are pre-painted, and if they are, they're of incredibly low quality. Your standards are way too high. Plus if you think $250 was bad for a starter pack, just look at the price tags of the Warhammer community and that will give you an idea of the outrageous expense it is for anyone to engage within the tabletop war gaming community.
@@Forgemaster-ob8yz Your standards are too low. You forgot this is Hasbro, much larger than Games Workshop. And how can it be too high, they already did it one before, that set the standard for rest of this game. Also price was never an issue for me.

Definitely worth figuring out the historical units. That's...a big part of it.
I'd like to think if it funds they'll come but alas....
